FLS 363-501 DRAMA—Spring 2018
Assignment 1: Research Paper on the adaptations of Romeo and Juliet
An adaptation of a literary work can be done in various media of expression through many genres. It may remain faithful to the original or modify certain aspects of it to suit a different time, place, culture, or purpose. Romeo and Juliet is one of the most enduring texts in English literature which has been re-imagined, re-told, or translated an almost infinite number of times. There are numerous film and stage productions, as well as novels, ballet, opera, documentaries and even video games which are based on the Shakespearean text. Classic adaptation studies usually focus on the issue of “fidelity”: how much of the original has been retained by the “adapter”. They also remain concerned with the “superiority” of the original text to any new re-workings of its plot or genre. More recently, studies of adaptations have moved beyond these issues to focus on the inter-textuality and cultural, economic, political, historical, literary, and social dimensions of adaptation.
Instructions:
In this assignment, you are required to write a paper analyzing one of the many adaptations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet:
1- Choose an adaptation either from the titles listed here or from the hundreds of other adaptations found online. Most commonly, film and musical adaptations are chosen for study including West Side Story (stage musical 1958; film adaptation 1961), Franco Zaffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet (1968), Baz Luhrmann’s William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996), John Madden’s Shakespeare in Love (1998), and Carlo Carlei’s Romeo and Juliet (written by Julian Fellows, 2013).
2- Your paper should establish your study within contemporary adaptation theory and analyze the adaptation individually as well as in relation to the original play.
3- Explore the texts in terms of the difference between media and genre. Ask yourself the question: how does a “film” (or whatever medium you’ve chosen to study) differ from a “stage play” in the techniques they use to deliver a message?
4- You can also explore the significance of the changes that the adaptation has made in relation to the original story, plot, characters, settings, historical period, ending, etc.
5- Another avenue for exploration is to discuss how a certain theme or main idea is represented in the adaptation and the original. This theme should be reflected in your essay title. Avoid retelling the story and focus on a central idea that you can trace throughout the adaptation and the play.
6- The length of your paper should be between 2500 and 3000 words (7-10 double spaced pages)
7- You are expected to consult academic resources (books, articles, reviews, etc.) rather than unverified websites. A minimum of 5 secondary sources is required. Google books is acceptable as long as you cite it properly. Use APA style for your citations and reference list. Avoid Wikipedia. Please be aware that directly quoting from any source without proper citation is considered plagiarism and is punishable, depending on the severity of the case, by deduction of points all the way up to failure of the course and/or expulsion.
8- You are expected to discuss your research findings in class during our “Adaptations” meeting. This is NOT a formal presentation and it will NOT be graded as part of this assignment. However, it WILL contribute to your overall participation grade.
9- Assignment is due before midnight on Sunday 04/ Feb/ 2018. If you cannot make the deadline, get in touch ahead of time to arrange an extension (only for valid reasons; at the discretion of the tutor).

Diversity Case
Diversity Case. Success in business involves recognizing diversity and cultural practices, and communicating and acting in a socially appropriate manner. The case study will cover communicating and working with individuals with diverse sociocultural identities, including individuals with multiple sociocultural identities.
The diversity case is located in the Harvey & Allard text – page 98 – The Coca-Cola Company: Then and Now. (I have attached the book).
The paper should answer the questions set in the case study (Text Book) and also with contacts to the instructor questions that are in the pictures uploaded.

Biology-research paper:signal path of insulin
Look up signal path of insulin
How the signal pathway runs normally in type 2 diabetes
Find the chemical names of the receptors, different relay molecules, etc.
Discuss how this allows for normal cell/body function
How the disease specifically affects the pathway in type 2 diabetes
How this change surface in cell/body function
What the response leads to
Obesity causes insulin resistance which impairs the metabolism
Research and explain how the signal pathway operates normally without the disease; then discuss how the disease alters the pathway

Biodiversity: effect of light levels in a lake ecosystem
With your team, formulate a general question to narrow and define the topic. For example, if
you wished to determine the effect of pH on biodiversity, you might ask “Do two ecosystems
with consistently different pH exhibit differences in biodiversity that can be explained by pH?”
From such a question, you can then develop hypotheses and predictions.
Alternatively, you might wish for each team member to independently search the literature and
bring back interesting ideas to the team for discussion. The team can discuss all the different
ideas from diverse papers, and decide on the one most interesting to everyone. Your lab instructor may instruct all teams to use either of the above techniques, or may allow the teams to decide which approach to take. The important thing is to choose a topic that is both
interesting and relevant.
2. Use appropriate keywords to use in your search
Identify important keywords. In the example above, you might include “biodiversity, pH,
ecosystem, acid, alkaline,” or any number of terms related to this area. Also consider:
• When to use broad terms, and when to use narrower terms to refine your search
• Use synonyms for your keywords to find every possible variant of the vocabulary used in the
research on this topic.
• Use dictionaries to check spelling and find keyword synonyms
Biodiversity1 – 5
• Using online encyclopedias (e.g., Wikipedia) to find initial background information that might
help you refine your search or choose an area for your research topic.
3. Choose a Database
GoogleScholar is an excellent place to start, but there are other databases available through
the UM library system that you may wish to use, as well.
4. Perform your Search
• Use Boolean operators (always use them un upper case) to combine search
keywords.
• Truncate (shorten) your keywords to make your search broader.
• If you are not sure how to spell a keyword, use wildcards.
• To narrow your search, use phrases enclosed on quotation marks. For example, “pH
effect on species richness”.
• Use the database to search for keywords in different places, such as “title” or “abstract”.
• If you find a useful article by a particular author, search that author’s name to find
papers on the same topic.
• If you find a useful article, search its Literature Cited section to find additional, related
sources.
• Make sure the literature you are citing is recent and current.
• Make sure the literature you use is from a peer-reviewed, scientific journal.
• Make sure to identify whether your source is a journal article, a book, a thesis, etc.
5. Determine the availability of the material you wish to reference.
If the papers you wish to read are not available online, you may be able to get a copy by
contacting the people at the UM Richter Library Help Desk. If our library does not have the
paper you need, they may be able to get it via interlibrary loan. Since this may require some
turnaround time, start this assignment immediately, and don’t find yourself hamstrung by time
constraints.
Each student will be assigned the task of finding at least three relevant papers from a
peer-reviewed scientific journal on the topic of biodiversity (possibly narrowed to an area discussed in advance by your team). Once you find the publications of interest, read them completely and analytically.
Your assignment is to:
(1) a copy of each scientific paper relevant to your study
(2) a one-page summary and review of the papers
(Use the template attached for this.)
Motivation and Performance Management
Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:
Compare the difference between job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Determine which is more strongly related to performance for your selected company.
Apply motivational theory and performance management principles to evaluate the company as a potential employer.
Use at least three (3) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not quality as academic resources.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
