Biographical information

The Project Paper focuses on a suggested topic related to art, architecture, history, music, or literature. The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities to be the creative, innovative, and critical thinker you already are!
Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that responds to each of the items described in the topic.
TOPIC:
Women’s Roles Then & Now.Script. Script a conversation between two (2) notable women from the 18th and / or 19th century on the roles women should play in society. Within the dialogue, include:

3-What opinions each of the women might have on the role the women should play in society during their lifetimes.
4-What each of the women might think about women’s current roles.
For the topic you choose:
1-Support your ideas with specific, illustrative examples. If there are questions or points associated with your chosen topic, be sure to answer all of the listed questions and address all of the items in that topic. If your topic asks you to do several things related to the topic, be sure to do each of the things listed.
2-The listed topics each have a certain writing genre with it (written speech, memo, poem with essay, scripted dialogue, etc). From this you can see that there is a fun, creative writing aspect to this assignment. In most cases students should stick with the genre as listed. However, your instructor might suggest some alternative genre on one of the topics. As a student, you also can propose to your instructor some alternative genre for the topic you choose—something different from what is listed. Since not all such proposals can work, be aware that your proposal will get consideration, but may or may not be approved. Also, if you make such a proposal, please do so before the end of Week 5.
3-Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text. NoteWikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

business practices – Uber

Few companies these days are as controversial for their business practices as Uber. However, in spite of the negative publicity they are a very widely used and growing service company that is replacing taxi cabs and even leading some people to give up their own car in favor of using Uber to get to work. The number of drivers also keeps growing.
There are too many controversies regarding Uber to keep track of, so we will focus just on three that we will examine from a utilitarian perspective. Below are three issues to look into for the assignment, and a few articles to get you started on your research:
1. Uber uses money from investors to keep its prices very low. They lose money on many rides, but they are willing to lose money to put the competition out of business:

2. Uber classifies their drivers as contractors rather than employees, which keeps labor costs down:

3. Uber has allegedly used technology to evade the authorities and regulations:

4. Brusseau, J. (2012). Chapter 3: Theories of consequence ethics: Traditional tools for making decisions in business when the ends justify the meansBusiness Ethics. Lardbucket Books. Retrieved from: https://2012books.lardbucket.org/books/business-ethics/s07-theories-of-consequence-ethics.html
5. Brusseau, J. (2012). Chapter 3: Theories of consequence ethics: Traditional tools for making decisions in business when the ends justify the meansBusiness Ethics. Lardbucket Books. Retrieved from: https://2012books.lardbucket.org/books/business-ethics/s07-theories-of-consequence-ethics.html
For this assignment, you will be examining these practices of Uber through the lens of utilitarian ethics. You will need to put aside any personal feelings in favor or against Uber and instead take the cold and logical approach of weighing the good caused by their practices vs. the harm caused by their actions for each of the three issues above.
Case Assignment
Once you have finished reviewing the required background readings on utilitarian ethics and corporate social responsibility and had a chance to research the three issues on Uber mentioned above, write a 4- to 5-page paper addressing the following:
1. Who are Uber’s main stakeholders? Your answer should be based both on your research on Uber and the discussion in Brusseau (2012) about stakeholders.
2. Which stakeholders are harmed and which stakeholders benefit from Uber’s strategy of using investor money to keep prices artificially low? Does the good outweigh the bad, or vice versa? Apply the Utility Test: http://ethicsops.com/UtilityTest.php
3. Which stakeholders are harmed and what stakeholders benefit from Uber’s policy of classifying drivers as contractors rather than employees? Apply the Utility Test and explain whether the good outweighs the harm or not.
4. Finally, discuss which shareholders are harmed and which stakeholders are helped by Uber’s use of advanced software to evade authorities? Again use the Utility Test and explain whether the good outweighs the harm or not.

There are two steps to this assessment. First, evaluate your group’s communication effectiveness by rating each of the following on a scale of 1 (Not Well) to 5 (Very Well).
As a Group, How Well Did You (on a scale from 1 to 5):

  • Demonstrate respect for all
  • Encourage feedback
  • Encourage expression of opinion
  • Build on others’ ideas
  • Ask for clarification of ideas
  • Demonstrate equality
  • Address disagreements or misunderstandings
  • Stay on task

Second, answer these questions:

  • Describe the top two strengths and two weaknesses of your team. Give examples of what your team did well and not well. Do not mention anyone by name.
  • What was an area of strength that you brought to the group? An area where you could have improved?
  • What type of decision-making method described in the textbook from last week did your group use?
  • When you are in a group and you see some of the weakness that you mentioned above, what can you as a group member do?
