Employee Health And Safety: A Global Perspective
BANKS Industries is currently operating in both the United States and China. As a US-based company, BANKS is accustomed to conforming to US law regarding employee health and safety. However, Chinese law is different and, in many cases, offers looser standards for employee protection.
Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, respond to the following:

  • From a global perspective, should the company operate under the laws that are provided in each country of operation or should it adhere to the higher standard regardless of where it operates? Justify your answer.
  • Is this a legal issue, an ethical issue, or both? Justify your answer.
  • Cite at least one example of differences in health or safety standards that BANKS should consider as it moves forward. Explain why this standard should be considered.

Assessment Instructions

Note: Assessment 1, Current Environmental Analysis, must be completed before beginning this assessment. You will be revisiting and revising strategies throughout each of the assessments in this course. Each assessment builds on your previous work.

Step One: Critical Thinking Skills Practice

The TOWS Matrix is a decision-making process for developing strategic alternatives. Your ability to think critically is key to organizing your thoughts throughout the strategic planning process.

In preparation for this assessment, you are required to view the Riverbend City: Ruby Lake Evacuation Mission simulation (linked in the Resources). This activity is an ideal setting to practice thoughtful application of critical thinking skills. This media piece addresses multiple competencies, some of which are difficult to practice and assess without a real world or a simulated setting. As you begin your TOWS matrix, keep the following categories of critical thought in mind as you consider the threats, opportunities, strengths, and weaknesses of the Ruby Lake Evacuation scenario.

•Assumptions: What assumptions are being taking for granted by the people in this simulation? What alternative assumptions could be useful in this situation?

•Information: What information did people have and what kind of information were they missing?

•Fairness: How was intellectual and intercultural fairness demonstrated?

•Criteria for Evaluation: What criteria would you use to evaluate the quality of the information, implementation and/or effectiveness?

Complete a practice TOWS Matrix for this scenario before proceeding to Step Two. This practice matrix does not need to be submitted.

Step Two: Complete a TOWS Matrix

Apply the same critical thought process to a real world setting that is relevant for your selected health care organization’s future success. In addition to completing a TOWS matrix, you may use any other appropriate analysis tools to determine alternative strategies.

Include the following as you develop alternative strategies:

•Incorporate the use of new methodologies from the knowledge-economy management approach that might be appropriate for this organization.

•Correlate recent research findings regarding strategy management into your approach.

•Synthesize operational and financial components in your strategic planning process.

•Incorporate your findings from your current environment analysis.

•Determine the organizational structure that best facilitates the strategy—functional, divisional, or matrix.

Step Three: Draft Strategic Plan

Re-examine your work from Assessment 1 and create a high level draft of a strategic plan that incorporates insights from your environmental analysis and the TOWS matrix exercise. The goal is to focus upon application of the concepts and new insight. Keep it brief and substantive.

Preface your draft with the core assumptions regarding environmental opportunities and threats, organizational strengths and weaknesses, and organizational behavior dynamics that are foundational to the strategy.

Include a brief description of the proposed strategy that reflects the choices made regarding:

•Service/product domain.

•Market domain.

•Level of investment in the respective service/product and market domains.

•Positioning approach for achieving competitive advantage.

•Maneuvers that will be used to implement the positioning approach.

•Distinctive competencies or assets that will be relied on to gain and sustain competitive advantage.

Additional Requirements

Submit your selected health organization’s TOWS Matrix from Step Two, with the high-level components of a strategic plan, as an attachment to this assessment.

•Length: 3–5 double-spaced, typed pages. Note: Feel free to construct images/diagrams to summarize information where appropriate (for example, TOWS matrix…).

•APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and formatting.

•Resources: Use evidence from the literature to support your recommendations.

Social Determinants of Health: The Obesity Epidemic

This exercise provides a useful framework to discuss how health outcomes are a product of social determinants.
Directions:

  1. Draw a bare tree with roots, a trunk, and branches.
  2. Think about the disease If you are not aware of the disease obesity do a bit of research on this disease. Write obesity and its definition on the trunk of the tree
  3. List behaviors that contribute to people getting this disease. List these behaviors on the branches of tree.
  4. Next research what happens to people who are obese. What other diseases to obese people get.  These are called outcomes of the disease. They should be placed as leaves on the tree
  5. Finally, list social, economic, and political determinants that influence why people become obese. List these determinants at the roots of the tree. These determinants represent the “root causes of disease.”
  6. Watch https://pc.tedcdn.com/talk/podcast/2010/None/JamieOliver_2010-480p.mp4

Econ 2367: Short Essay

Econ 2367: Short Essay 1 Due September 24, 2017
There are two prompts for you to choose from below, based on topics we have covered in class. You can choose either prompt but you cannot choose the stance you take. Indicate which prompt you have chosen in this Google form (https://goo.gl/forms/4L6wEsHqAO2K5h1p1). Complete the form by Friday, September 15, 12 p.m. and don’t forget to enter your name!
After everyone has chosen their prompt, I will randomly assign the stance you are to take on the issue. You are to make the strongest argument possible for the stance you have been assigned, regardless of your personal opinion. Your essay should be between 1-2 pages in length. See the syllabus for details about formatting.
Please refer to the writing rubric on Carmen to understand the expectations for what makes a good essay. While you should certainly draw on the class material, I encourage you to look for material beyond what we discussed in our lectures. The list of sources and the unassigned readings on our reading list are good places to start.
I am happy to answer questions about the essay prompt or material from the course that you need to understand in order to write your essay. I will not act as your editor or reviewer.
You are encouraged to discuss your essay with your classmates, but your submitted work must be your own.
Finally, you may find it helpful to review our lecture on writing. Start early and edit often. Good luck!
Minimum Wage
Imagine that one year after Seattle completed its minimum wage increase to $15/hour, researchers find employment and hours worked did not decrease, and wages increased. This implies that all cities should raise their minimum wage to the same level as Seattle’s, after adjusting for differences in cost of living across cities*. Agree or disagree with this statement.
Tips: In making your argument, you should make use of our discussion of the different labor market models and what they imply about the effects of the minimum wage. The assigned reading by John Schmitt is a good reference to start with.
*For example, if the cost of living in NYC is twice that of Seattle’s, then NYC would raise its minimum wage to $30/hour in this scenario. A similar logic applies if a city’s cost of living is lower than Seattle’s.
Immigration and agglomeration
There can be substantial economic benefits to having people and firms clustered together, also known as agglomeration economies. One way that the United States can increase its population quickly is by opening its borders. The existence of agglomeration economies implies that the United States should open its borders completely (barring criminals, terrorists, and those with serious communicable diseases). Agree or disagree with this statement.
Tip: In your essay, consider how different forms of labor (e.g. high-skilled, low-skilled, immigrants, natives) interact with each other, even within the same “type” of labor (e.g. high-skilled and high-skilled). For example, are they substitutes or complements?
Consider also where immigrants would migrate to in the United States. Is that something that can be influenced by policy?
You may also want to consider the policy’s effects not just on the United States, but the world economy.

  • Immigration and agglomeration
