Write a 4-5 page paper on one of documents posted on Blackboard or handed out in class..
What I want you to do is discuss how your chosen document relates to the historical period during which it was written. In other words, is there information in the text that tells you more about the British history from 1688 to 1750 or resonates with information that you are obtaining from the textbook? Be sure to quote from the document to substantiate the argument that you are making. What I am not interested in is how the document might be relevant to the present; instead I want you to present your document as a close-up picture of a small moment of the past as it really was: how were they perceiving issues, what problems needed to be addressed, what language did they use (sometimes difficult for us in the 21st century to understand) to frame their approach to contemporary problems. In general, what you are trying to do is contextualize the document you are working on.

Neocolonialism in Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic and Haiti-United States marines intervened in Nicaragua from 1912-1932. They occupied the Dominican Republic from 1916-1924 and Haiti from 1915-1934.
D5
United States marines intervened in Nicaragua from 1912-1932. They occupied the Dominican Republic from 1916-1924 and Haiti from 1915-1934. The United States ruthlessly pursued its interests in each of these nations. In Nicaragua, U.S. marines ousted an anti-American president, José Santos Zelaya, and ensured the government would not sell rights to a canal that would compete with the recently completed one in Panama. In the Dominican Republic, U.S. marines ensured the nation’s debts would be paid promptly so that European warships would not appear in Santo Domingo and demand repayment by force. Haiti was occupied by U.S. forces to impose stability and limit German influence. U.S. occupation was resisted by Augusto Sandino’s guerrilla band in Nicaragua, by Dominican gavilleros (pictured) and Haitian cacos. On the other hand, U.S. troops oversaw the building of roads and schools. They also initiated improvements in public health and sanitation. In short, U.S. occupation brought both positives and negatives.
For this week’s discussion, choose one quote from “Under the Gun” and one quote from “The Second Nicaraguan Civil War/The Sandino Chase” that describe important themes. Afterwards, in a supporting paragraph of approximately 400 words, elaborate on the significance of your chosen themes. This discussion will be worth a total of four points with one point each awarded for 1) your choice of themes, 2) elaborating on those themes using relevant information from the readings 3) factual accuracy and 4) grammar. Students may earn up to an additional point by commenting on a fellow student’s discussion in such a way that improves his or her understanding of the topic.
This discussion will be due promptly at 10 p.m. on Sunday, February 25. No late work will be accepted for any reason.
The Essay will explore these two questions to build a critical argument: 1) For the group you have chosen, what are the cultural particularities that do or might create a conflict with the mainstream culture this group is associated with?

prejudiced attitudes-What elements of this scenario make it an example of prejudice?
Consider these examples from a typical, large suburban high school.
- Kelly is a sophomore who attends a meeting of the all-male robotics club. She says she has an interest in joining the club and working on building a robot for an upcoming competition. The male members of the club snicker at her and one boy puts his foot out and “accidently” trips Kelly in the aisle. The male teacher in the room tells the boys to settle down, but he also tells Kelly that he isn’t sure she would have the necessary skills for the club, since the other members have all had several years experience building robots. “After all,” he said, “you were probably playing with dolls for all the years these boys were building things and experimenting with electronics.”
- John is an artistic, intelligent boy who is not interested in sports or other “typical” male pursuits. He enjoys writing fiction and poetry for the school newspaper. When he gets on the school bus no one will share a seat with him. He ends up standing and a group of students in the back of the bus harass and heckle him, calling him homophobic slurs.
- In the teachers’ lounge, a group of Caucasian teachers huddle around the water cooler gossiping about why one of their fellow teachers, an Asian-American woman, was promoted to assistant principle over other teachers with more years of experience. “I know she has a master’s degree, but I still think this is clearly an affirmative action thing—they just want to get more minorities in administration. They don’t care about who is really qualified, and that’s all there is to it.”
Select one of the examples above that you feel illustrates prejudiced attitudes. Answer the following:
- What elements of this scenario make it an example of prejudice?
- Is there also discrimination present?
- Is there stereotyping in this example?
- Explain why the predjudice is occurring using the following terms: Social categorization, in-group, out-group, and ingroup-bias.
- Based on your readings, what type of intervention could help to reduce prejudice in a situation like this?
Please be sure you address each question, using terms and concepts from your text. A good initial discussion response should be at least 150–250 words in length.
