Pros and cons of interviews, questionnaires, and observations as methods of job analysis
Job analysis is generally the first step in recruiting and selection, job evaluation, and performance management. Over the years, several different methods have been developed and evolved into those commonly used today. These methods include interviews, questionnaires, and observations, with many variations within each type.
Give your opinion on the pros and cons of each of the three major types of job analysis.
Discuss the situations in which each might be preferable. Consider the purposes for which organizations use job analysis and the potential benefits in using them and the consequences if they don’t use job analysis.

Few companies these days are as controversial for their business practices as Uber. However, in spite of the negative publicity they are a very widely used and growing service company that is replacing taxi cabs and even leading some people to give up their own car in favor of using Uber to get to work. The number of drivers also keeps growing.
There are too many controversies regarding Uber to keep track of, so we will focus just on three that we will examine from a utilitarian perspective. Below are three issues to look into for the assignment, and a few articles to get you started on your research:
- Uber uses money from investors to keep its prices very low. They lose money on many rides, but they are willing to lose money to put the competition out of business:
Wolsen, M. (2014, July 8). Uber’s brilliant strategy to make it too big to ban. Wired. Retrieved from: https://www.wired.com/2014/07/ubers-brilliant-strategy-to-make-itself-too-big-to-ban/ - Uber classifies their drivers as contractors rather than employees, which keeps labor costs down:
Frazier, R. (2016, October 14). Sharing is caring: Are Uber, Lyft drivers independent contractors? HR Hero Line. Retrieved from: http://www.hrhero.com/hl/articles/2016/10/14/sharing-is-caring-are-uber-lyft-drivers-independent-contractors-2/ - Uber has allegedly used technology to evade the authorities and regulations:
Isaac, M. (2017, March 3). How Uber deceives the authorities worldwide. New York Times. Retrieved from: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/03/technology/uber-greyball-program-evade-authorities.html
For this assignment, you will be examining these practices of Uber through the lens of utilitarian ethics. You will need to put aside any personal feelings in favor or against Uber and instead take the cold and logical approach of weighing the good caused by their practices vs. the harm caused by their actions for each of the three issues above.
Case Assignment
Once you have finished reviewing the required background readings on utilitarian ethics and corporate social responsibility and had a chance to research the three issues on Uber mentioned above, write a 4- to 5-page paper addressing the following:
- Who are Uber’s main stakeholders? Your answer should be based both on your research on Uber and the discussion in Brusseau (2012) about stakeholders.
- Which stakeholders are harmed and which stakeholders benefit from Uber’s strategy of using investor money to keep prices artificially low? Does the good outweigh the bad, or vice versa? Apply the Utility Test: http://ethicsops.com/UtilityTest.php
- Which stakeholders are harmed and what stakeholders benefit from Uber’s policy of classifying drivers as contractors rather than employees? Apply the Utility Test and explain whether the good outweighs the harm or not.
- Finally, discuss which shareholders are harmed and which stakeholders are helped by Uber’s use of advanced software to evade authorities? Again use the Utility Test and explain whether the good outweighs the harm or not.
Assignment Expectations
- Follow the guidelines in The Student Guide to Writing a High Quality Academic Paper.
- Don’t forget to properly cite your sources—both in-text and as end references!
- You are expected to demonstrate evidence of critical thinking—as defined in the background materials and the grading rubric. Don’t just summarize information. Instead demonstrate your ability to come to a conclusion and support your conclusion using logical arguments.

Quotation
According to The Center for Public Education (2007), “Whether it’s reported as a number or a letter grade, it tells us basically the same thing—how well students have learned certain subject matter or skills at one point in time. However, a score does not typically tell us how far students grew academically to produce that number or grade.”

Leadership Principles for Health Care Organizations
Assignment
In 2006, researchers published results of a program designed to prevent specific types of hospital infections in intensive care units. The program involved a simple, five-step checklist to remind physicians that before implementing specific procedures, such as inserting central lines into patients, they should carry out routine precautions (for example, washing their hands and wearing a sterile gown and gloves). After 3 months of using the checklist, the rate of bloodstream infections from the central lines was decreased by two thirds. Researchers estimated that in the 18-month period following implementation of the checklist, the program saved more than 1,500 lives and nearly $200,000,000 (Gawande, 2007).
In spite of these amazing results, the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) in Michigan—where the checklist program had been implemented—halted the program. Further, the research hospital was required to discontinue its plans to extend the program to hospitals in New Jersey and Rhode Island. Why was this decision made? The OHRP ruled that federal monitoring and written informed consent from patients should be required for the study in the same way that these would be required for the research (Gawande, 2007).
- Respond to the following question:
- Does the quality improvement in health care outweigh the rights of the patients who did not give their consent to be part of the research?
- Locate 3 different peer-reviewed articles on ethical treatment of subjects in clinical research, and post 1 of the articles as an attachment.
- State whether you agree or disagree with the Michigan Office for Human Research Protections’ response that the quality improvement checklist initiative was questionable and even dangerous.

The European Relationships With Non-European ( Global HISTORY)

Your responses must be typed, no more than 8 pages in length (total) and draw on Bulliet et al., lecture material, and primary source readings. Please follow the format guidelines in the syllabus. The most effective response papers will go beyond repeating the readings (or lectures) and offer creative new interpretations of the evidence presented in class. You are expected to draw primarily on material from Part III: Empire, though I encourage you to incorporate any material from previous sections as well.
Tips: Be clear, make an argument, use examples to support it, cite your quotes, use topic sentences, and proofread.
Submission – Electronic copies of your response papers must be submitted by the due date/time (see above) to BlueLine and a paper copy must be brought to class.
1. European relationships with non-European peoples took on new forms during the nineteenth century. The changing dynamics of colonialism have been termed a “New Imperialism.” What in your view were some of the defining characteristics that separated nineteenth-century European colonization from the colonization that came earlier (1492-1800)? Describe previous relationships, how they changed, and what accounted for that change.
2. Despite their technological and economic advantages, Europeans were not universally successful in their ambitions to conquer new territories. Describe and explain the significance of at least three conditions that limited European power, and how Europeans responded to those limitations. *Hint* think broadly about limitations – they might be political, cultural, economic, or environmental.
