The short papers require you to fully investigate the topic and then prepare and compose a structured essay on the topic. You will use information from the course textbook, but go beyond it in your research. You will research peer reviewed journals available in the Excelsior College Library and will cite 3-4 sources other than the textbook.
Employees represented by a union are paid approximately 40% more (in terms of pay and benefit costs) compared to employees not represented by a union. From the organization’s point of view, unionization and higher labor costs may lead to lower investment in research and development or higher prices of products and services. Research compensation for unionized and non-unionized employees and write a 4–6 page paper in the format described below.
In your paper, address the following:
Describe the role of benefits in employee compensation, along with a general review of the typical components of an employee benefit package.
Analyze and explain how an organization whose employees are represented by a union can remain competitive against an organization whose employees are not represented by a union.
Format
Each short paper must be in APA (6th ed.) format, 12-point font, and double-spaced. The paper should follow this format:
Title page—short description of the subject of the paper
Abstract—a concise executive summary of 50 to 100 words
Introduction—statement of the purpose of the paper and a strong thesis that summarizes the key point or finding of your paper
Theoretical foundation—presentation of theoretical concepts that serve as the foundation of the paper including a review of the sources used
Discussion—description of the application of the theory and relevant implications including pros and cons, and unresolved issues
Conclusion—summary of thesis and findings
Reference page (3-4 sources other than the textbook)

Religions of South East Asia
Course Paper – Religions of Southeast Asia
Winter 2018
Choice of three topics
You will be writing a paper based on one of the three possible topics listed below. All topics
will require that you take fieldnotes and provide at least one photo of you at your field-site on the
day you are conducting your research. The minimum word count for this assignment is 1500
words.
Topic 1 – Lunar Vietnamese/Chinese New Year Event
There are numerous lunar new year’s events happening all over Southern California. You will
need to report your observations of one of these events in a minimum 1500 word essay (you will
need to include a total word count on your paper). Your paper should be double-spaced and use
proper paragraph formatting. You will want to organize your paper into particular topics based
on your observations. You will have to decide what your paper topics will be based on your own
observations. Your paper should be well organized, clearly written, and incorporate proper
grammar and spelling as appropriate to any university level paper.
You must take thorough field notes while attending the event. Please take paper (a small
notebook is fine) and pen/pencil with you to the event. You also need to take at least 5 pictures at
the event you attend. One of those pictures should feature yourself at the event to that it is clear
you were physically present at the event during the time you describe in your paper and
fieldnotes.
Your paper should be written from a neutral position. You are describing your observations of
the roles and activities of what you see and hear (and possibly taste and smell and touch!) at the
event you attend. If issues of faith, religion, politics, gender and sexuality are described in your
observations, you should maintain a neutral position. Do not let your own cultural biases
influence your descriptions. Instead, you should respectfully describe the ways in which the
actions, performance, practices, etc. were being presented and manifested at the event you
attended.
You will need to include a picture of yourself at the event that clearly shows which New Year’s
event you attended as well as the date you attended.
Please include a word count on your ethnography – 1500 word minimum.
Please attach your fieldnotes (minimum of 4 pages) and your picture(s) to your paper!
You will be receiving a separate document listing various Lunar New Year’s activities that you
could attend for this topic
Topic 2 – Interview: Religious Beliefs and Practices of a SE Asian Immigrant
If you choose the second topic, you will be interviewing an individual who is either a Southeast
Asian immigrant or is the son or daughter of Southeast Asian immigrants about his or her
religious beliefs and practices. You may not do a “self” interview, but you may interview one of
your own family member if they are either a SE Asian immigrant or the son or daughter of one.
You must take fieldnotes during your interview. Your interview should be a minimum of one
hour (longer is better). Please state in your paper how long your interview actually was. Your
interview should focus on your informant’s actual religious beliefs and practices, so tell me
about his or her real life experiences and practices.
Your interview should be open-ended; encourage your informant to talk! You want your
informant to describe their own views, beliefs and experiences. You should always remain
respectful and courteous (and never judgmental) of your informant’s beliefs while conducting
this interview.
You will need to include a picture of yourself that clearly shows you and your informant together
at the time you conducted the interview.
Please include a word count on your ethnography. – 1500 word minimum
Please attach your fieldnotes (minimum of 4 pages) and your picture to your paper!
Your paper should be well organized, clearly written, and incorporate proper grammar and
spelling as appropriate to any university level paper.
Topic 3 – Visit and observe a Southeast Asian Religious Center/Site
If you choose the third topic, you will be visiting and observing a Southeast Asian religious site
in Southern California. Orange County and LA County have many temples, wats, churches,
mosques, ashrams, etc. that have been founded by Southeast Asian immigrants and refugees.
The professor will provide you with a partial list of possible sites that you could choose to visit
for this assignment.
In addition to describing the physical properties of the site, you need to discuss the people that
you observe and the activities/behaviors they engage in at the religious center while you are
there. Please plan to spend at least one hour at the site you visit (more time is better). Please
take fieldnotes while you are there.
Please do always show courtesy and respect when you visit any religious site.
You will need to include a picture of yourself that clearly shows you at the site you chose for this
assignment.
Please include a word count on your ethnography. – 1500 word minimum

GUIDELINES for CASE 1
The company’s external environment consists of three major components:
- The General Environment is composed of dimensions in the broader society that influence and industry and the firms within it. Refer to Chapter 2 in the textbook for more detailed information regarding the Seven segments of the General Environment as follows:
- Global
- Demographic
- Physical
- Political/Legal
- Economic
- Technological
- Socio-Cultural
Based on the information that you have gathered on your Company, textbook, and research, you are to determine which aspect(s) of the general environment affect your company. Select the Top Three segments with supporting evidences (scholarly articles, textbook refences and the case study) the impact the most.
Next, you will make an evaluation(s) as to whether they are opportunities or threats to the company’s performance.
- The Industry Environment: Porter’s Five Forces Framework
The industry environment refers to the forces that directly influences the profitability of the industry as follows:
- Threats of new entrants
- Bargaining power of suppliers
- Bargaining power of buyers
- Rivalry among existing firms
- Threats of product substitutes. State, where necessary, if opportunities exist for product complement.
Porter’s five forces (and product complement) model is a conceptual framework for analyzing the industry environment. Based on the information gathered about your company, textbook and research, determine the importance of each force in Porter’s model; also, offer reasons and cite references.
For example, under the threat of new entrants, there are barriers to entry and how existing firms will react. Some of the barriers to entry include high initial capital set-up costs or government regulations that will make a weak or strong threat of new entrants. If so, what are the entry barriers?
- Competitor Analysis
The competitor analysis focuses on how the company competes directly with other companies in the same industry. For example, Walmart competes with Amazon; Apple vs. Samsung; Home Depot with Lowe’s.
Identify the Top Three competitors in your industry and briefly discuss the followings:
- Where/how does your company hold an advantage over the competitors?
- What will your competitors do in the near future (next 6 months to a year)?
- What should your company do to remain competitive?
- The Organization’s Resources
Resources, capabilities and core competencies are the foundation of competitive advantage. For this section, you are asked to do the followings:
- Briefly discuss the components of an Internal Analysis (Refer to Figure 3.1, chapter 3 in the textbook)
- Include a discussion of Value Chain Analysis
- Which value chain activity provides the most value to your company and why? Offer examples and cite references.
- Does your company engage in any outsourcing activities? If yes, explain and offer an example.
NOTE: Please be reminded that:
- This is an INDIVIDUAL assignment
- Component paper # 1 is worth 15% of your final grade

Child Advocacy Assignment
Purpose: The major aim of the first learning project is to provide students an opportunity to apply their knowledge of hearsay exceptions relevant to cases involving allegations of child sexual abuse. There are two parts to the project: You will choose one of the three hearsay exceptions that are relevant to cases involving allegations of child sexual abuse. Next, you will write a vignette (i.e., short story, scenario) that illustrates an abuse disclosure that fits the exception. Details related to the context of the disclosure and statements made will help you with part two of the project (~1 double-spaced). Explain the rationale for the hearsay exception you chose (i.e., if a statement meets the exception why is it considered more reliable than not?) Next, you will evaluate the degree to which the disclosure in your vignette meets the hearsay exception. For example, if you choose the excited utterance exception, you’ll consider the disclosure context and statements described in your scenario against the list of factors a judge uses to determine if statements meet that requirement. You should use course readings to support your response (Meyers, 2011 should be most helpful). (~2 pages double-spaced) Reminders: You should read through the writing tips provided in Canvas (e.g., no direct quotes from external readings allowed). I expect students will edit and proof their responses so each is submitting their best work. You are welcome to discuss the project with other students in the class. You are encouraged to share thoughts about your understanding of hearsay testimony. You are not allowed to submit the same work (as another student or that you’ve submitted in the past). Be careful not to accidentally or purposefully plagiarize ideas (for either part of the project)

Turnitin
This assignment will be submitted to Turnitin. Turnitin is a web-based service that checks the
assignment against its database of materials that contain other learner’s work as well as electronic
academic materials.
Learners find the Turnitin report useful for editing papers. The report will include incorrect use of
referencing, too many quotes, and paraphrases. If the Turnitin report, for your first draft, shows a high
percentage of matching text, this will give you an opportunity to review and edit your assignment for
proper citations and more original analysis. Once you make your edits, it is possible to submit your work
to Turnitin again. Turnitin will know not to match the text in your second draft with text in your first
draft, and so on. It is advisable to wait at least 24 hours before you submit the second draft.
Faculty find Turnitin useful as a tool to teach learners proper citation practices and highlight the need
for more learner originality. Faculty can also use Turnitin as a tool to detect possible instances of
plagiarism and academic dishonesty.
Academic dishonesty can lead to a zero for this. Ensure you have read the Chiu School of Business
Learner Handbook for more information about the Academic Honesty Policy. If you have any questions,
contact your instructor.
