Historical Tour Proposal

Imagine that an eccentric billionaire has offered to send a group of students on a 5-week tour of important places in world history before 1500. If you can create a winning proposal, your proposal will be funded with you as a paid tour guide. Your job is to select the places that the students will visit, write up an itinerary (dates on which they will visit each place), and write a narrative which explains the historical significance of the places you have chosen and justifies your choices.
Your proposal must include:
1. Itinerary. This will give a list of the places that the students will visit, when they will visit them, and how long they will stay there. You do not need to give specific dates, but can make clear the order of visit as “week 1” or “day 13.” Unless you indicate otherwise, the reader will assume that students will travel by the most convenient modern method of transportation (planes, trains, buses, etc.) and stay in standard tourist accommodations. If you want to be more creative, however, you can specify that they will be traveling by camel and sleeping in tents, for example (explain why unusual choices are appropriate in section 2). Be sure that you are realistic in allowing time for travel between regions. Your itinerary must include sites on at least three different continents. (Remember that this is funded by a billionaire, so money is no object.)
This section should be in list or table form. Save explanations and details for Section 2.
2. Explanatory narrative. This is the part of the proposal where you explain and justify your choices. You need to address the overall plan of your tour (what theme unites these places in world history) as well as the historical significance of each place that you include. Be sure to cite sources in the text of this narrative. This section should include a strong introduction (in which you lay out and explain the theme), several paragraphs justifying the stops along the way, and a conclusion in which you sum up what students should learn from this experience. Cite sources for all information in this section. This should be about 1000-1500 words long (roughly 4 to 6 pages).
You will be graded on how well you justify your overall theme as relevant to world history before 1500 and how well you justify each stop on the tour as adding to students’ understanding of the theme.

3. Bibliography with full citations of sources. Cite sources for ALL information in the text of your proposal and include all sources cited in your proposal in this bibliography. (Include ONLY sources that you actually used. If you use a source, it must be referenced in your proposal; if you did not use it in your proposal, don’t include it in the bibliography.) Acceptable sources are articles from the Oxford Reference Books On-line Premium, Gale Virtual Reference Library (both available from the e-books page on the TSU library web site), JSTOR, and the History Compass Journal in the Wiley Online Library (both JSTOR and the Wiley Online Library are available from the database page on the TSU library web site). You may use travel websites ONLY for information on modern transportation and accommodations (NOT for historical information).

  1. After learning about Reflective Democracy across the United States it is time to learn about how it affects you.  Begin by examining yourself and your surrounding community.  How would you describe your cultural background?  How would you describe the cultural background of your Representative in the Texas Senate? How would you describe the cultural background of the district that he or she represents (and that you are a part of)?   Compare and contrast the culture of the district to the culture of your Representative. Compare and contrast the culture of your Representative and your culture.  Compare and contrast your culture with the culture of the district that you live.  Where do you see the greatest differences between cultures?  What are some advantages and disadvantages of these cultural differences?  How would you work to bridge the divide, if anybetween cultures?
  2. Find a policy issue that your Representative in the Senate has taken a stand on.

Sample policy issues: sales/use of marijuana, constitutional carry/no license required, cell phone use while driving, gender-based bathroom use, sanctuary cities etc..
Explain that issue in detail.  Once you have explained the issue, provide information on where your representative in the Senate stands on the issue.  Where do you stand on the issue?  What do you believe should be done?  What might be an alternative solution?  Thinking about your ideas on the issue, who might object to your viewpoint and what might their objections be?  Once you’ve laid out their objections, respond to them, and explain, with logic, why your perspective is correct and your opponents’ objections are mistaken.

  1. Now that you have officially staked out a policy position, you need to think about how to get it put into action.  Who in the government, and who in your community, do you believe should be involved?  What specific actions should you (and those in the community) take?  Why is it important to get your community involved and what will be the benefits of activating people to the cause?
  2. Let’s assume that you are successful in your efforts, and you achieve your policy goal.  What do you believe will be the consequences of putting this policy into practice?  How far reaching do you think the consequences will be for your community?  Your state?  Your country?  What do you think will be the effects over the short term?  Over the long term?  Be sure to mention both positive and negative consequences that might result?

Portfolio Essay Questions

General Directions:
 
The Portfolio is intended to encourage your reflection on course topics in personally meaningful ways. Your responses should be within the page length guidelines provided for each assignment and no longer than that.  I encourage you to compose outlines and rough drafts prior to writing up the final entries to gauge the length of your project.
 
Your responses should be written in Word files, which are compatible with the Blackboard system.  Be sure to save electronic files on your computer and a flash drive so as not to lose your work.  Responses should be double-spaced using 12-point font and 1 inch margins.  For full credit you must follow the directions in terms of format, length and content. You are encouraged to include photographs or other creative elements.
 
The title page should include your name and title of the course.  Beyond that, the design of the cover page (graphics or photos) is up to you. If you do include graphics within the project those materials will not count as space toward your writing page limits. The overall design of your Portfolio should be attractive and professional looking.
Include a table of contents and remember to number the pages.   A sample table of contents is provided at the end of this document.
 
Submit your Portfolios online by the deadlines using the directions provided on Blackboard for the Turnitin system.  Note that this is a plagiarism detection system.  Do not directly copy the work from your sources or copy the work of a previous student.
 
Projects must be received (you will receive a time stamp from the Blackboard system) by the deadline.  Late assignments will lose 20% of total points and will be accepted only up to two days (48 hours) late.  Plan ahead and submit your materials on time.
 
If you have trouble submitting your work, you must immediately contact me (before the deadline); otherwise your project is considered late.  If you follow directions there will be no problem with your submission of the project.  Thousands of my students have done it.
 
For each section of the Portfolio, copy the headings followed by your responses for a well-organized project. For example, for Section #1 the main heading is Personal Meanings of Travel and the sub-headings are: Favorite Travel Experiences, Qualities That Made These Your Favorite, and Themes Determining the Importance of Travel.  (These are the same as the headings you will find in the sample Table of Contents.)

This online project is associated with fascinating research about attitudes toward various aspects of nondominant cultures.  It is well known that people don’t always “speak their minds” and it is suspected that people don’t always “know their minds.”  Understanding such divergences is important to scientific psychology and for our purposes concerning cross-cultural perspectives.  The Project Implicit web site presents a method that demonstrates the conscious-unconscious divergences much more convincingly than has been possible with previous methods.  Research using this new method has been conducted at the University of Washington, University of Virginia, Harvard, and Yale.
 
On the Project Implicit web site you will find a Demonstration Site and a Research Site.  Choose the Demonstration Site.  There you will find preliminary information and an “important disclaimer.”  Read over this material carefully before you proceed, knowing there is a possibility of encountering interpretations of your test performances with which you may not agree.  If you opt not to proceed please talk with me about an alternative assignment during my office hours.  (Over the past seven years, not a single student has opted out!)

Case Study 1: Two Entrepreneurial Titans – Mary Kay Ash and Anita Roddick
Arguably, no one embodies female entrepreneurship as fully as Mary Kay Ash, the founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics. The initial catalyst for starting Mary Kay Cosmetics was Ash’s frustration with corporate life; when she was the National Director of Sales at World Gift Co., a direct sales company, she was passed over for promotion in favor of a male employee who she had trained. Dispirited, Ash quit World Gift and decided to take her personal savings of $5,000 to start Mary Kay Cosmetics. In 1963, she opened a storefront in Dallas, Texas, with her flagship product – a skin cream. (She had purchased the rights to it from the Heath family for $500.) Her motivation to become an entrepreneur was both personal and economic; she wanted to make money, be her own boss, not be limited by corporate politics, and create opportunities for other women. Within six to eight years, some women in the company earned over $100,000 per year. In 1964, the first annual Mary Kay convention was held in Dallas, where 200 women celebrated the company, its success, and their own. The company grew rapidly between 1974 and 1979; sales tripled and profits doubled.
Ash’s business concept was to offer skincare products through a direct sales force of independent “beauty consultants.” These sales consultants earned commissions from selling products. In 1981, direct selling was a $7.5 billion industry and was popular among women because they could work as much or as little as they wanted to. In the early days of the company, sales consultants sold the products through home beauty demonstrations. Today, in addition to product “parties” in the home, sales consultants sell through the Internet and in their workplaces, if they hold other jobs. The business model was very profitable because overhead cost were kept low (sales consultants worked from home and were not paid salaries). Mary Kay was known for her flamboyance and motivational strategies. Having spent 25 years in direct sales, she knew that recognition and rewards were important to salespeople. The annual Mary Kay conventions became legendary as a way to motivate and reward top saleswomen; pink Cadillacs, luxury vacations, and jewelry were awarded to top performers. In addition to motivating employees through these incentives, Ash provided career paths for women sales consultants. As women brought others into the company, they received higher commissions and could become eligible for higher-level jobs such as sales director, senior sales director, and national director.
Although Mary Kay Ash died in 2001, the company continues with her son at the helm. Today, it does business in 35 markets on five continents, and in 2008 had sales revenues of $2.6 billion. Much of its business is in emerging markets such as China (its second-largest market behind the US), Latin American countries, India, and Eastern Europe. Its product line has expanded greatly (make-up and toiletries have been added) and it now offers products for men such as face soap, shaving foam, and sunscreen. Manufacturing facilities are located in China and Dallas, and distribution centers are in many large cities in the US.
Like Mary Kay, Anita Roddick chose a product category she was familiar with – cosmetics and skincare. She founded The Body Shop, a company producing and retailing beauty products. The company was one of the first to focus on ethical sourcing of materials and fair trade with developing countries. It was also one of the first companies to prohibit animal testing of its products.
Roddick started a business with the aim of providing an income for herself and her two daughters. (Her husband, Gordon Roddick, was in South America for an extended period.) With inspiration from a small cosmetic store in San Francisco selling natural products, she decided to provide a limited number of quality skincare products in refillable containers and in small, sample sizes. After 15 different skin products were created in her garage, she opened her first shop in Brighton, England, in 1976 with a bank loan of £4,000. In the early days of her venture, her aim was to bring in £300 a week, just enough for her family to live on. With the success of the first store, a second store was opened six months later. Soon, every high street (shopping district) of every town in England had a Body Shop. The brand became widely recognized and synonymous with natural products.
Roddick was motivated by both financial security and political activism. She wanted to run an honorable business that did not establish hierarchies, but treated individuals equally. She was also interested in starting a business that furthered her activism. During her life, she had been involved in several causes including animal rights, environmentalism, anti-war protests, and defending human rights.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the company over-expanded, more competition entered the market – especially with availability of products online – and a recession hit in 2000. The Body Shop’s profits declined dramatically and it was sold to L’Oreal in 2006, about a year after Anita Roddick died. Today the company sells make-up, skincare products, shampoos, bath products, and fragrances, and operates in over 2,300 stores in 61 countries across the world.

Originally known as a business to business company, Addison Lee has expanded its business to consumer offering, with 50% of the business going through the company app which was launched in 2009 and a quarter of traffic driven through the website (MarketingWeek, 2017).
As part of their rebrand strategy a bold new premium look and feel was unveiled in 2016, the new logo and colour palette in yellow, black and slate signifies their commitment to offering passengers quality and service (TheDrum, 2016)
Focused on enhancing the customer experience, Addison Lee has invested heavily in mirroring Uber’s London features, like off peak weekend fares, sharing your ETA and driver tipping, additionally, the company announced plans in September 2017 to increase the number of fleet drivers from 3,600 to 4,450 (Smith, 2017).
In increasing the consumer side of business, the company is dedicated to its personalisation strategy, where data is used to offer personalised deals via email or text based on previous journey behaviour. With the recent news that key competitor UBER has lost their operating license in London, Londoners will be seeking out travel alternatives, giving Addison Lee ample opportunity to expand its client base (MarketingWeek 2017).
