United States is not really a democracy

Final Paper Prompt
Spring 2018
In the format of a typed, double-spaced, 5-7 page essay, please address the following:
“Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that
affect their lives. Democracy allows eligible citizens to participate equally – either directly or through
elected representatives – in the proposal, development, and creation of laws.”
The United States prides itself on being the first nation in modern history to adopt a democratic
constitution. Our government even tries to spread democracy to other countries. But, is the Unites States
really a democracy in the full sense of the word?
Write an essay that argues that the United States is not really a democracy. In doing so, emphasize nondemocratic
practices, outcomes, and the inconsistencies of American politics.
Suggestions:
I encourage you to do some outside research. You are required to have at least one source which you find
through Jstor.org. However, it is entirely possible (though, much more difficult) to write an excellent
paper based primarily (not solely) on the readings you have already done for this class and on the lectures
(no need to cite lecture). The best papers would probably include sources/articles that provide evidence
for the counterargument (i.e. the US is a democracy).
A good starting point would be for you to look more closely at:
– Gerrymandering
– The Electoral College
– The Senate
– The intentions of the Founding Fathers
– Etc.
* Please note that you are not allowed to turn in work that you have already turn in to another class, doing so will
get you a zero on the assignment.

The crossover assignment is an academic paper, written in English; and it
should be between 1,500 and 2,000 words, including footnotes but excluding
the bibliography. For the cross-over assignment, please use 1.5 line spacing and Times New Roman size 12. When referencing sources in footnotes, students should aim for completeness and consistency. A commonly used citation style is offered by Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA). For the footnotes, please use 1.0 line spacing and Times New Roman size 10.

Syrian war

Using the New York Times, research and chose three articles from 2017/2018 that discuss the Syrian War and ongoing refugee migration. Be sure to find at least one article that addresses the plight of women and girls caught in the conflict. Synthesize the information from the three articles into a 2-page paper that summarizes the most important information in a logical sequence. this is not an article report, but a synthesis; so, for example, a paragraph should include information from more than one article. The only sources used should be the three New York Times articles. The summary should answer the following questions:
1. Why is there a war in Syria and when did it begin? What are the complicating factors that make achieving peace quite difficult?
2. How has the war contributed to internal displacement of individuals, as will as larger refugee exodus out of Syria and to Europe? (when possible, use stats to support your discussion)
3. What are the particular experiences of girls and women in this conflict?

The British colonization of Virginia, Maryland, the Carolinas, and Georgia in the 1600s was marked by an extensive demand for agricultural labor.  As the assigned class readings show, planters shifted from using indentured servants for much of the 1600s to African slaves by the late 1600s and early 1700s. What factors contributed to the development of indentured servitude and slavery as labor systems? Why did the transition from indentured servitude to slavery occur?

Your paper should follow standard grammar, punctuation, and citation methods (APA, MLA, or Chicago).  Citation guides are in the resources folder on Sakai.

MANAGERIAL DECISION AREA

Portfolio Paper should concern a major MANAGERIAL DECISION AREA that would be made within a firm. It is suggested but not necessary that this decision area would be one in which you have personal experience. Some examples would include: (1) Starting a new business or entering a new market; (2) Hiring part-time workers rather than full time to handle an increase in demand for the company’s product; (3) Outsourcing work versus doing it “in-house;” (4) Negotiating labor or supplier contracts; (5) Developing either a personal or departmental budget and then controlling toward it; (6) Purchasing versus leasing machinery; and (7) Phasing out a product or moving out of a market. Note these are only a few examples, but I would like to see your topic selection posted on the discussion board by the Wednesday of Unit two.

Create and describe the key messages from a branding perspective that you wish to deliver to the new market segment that will provide the greatest impact.
Explain why this message will appeal directly to the new market segment.
Discuss whether digital or traditional approaches will provide the best promotional channels for your new target market, and explain why.
Identify 2 communication channels that will reach your specific target segment, and explain why these are appropriate for your specific target segment.
