ANSWER RELEVANCE   ARGUMENT & COHERENCE   EVIDENCE   SUMMARY
First

≥70
Innovative response, answers the question fully, addressing the learning objectives of the assessment task.  Evidence of critical analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

A clear, consistent in-depth critical and evaluative argument, displaying the ability to develop original ideas from a range of sources.  Engagement with theoretical and conceptual analysis.

Wide range of appropriately supporting evidence provided, going beyond the recommended texts.  Correctly referenced. An outstanding, well-structured and appropriately referenced answer, demonstrating a high degree of understanding and critical analytic skills.
Upper Second

60-69

A very good attempt to address the objectives of the assessment task with an emphasis on those elements requiring critical review. A generally clear line of critical and evaluative argument is presented.  Relationships between statements and sections are easy to follow, and there is a sound, coherent structure. A very good range of relevant sources is used in a largely consistent way as supporting evidence.  There is use of some sources beyond recommended texts.  Correctly referenced in the main. The answer demonstrates a very good understanding of theories, concepts and issues, with evidence of reading beyond the recommended minimum.  Well organised and clearly written.
Lower Second

50-59

Competently addresses objectives, but may contain errors or omissions and critical discussion of issues may be superficial or limited in places.

Some critical discussion, but the argument is not always convincing, and the work is descriptive in places, with over-reliance on the work of others.

A range of relevant sources is used, but the critical evaluation aspect is not fully presented.  There is limited use of sources beyond the standard recommended materials.  Referencing is not always correctly presented.

The answer demonstrates a good understanding of some relevant    theories, concepts and issues, but there are some errors and irrelevant material included.  The structure lacks clarity.

The work is descriptive with minimal critical discussion and limited theoretical engagement. A limited range of relevant sources used without appropriate presentation as supporting or conflicting evidence coupled with very limited critical analysis. Referencing has some errors. Some understanding is demonstrated but is incomplete, and there is evidence of limited research on the topic. Poor structure and presentation, with few and/or poorly presented references.
Fail

<40
Some deviation from the objectives of the assessment task.  May not consistently address the assignment brief.  At the lower end fails to answer the question set or address the learning outcomes.  There is minimal evidence of analysis or evaluation. Descriptive with no evidence of theoretical engagement, critical discussion or theoretical engagement.  At the lower end displays a minimal level of understanding. Very limited use and application of relevant sources as supporting evidence.  At the lower end demonstrates a lack of real understanding.  Poor presentation of references. Whilst some relevant material is present, the level of understanding is poor with limited evidence of wider reading. Poor structure and poor presentation, including referencing. Democratic Process an Analytical Essay

Most Americans share a similar political culture, including a belief that open and fair
elections are essential to maintaining a strong democracy in the United States.
Leading up to the 2016 presidential election, 16 government intelligence agencies independently investigated the security issues, and concluded that the Russian government engaged in the hacking of various elections related platforms, in an effort to interfere with the US election process. Read the following:
Joint Statement from the Department Of Homeland Security and Office of the Director of National Intelligence on Election Security: “The U.S. Intelligence Community (USIC) is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations. The recent disclosures of alleged hacked e-mails on sites like DCLeaks.com and WikiLeaks and by the Guccifer 2.0 online persona are consistent with the methods and motivations of Russian-directed efforts. These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the US election process. Such activity is not new to Moscow—the Russians have used similar tactics and techniques across Europe and Eurasia, for example, to influence public opinion there. We believe, based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only Russia’s senior-most officials could have authorized these activities (October 7, 2016).”
Answer the following questions in analytical essay form:
1. How important is democracy in the United States?
a. In your essay identify and define the essential principles (elements) of the shared political
culture in the United States.
2. How important is it to you that a foreign country interfered in US elections?
a. Does it matter that the foreign interference originates in a country that does not share the same political culture as the US, or other Western democracies?
b. What would you expect to replace democracy in the US?

he financial crisis facing Eurozone member countries in Europe

Section B requires an essay style response to the questions and you are to answer only one of the two questions in this section. This section requires appropriate use of referencing to answer the question.
The word count mentioned in each section is indicative of the length of answers expected. As per accepted practice, a plus or minus 10% to the word limit is deemed acceptable. Please keep to the word limit as I will stop reading and assessing an answer to a question when it exceeds this limit.
1. “The financial crisis facing Eurozone member countries in Europe lies in the fact that the
whole Euro single currency project was ill-conceived from the start. New ideas and solutions
need to be found to accommodate such an economically diverse range of Eurozone
members if the single currency project is to survive in the long term”. Discuss.
OR
2. The Leader of Germany’s Social Democrats Martin Schulz has called for a “United States of
Europe” by 2025 …He added “Economic, cultural, social and political integration: The best
protection against fascism, war and anti-Democrats.” Source; DW 08/12/17
http://www.dw.com/en/spds-martin-schulz-defends-his-united-states-of-europe/a-
41714365
In light of the above statement by Martin Schulz, and despite the potentially unrealistic time frame he suggests in achieving such an outcome, discuss and explain what you see as being the main benefits and challenges for the EU, in pursuing greater political integration.
As you have only 1,500 words for this essay, if you so choose, you can give greater emphasis
in your answer to either the benefits OR the challenges of further political integration.

Israel and the Palestinians (MOD 3 Case)

Israel and the Palestinians
Assignment Overview
A few years ago, Israel and the Palestinian Authority appeared to be very close to a final peace agreement. That never happened and now the two sides appear to be in a permanent state of war. In fact, a wall has been built by the Israelis to divide the two peoples.
Try to understand the relationship between Israel and the Palestinians. Any Palestinian state will be deeply dependent on Israel as the Palestinian people are very much a part of the Israeli economy. On the other hand, they would be two separate states. So, to what extent does a resolved situation, that is, peace, make a separate state part of a unified situation?
Case Assignment
Address the following questions in a 2- to 3-page report:
What is the history (ancient and modern) of this land that explains the current dispute between the Palestinians and Israelis?
What are the challenges facing its resolution?
What recommendations would you offer to advance that outcome?
What do you think will be the outcome of the next peace talks? Why?
Please hand this assignment in by the end of this module.
Upload your papers for grading.
Assignment Expectations
The cases in POL 201 generally call for a detailed analysis of a particular situation. In addressing case questions, such an analysis requires some historical perspective and a balanced and thorough consideration of challenges facing efforts at unification or, at least, the peaceful resolution of disputes between peoples in the nation being studied.
