Directions:
You are to write an ethical profile paper that recognizes the formative influence of your family, heroes, and personal style on you as an ethical professional. This paper will provide a profile of you in regards to your ethical and professional practice. You will be required to include information on who you are as an ethical professional, how this course has shaped your unique ethical decision-making style, and the areas in which you feel still need further development.
Include the following four sections in your paper:
Ethical Autobiography: First, explain how you think through and determine what is “right” and “wrong” (personally and professionally) in your own daily life. Second, identify four examples of ethical behaviors and explain how your cultural heritage has shaped your values. Third, describe the nature of the four ethical behaviors you see in yourself.
Professional/Ethical Hero: First, identify an ethical “hero,” an individual that has most impressed you and serves as your role model because of their professional/ethical presence (i.e., sensitivity, appropriate boundaries, and respect for privacy, ethical commitment, and ethical courage). Elaborate on his or her ethical characteristics. Discuss how this person can (or does) serve as a role model for others in the helping profession. Ethical Decision-Making Style: This section will articulate your implicit style in terms of ethical decision making. Although there are specific models that help facilitate ethical decision making, everyone has his or her own unique style. Taking into consideration the ethical decision-making models presented in this course, identify the style that reflects your early and ongoing experiences with moral values and issues that has been influenced and shaped by your parents, relatives, peers, and valued adults in your life, such as a teacher or coach. Use what you have written from your autobiography to supplement this discussion. In summary, explain your implicit ethical decision-making style, including how this course and your cultural heritage have served as influential factors.
Professional and Ethical Development: Ethical development is, for most, a career-long process. In the last section of your paper, please identify at least two areas discussed in this module/course where you feel you would benefit from more development. Lastly, suggest ways in which you can acquire your further development.
Please include information from two or more external scholarly references using APA formatting for all citations.
Your paper should be approximately 6–8 pages in length, be double-spaced, in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal 1” margins; be written in APA style; and be free of typographical and grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page.

The topic that was chosen is • Confucius and Aristotle on Virtue. Write an essay comparing these two (2) ancient thinkers on the concept of virtue or good ethical character and conduct. Stay focused on the issue; keep any biographical or other information short or limited. As much as possible, analyze their writings (in translation, of course), using Confucius’ Analects (at http://classics.mit.edu/Confucius/analects.html ) and Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics (at http://classics.mit.edu/Aristotle/nicomachaen.html ). Your paper should: a) Compare the teachings of Confucius and Aristotle on what constitutes virtue or good ethical character and conduct, noting similarities and differences in specific ideas or emphasis. b) Consider what your findings suggest about differences between ancient Chinese and ancient Greek culture. c) From this comparison, suggest ideas of virtue that can apply to ethics in a modern setting, such as a diverse workplace. For the topic you choose: 1. Establish a clear thesis about your topic as part of the introductory paragraph (often the thesis is the last thing one determines after doing the basic research and outline; however it will be placed in the first paragraph of your paper). 2. This is a comparative essay. Comparison approached properly will require some critical thinking on your part. Use a point-by-point approach for the essay. That means, if comparing subject A with subject B, don’t do the first half of the essay on subject A and then the second half on subject B–that will seem like two (2) separate essays and comparisons will tend to get lost. Instead, you should be mentioning both subjects in most of your paragraphs as you compare them throughout the essay. Comparisons will identify similarities as well as contrasts. 3. Do not try to do everything on your two (2) subjects. You should end up narrowing your focus to a few insights and issues about the subjects being compared. And, from those fairly specific points of comparison, you will develop a thesis and glean some lessons. 4. Follow closely the instructions below for your specific topic. 5. Include a concluding paragraph at the end. This paragraph will, in some way, refer back to the thesis established in your first paragraph, since now you have demonstrated and supported it. It may be here that you also include your observations relating your study to the modern workplace or society (see your topic). Try to finish with flair! 6. Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text. Note: Wikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page. The Project Paper will be graded on: 1. The level to which the instructions were followed for the paper generally and for the specific topic. 2. The establishment of a clear thesis about your topic. 3. The adequacy and relevance of information, examples, and details which support the general thesis. 4. Covering each part of the topic as instructed, including the comparisons, the consideration of ancient cultural differences, and the reflection on lessons for modern society or the modern workplace. 5. The quality of your research and your persuasiveness using critical reasoning. 6. We look at the present through a rear-view mirror. We march backwards into the future. —Marshall McLuhan
Decades before the World Wide Web was available, Marshall McLuhan predicted that the world would become a global village because communication would shift our perceptions of space and distance. McLuhan coined the phrase “the medium is the message.” His assertion was that the way the medium, popular culture, and other content and ideas are disseminated is as important as the content or ideas themselves.
In the past, a sense of community was defined primarily by geography, where people lived, and social issues like race/ethnicity, religious affiliation, and social and economic class. With technological changes, the world is made up of communities of interest that are not necessarily limited by geography. People may participate and consume popular culture in ways not imagined 30, 20, or even five years ago.
This week we look at how popular culture and societal values intersect and how different communities may evangelize specific popular culture elements to change or protect values.
Controversy over Time and Space
Earlier you looked at social issues as expressed by popular culture artifacts in historical context. This week you do the same thing, but by looking at current issues that are being addressed by popular culture. Then you hypothesize about whether the conversations about this issue will provoke or resist change, and how and why this might happen. Imagine that you are a philosopher and you have been asked to predict the future of an issue based on popular culture.
Your main post should be in the thread that corresponds to the issue you have chosen for your final project. Posting in that thread will allow you to continue testing ideas you may want to include in your Final Project. However, you should feel free to respond to colleagues in any thread that interests you. Reading about how others approach their issues and popular culture can inspire new ways to think about your own issue and popular culture elements.
For this Discussion, your Instructor will either assign groups to threads or direct you to choose one thread from the choices listed this week. If you are directed to choose a thread on your own, follow these instructions: Each thread is limited to a maximum number of students based on class size. A thread will close if the limit is reached. If a thread is closed to new posters, select from the open threads.

    1. Compose a first person narrative discussing your personal experience (or lack thereof) with and perspective on religion to this point in your life and reflect on what you expect from this course. Some guiding questions:

    • Would you consider yourself to be a “religious” person? Why or why not?
      • What religion(s) are you personally most familiar with?
      • How is your involvement with religion today different from how it was when you were growing up?
    • What are your hopes and expectations for this course?
    • How might this course challenge you: intellectually, spiritually, academically or otherwise? How do you plan to address those challenges?

    Grading Criteria: 

    • Length: approximately 500 words (grade penalty for every 10% [50 words] below target).
    • Content  should give me a good overview of your experience with and perspective on religion – a good idea of where you are coming from.  Composition  will also count. Do not neglect to also discuss your hopes and expectations for the course.
    • Composition: demonstrate suitable college level writing skills (avoid errors in spelling, word usage, grammar, syntax, etc.)

    This is an exercise in “discovery” intended to expand your “global awareness” of a variety of religions.

    • You will also be introduced to several websites where information about various religions can be found.
    • Information filled in on this worksheet will also help you identify some places you might visit for your field research later in the semester.

Read the course syllabus and skim the topics covered in this course by reading the Table of Contents and all of the material before the first chapter and skimming the rest of the textbook. (Invest roughly two hours on this skimming and reading.)
