1. Using a theoretical framework from this semester, compare the key
components of the ER systems of Germany and the UK.
• Choose a theoretical framework that was used prominently such as Varieties of Capitalism (VoC). In this example,
define what VoC is and briefly discuss its significance and shortcomings
in the study of employment relations. Identify which country is the CME
and which is the LME and state why.
• Compare and contrast the key components of the ER systems of Germany
and the UK, focusing on employee relations/HR (the nature of employee
participation in the decision making process within enterprises) and
industrial relations (the nature of trade unions and employer
organizations, collective bargaining and pay setting, and employment
security)
• Analyse the key differences and similarities between the two ER regimes
and conclude with what works better and if there is any scope for
improving the two ER regimes based on the analysis you have done on
each country
OR
Convergence and divergence
Look at Marion Festing’s article on whether German HRM is converging
with the US or not.
2. Using examples of MNCs from this semester, explain the relationship
between home country policies and those applied in host foreign
countries.
2
Consider the MNCs used in our case studies and pick a couple which best
illustrate how an MNC’s home country policies can differ (or be similar with)
from those used in foreign countries where they also operate. (GMH as an LME
country of origin moving to CME such as Germany, also US Chrysler and
Italian Fiat; China, WalMart in the USA and China, etc.)
• Explain why you chose a particular MNC by highlighting the stark difference
in how they interact with workers and the state. How are their outcomes
different in these two jurisdictions? How are their ER processes and outcomes
similar or different in these two countries?
3. ILO Conventions and International Framework Agreements (IFAs)
are supposed to protect workers’ rights in countries which sign up to
these. What is the reality underpinning Conventions and IFAs? What
do you recommend should be done to improve worker protections
under Conventions and IFAs given the exploitation of workers in
MNCs supply chains?
Begin your discussion by defining what the ILO and IFAs are. Outline the roles
they play in safeguarding the rights of workers globally
• Recall our discussion in class: Do ILO Conventions and IFAs actually do
their part in protecting workers? What are they doing right? How can they
better ensure that workers’ rights and entitlements are observed?
• Remember that ratifying ILO Conventions are voluntary. What does this
mean for workers in countries which opt/do not opt to become party to
certain international labour instruments? In countries which ratify ILO
Conventions, what can you say about how well their legal regimes carry
out their obligations? Are there any issues on monitoring for compliance
and enforcement? How can these issues be resolved?
3
• Also remember that there are only a handful of IFAs executed between
MNCs and global workers’ organizations, and that their provisions are
observed primarily on a best-effort basis.
4. Choose any two countries covered this semester, including the
presentation/essay country of your choice (but not Germany or the
UK) and explain the national contexts, including the role of the state
(i.e. government), the nature of trade unions across the two nations,
and collective bargaining across the two nations.
When deciding on which two countries to analyse, explain why you chose those
countries and why they are highly relevant in this discussion.
• Be as detailed as possible when explaining the countries’ national
contexts. Focus on the role of the state (labour legislation, labour
institutions and processes that affect employment relations such as the
regulation of unions, the promotion of collective bargaining and the use
of CBAs, availability of dispute resolution mechanisms), the state of trade
unionism (Are they recognised by both the state and employers’
organizations? What can you say about the levels of membership? How is
this impacting the way workers’ rights and entitlements are established
and protected?), and the existence of employers’ organizations (How
would you describe the nature and level of their interactions with trade
unions and the government?). Do the three industrial relations actors
interact well with each other?
• Do the levels of trade union membership in these countries result in an
increase or a decrease in collective bargaining? What is the impact of the
existing collective bargaining agreements on pay and working
conditions?
4
• Compare the two countries and in your conclusion, and make sure that
you support the argument that you set out in the introductory part of your
answer.
5. Should MNCs be forced to comply within minimum labour standards
in all countries in which they operate? Why/why not? Illustrate your
answer with some examples of MNCs studied this semester.
Based on our case studies, we have come to the conclusion that MNCs must be
able to at least comply with the legally established minimum labour standards in
all countries in which they operate. This ensures that they do not end up in
expensive labour conflicts with both workers and the government
• Define what labour standards are and why it is important for governments
to establish their minimum levels them and for employers to observe
these
• Complying with minimum standards ensure that employees legal rights
and entitlements are met. Look into how well Samsung operates in South
Korea and what problems they ran into in China
• You can also incorporate into your discussion the reputational damage
MNCs suffer as a result of their noncompliance with minimum labour
standards in the countries they operate
6. How can MNCs from one type of market economy adapt to operating
in another type of market economy? What does this tell you about
differences between these two types of employment relations
systems?

Assignment 1: Business Process and Functional Modeling-CIS Week 4 Assignment
Assignment 1: Business Process and Functional Modeling
Due Week 4 and worth 110 points
Advanced Business Systems (ABS) is a consulting and staffing company providing specialized staffing and consulting services to clients in a variety of different industries. It has offices in major U.S. metro areas and has ongoing relationships with Fortune 500 companies. Its areas of services range from software development and network engineering to geo-information systems. It has 50 plus regional offices in U.S. and five (5) offices in Canada. It plans to expand to other countries in the future.
When an ABS client company determines that it will need a contractor or temporary professional, it issues a staffing request against the contract it had previously negotiated with ABS. The contract manager in ABS reviews the staff request and ensures that the request is valid with its current contract with its client from the database.
- If the request is not valid, the contract manager sends the staffing request back to the client and explains the reasons and asks for the need for starting a new contract.
- If the request is valid, the contract manager will start recruiting requests by putting the request into its staffing database. The staffing request is then sent to ABS placement department.
In the placement department, the placement specialists will check the job requirements and candidate’s qualifications.
- If there is a qualified candidate, the specialist will notify the candidate and put a note in the database.
- If a qualified candidate cannot be found or not immediately available, the specialist notifies contract managers and the recruiting department; the recruiting department starts searching outside immediately.
The recruiting department normally has 30 days to find an outside candidate and send the qualified candidates to the placement department to review. If an internal qualified candidate is confirmed with his / her availability, the confirmation will be sent to the arrangement department. In the arrangement department, the candidate works with the specialists to further confirm the placement details, such as starting date, location, compensation (e.g., per diem), and travel arrangement. The final confirmation will be sent to the client along with a billing schedule. If the client agrees with the arrangement, he/she acknowledges the arrangement with contract managers in the contract department. The contract manager then puts a memo into its database and closes the request.
Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

How The Federal Government Evolved Since The End Of The Civil War
In Not Less Than A 750 Word Essay (Approximately 3 Double-Spaced Pages), You Must Address Some Aspect Of How The Federal Government Evolved (Since The End Of The Civil War). You Should Focus On A Policy, A Law, Or An Event That Demonstrates Your Knowledge
Professionalism in the workplace
Question 1. We will be engaged in a research project for the rest of this course. Your investment in the outcome of the project often has a good deal of reliance upon the topic about which you choose to write. The more interest you have in your topic, the more you will be driven to learn more about it and to write about it so you want to choose a topic that will hold your interest as you learn about the process of writing a research paper. Use some of the following questions to help shape a reflection about the topic you are considering for your research paper. Think about some of your favorite subjects. What interests you the most? What ideas do you have about a topic? You may want to mention and then briefly explain three ideas that you have, pointing out the topic idea that is most appealing to you. What thoughts do you have about the topic right now (prior to researching it)? What do you expect to find when you research the topic? What do you hope to learn about? What are some of your assumptions right now?
Question 2. How would you describe your personality within a work environment? Also, knowing that not all personalities are compatible, what is something that you could do to proactively attempt to work with a colleague who has a personality that is incompatible with your own?
Question 3. This question involves writing career goals. First, write at least three five-year goals toward your career by using the guidelines within the SMART method. Remember, the SMART method involves making the goal specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and establish a time to achieve it. Second, identify the type of job, the job’s title, the location (i.e., city), and the company. Then, briefly explain why these three goals are important to you.
Question 4. This question involves evaluating how attitude, personality, and goal setting impact work performance. Attitudes can be both good and bad, personalities can vary greatly, and goal setting is a technique that some use and some do not. For this question, write a brief essay that describes how attitude, personality, and goal setting can impact one worker’s performance. Include workplace examples to support your brief essay.
Question 5. This question involves using your critical-thinking skills to describe the impact of time management in the workplace. Managing our time effectively in the workplace is very important. We all have a job to do, and we must be very timely while completing our tasks. Most of the time, we work with others or for clients, and they depend on us to complete the work. And, that is why using time-management techniques is beneficial to us. For this question, write a brief essay that describes what is likely to result from two instances within a workplace: (a) using time-management techniques and (b) not using time-management techniques. Within the brief essay, include workplace examples to support your message.
The subject for question 1 is English and the subject for Question 2-5 is Professionalism in the Workplace

HCA 346- Ambulatory Care
Deciding whether to centralize or decentralize
The new Graystone Memorial Clinic facility houses 50 specialists. The old clinic building was located in a gradually decaying portion of the city, and the group decided to build a new facility to allow for expansion of the staff and to better serve the population, which has shifted away from the original location.
During the course of planning for the project, a number of decisions regarding functions were made. One important decision was to centralize the nursing station on each floor, with approximately twelve physicians housed in each unit and 3-4 in each subspecialty section. This was done in order to increase efficiency. Although the physician’s offices and the exam rooms all had telephones, telephone calls to the floor were to be handled centrally within the nursing section. Other duties of the nursing and office staff were also to be shared. As a patient was brought back from the central reception area with the chart, the chart was to be placed in a pocket outside the patient’s exam-room door, and the flag indicator moved to alert the physician that this was his or her next patient.
The move was completed over a weekend, and the doors of the new facility opened to patients for the first time on the following Monday. Within an hour, utter chaos reigned. The chief of medicine became so upset that he threatened to resign. The problem was that the physicians did not accept the centralization of the nursing staff because they felt they could not operate without having their own personal assistant.
Somehow the clinic floundered through the first week, with growing tension among employees, professional staff, and administrators. The following Monday, a special meeting of the partnership was called to consider the design problems of the new building.
1. Assume that you are the administrator of the Graystone Memorial Clinic. What went wrong, and how would you correct the problem?
