MGT211: Human Resource Management case study

Assignment Assignment 1 MGT211: Human Resource Management Assignment No: 1: CASE STUDY Submission Date by students: Before the end of Week- 9th Weight: 5 Marks
Tony has been director of human resources at TEAM FUN! A sporting goods manufacturer and retailer, for three months. He is constantly amazed that the company does so well, considering that everything is so loose.
Nothing is documented about job roles and responsibilities. People apparently have been hired because Kenny and Norton, the owners and founders, liked them or their relatives.
Tony is lunching with Mary, a friend from college who now manages the human resource function for a large financial investor. Tony tells Mary, “I don’t know if I should quit or what. They both got mad at me last week when I suggested smart cards for security. The employee handbook looks like a scrapbook from their kids’ high school football days . . . no, their high school football days. No one has job descriptions. I don’t get it.
Everyone likes working there. The job does get done. Am I the one with the problem?”
Mary replies, “Couldn’t be you! It does sound like a great place to work. Has it grown fast in the past few years?”
“Unbelievably,” Tony says. “It had 25 employees 5 years ago, now we have nearly 150.”
“That’s probably part of it,” Mary answers. “Remember how Dr. Smith said in his class that you could get by without a formal human resource structure up to about 100 employees?”
“Yeah. That was a great class! I met my wife in that class! We did lots of team exercises and projects,” Tony sighs.
Mary nods. “Anyway, maybe you could begin with writing your own job description. That would be a start.”
“Then I could talk about formal job evaluation processes.”
Tony cheers up. “That’s a great idea. Have you used QUICKHR, the new software tool?”
Mary shakes her head. “No, but a package is a good idea. What’s your current HRIS like?” Tony laughs until he can’t catch his breath.
Mary continues, “Okay. That’s another place you could start.”
Questions: 1. Help Tony write his job description. 2. How should he conduct the job analysis? 3. What should he say to Kenny and Norton to ensure their buy-in on this project? 4. How will job descriptions change the organization?

Literature Review Paper on sources related to Hagia Sophia building, Istanbul

Literature Review Paper

Assignment Overview – The first step in any research project is to understand what has already been writtenabout that topic. The universe of previous interpretations and investigations is what constitutes the “literature”on a particular topic, and you or I can’t contribute meaningfully to the conversation about that topic without a thorough understanding of the literature. For that reason, a key part of any research project is a “literature review.”

In a thesis project, even at the undergraduate level, a literature review might take the form of a long essay, dealing with scores of sources. We won’t attempt anything of that scope in this class. Rather we’ll focus on some of the basic skills involved in reviewing the literature, using a limited number of sources. It doesn’t sound exciting, but it gets more interesting if you’re reading your sources critically. Moreover, good academic writing depends on your ability to evaluate sources critically.

For this project, you will discuss four sources related to a particular building. (Hagia Sophia, Istanbul)

Once you have chosen your building, you will need to locate sources. You should consult the bibliography in the textbook as a starting point, but you will probably want to do searches in a number of academic databses. For the purposes of this assignment, you are also required to do a general internet search (to “Google” your topic) and find a non-academic web-site that deals with your building. This can be a Wikipedia page. All-told, you should have at least four sources:

Two academic papers from journals

One discussion of the building in a book

One non-academic or quasi-academic online discussion

Once you’ve read these sources carefully, you should have a pretty good command of the Subject Matter Knowledge you need. This, of course, will be built on the general knowledge of the building or its type gained in class. Analysis and Genre Knowledge (what you will write) – Once you’ve done your research the problem is to format it as literature review. This means doing some analysis. Is each source reliable? What points is each author trying to make? What kinds of information (if any) do they use to support their argument? How do they use images to support their argument? Are there disagreements between them? Your job is to take your insights into these issues and organize them comparatively into a discussion of approaches to the topic.

Synthesis and Rhetorical Knowledge (who will you write for) – Obviously, this is an academic paper, but ideally you need to have a reason to be comparing these sources, beyond the fact that you were assigned to do so. I’d like you to assume that you are developing your literature review for a larger case study project with the goal of building a new example of that type. You should assume that you are writing because you have a commission from a rich and powerful client who wants to fund construction of the type of building you’re studying. Obviously, you don’t know enough about this client to tailor your message to their specific interests. Nevertheless, you should think about communicating your research to someone who actually wants to build. This should help you decide what information is really central and what points may be left out.

A good example of rhetorical knowledge in this case would be to recognize that there is no need to include the introductory paragraph of the traditional threeparagraph essay. You can get right into the topic without any “throat-clearing” about “since the beginning of time,” or whatever you might be tempted to write as an introduction.

Writing Process Knowledge (how you will write) – I’ve written this brief with a lot of second person pronouns. Focusing on what YOU need to do in this assignment. The paper itself would be primarily descriptive and therefore in third person. This is an example of writing process knowledge, using knowledge of the genre and the rhetorical situation to make judgments about how you should phrase things and organize your thoughts. Another example is using proper names and references to make sure the reader understands which of your sources you’re describing at any particular point in the paper. Writing Process Knowledge also includes basic mechanics (spelling, grammar, punctuation) and proper citation and bibliography format.Grading will be based on your success in addressing all of the kinds of knowledge listed in bold above. Here are the percentages:

Subject matter knowledge 50%

Genre knowledge 10%

Rhetorical knowledge 10%

Writing process knowledge 30% (includes spelling, grammar, citation format)

The paper should be no more than 1500 words. Use a standard font . All sources you consult should be listed under “References” at the end of your assignment. This bibliography should be in MLA format, as should any parenthetical citations within the text. Note that quotes from your sources must be properly formatted within the text and given correct citations. Failure to meet this requirement will be considered plagiarism and could result in trouble you do not want to have.

Child Abuse
Ron
It was part of my childhood to be beaten so badly that my eyes would be swollen shut for days
on end. I had an uncle who was . . . he was a sadist. He was brutal. He was… He was absolutely
insane. And I suffered beatings at his hands time and time and time again. He would be the only
father figure that I would know as a child because my mother and him lived together all
throughout the earliest part of my childhood. My mother was as well . . . she was a violent
person. Any small thing that annoyed her, it was taken out on us kids.
My mother handed me over to a pedophile when I was 5, and by then, I—you would have
thought that I was conditioned to handle . . . the horrors of my life, but this added a new
dimension to my suffering, and I found it almost unbearable to deal with. So, as a kindergartner,
I would have to leave kindergarten class and go home and have sex with this man who was in his
50s.
I remember the long walk home—and crying. And falling down and having to get back up and
walking along, and falling down and crying and getting back up and walking on. I had to adjust
to that situation. I had no choice but to shoulder this responsibility, and I learned that food meant
sex for me. Young in life, I would turn to drugs. And that would be a friend of mine for a long, long, long time. My journey has been an enormous struggle for me.
I’ve known years and years of depression. I’ve, uh…I’ve, uh…I’ve been physically sick in times in my life. I lost my job. I had no friends. I… I assumed I would die. I never expected to live through this. I don’t think being abused as a child goes away. There’s things that I deal with as an adult now that, uh, it’s kind of like problem . . . trouble shooting. I maintain taking care of my mental health and my emotional health, and I’ve learned over the years to be fairly good at it. I know that I am a high-functioning abuse survivor. I have a propensity towards honesty, whereas my siblings don’t. They . . . they want to just forget it. They don’t want to think about it. But I
think it’s more insidious than that. We were made to witness crimes committed against one another over and over again. It’s like we’re . . .we hold the truth, and we can’t get near one another. It’s too horrible. To even see each other is so painful.
Elder Abuse
Rose
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia had taken their toll on 78 year old Rose. Those were the reasons her family checked her into an assisted living center.
Located in an upscale subdivision, the assisted-living center promised “to preserve each person’s dignity by honoring his or her physical, emotional, intellectual, social and spiritual needs.”
Rose’s daughter – who did not want to reveal her identity due to the nature of this story – said it was a painful choice to make. “It tears you up,” she said. “It’s hard to watch that and know there’s nothing you can do.”
A doctor and judge had ruled her mother incapacitated – unable to make decisions for herself. They appointed a legal guardian, shortly before she began her stay at the center. But after only a few months of living there, her daughter says she noticed a change in the woman who was once so warm and engaging. “(My mother) became more and more distraught,” she said. “She talked about wanting to move. She became more withdrawn and upset.”
Rose’s legal guardian and family claimed in a lawsuit filed against the facility that she was sexually assaulted twice by a male resident described as a “sexual predator.” Claiming the center failed to protect the woman, the suit further alleged the man’s “sexual activities were known to the administration, but nothing was done to protect his victims.”
The woman’s family soon removed her from the facility, after seeing the decline in her emotional state and physical appearance.
Rose is currently residing in another assisted living center, and although she appears to have improved, her physical state had deteriorated to a point to where there is no recovery. Her Alzheimer’s symptoms had also drastically accelerated while in the other center, which cannot be reversed. Rose’s daughter is devastated. “I thought I had prepared myself for my mother’s aging, especially when we learned she had Alzheimer’s. That was such a difficult diagnosis to hear and we all wanted the best care for her. Now I feel like we made an awful situation worse. I can never forgive myself.”

mental disorders- Why is determining abnormal behavior or a mental disorder so difficult?

Most mental disorders lie on a continuum with “normal” behavior at one end. For example, nearly everyone has a fear of something, but it does not rise to the level of a phobia. A behavior may seem abnormal in one context but completely normal in another context. These two aspects show why it can be challenging to properly identify mental disorders.
research the principles and methods of identifying mental disorders. Note particularly the diversity of views and the challenges of identification. Based on your research, write a reflective essay. Use the following question to direct your thoughts and organize your essay:

  • · Why is determining abnormal behavior or a mental disorder so difficult?
  • To develop your essay, keep in mind issues such as the role of social norms in defining the abnormal, the multiplicity of indicators of what is abnormal, the stigma suffered by those identified as abnormal, and finally the need for objectivity in dealing with the concept.
  • Discuss the CHALLENGES FACED IN IDENTIFYING ABNORMAL BEHAVIOURS

SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND SOCIAL INTERACTION

ASSIGNMENT 2
SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND SOCIAL INTERACTION Due Week 6: 150 points
You’ve learned how important groups, roles, statuses, and social networks are in the structure of society. In this assignment, you’ll demonstrate what you’ve learned by identifying and describing examples from your own life. You will also have a chance to practice some smart strategies for managing your digital presence in your own “online” social networks.
Instructions: Complete both parts of the assignment by following the instructions below.
PART A: YOUR STATUS SET, ROLES, AND ROLE PROBLEMS 1) Status Set:
a) List a status set that includes at least five statuses that you currently have.
• Remember: A status is simply a position you fill in society. It may be a job title, but it could also include a position you fill within a family or a community. For more information, review Section 4.3 in your webtext.
2
b) Label each status in your status set as ascribed, achieved, or master.
• Remember: An ascribed status is one you’re born with and have no control over. An achieved status is reached through your own efforts or simply good or bad luck. A master status is so important that it overrides your other statuses. For more information, review Section 4.3 in your webtext.
2) Roles:
a) Choose one status from your status set.
b) Describe the role that is associated with the status.
c) Describe how you learned that role.
• Remember: A role is the behavior expected of someone with a certain status. For more information, review Section 4.4 in your webtext.
3) Role Conflict:
a) Choose two statuses from your status set.
b) Describe a time when you experienced a conflict because of the demands of your two different roles associated with those statuses.
c) List at least two different ways you could have resolved the conflict. For example, could you ask someone for help? Or could you go online to research a possible solution?
d) Describe the approach you took to resolve the conflict. What was the result? Would you do things differently next time?
3
PART B: SOCIAL NETWORKS AND POSITIVE IMPRESSIONS 1) Social Networks:
A social network includes all of the relationships that link you to other people and groups. Through social networks, you can connect with people who may be able to offer you valuable advice, introductions, or op- portunities.
a) Identify an area of interest that you would like to pursue, either professionally or personally. It could be a job or industry, a volunteer position, or a social group.
• Examples: accounting, volunteering with the elderly, joining a book club
b) Identify and describe three people in your social network (people you know personally) who have a connection, or might know someone connected to your area of interest. These three people may be work colleagues, family members, or close friends.
• Remember: For privacy reasons, do not list their names in this assignment. Instead, identify them as Person A, B, and C.
c) For each person, write a brief description of why you selected them, and how they are connected to your area of interest.
d) Identify the person who you think is the best contact for you to communicate with about your area of interest. Why did you choose that person?
4
2) Positive Impressions: When you interact with other people in your social networks, you usually want to make a positive impression on them. Online, you can do that by using certain strategies when you create profiles.
a) Read this beginner’s guide to using LinkedIn, a professional social network: http://www.opencolleges.edu.au/ blog/2016/11/07/ca-beginners-guide-to-linkedin/
b) Imagine that you are creating an online profile on a professional social networking site, such as LinkedIn. The first person who will see your profile is the person in your social network that you identified above. Write a detailed description of the type of impression you would want to create with your profile.
c) Identify five components of a professional networking profile that others will use to get an impression of who you are.
d) Create a headline for your professional networking profile that targets the job, opportunity, or industry you’re interested in. (See “Headline” section of article above).
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
• Use Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
• Use section headers (Status Set, Roles, Role Conflict, Social Networks, and Positive Impressions) and write left indented paragraphs under each corresponding section.
• References are not required for this assignment as you will use the assigned article and your webtext.
5
• Include a cover page containing the title of the assign- ment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date.
6
