In Module 4, you learned about the direct and indirect functions performed by clinical mental health counselors before, during, after, and outside the counseling relationship. You were taught that counseling is a process that occurs in stages. At each stage, clinical mental health counselors engage in a variety of activities that are purposeful and intentional. Some of the activities performed by counselors during those stages include building the relationship and establishing rapport, gathering information, conceptualizing the case, and performing assessment and diagnosis where appropriate, with the end goal and activity being the collaborative development of an appropriate treatment plan. As you think about the counseling process and the role of the clinical mental health counselor, consider the following scenario:

Scenario:

Aalia is a 17-year-old Muslim female from Pakistan. Her family has been in the United States for 7 years. Aalia was referred to a counselor by her family doctor because she has experienced several behavioral changes over the past 2 months. She takes less interest in school and community activities and has started to isolate herself in her room at home. Her siblings describe her as irritable and moody. Aalia has had occasional crying spells over the past month and she reported unexplained weight loss over the past 2 months. She does not have a formal diagnosis. As you plan for your first session with Aalia, think about what you will do.

The discussion of the research being presented is a key element in poster conferences. During professional conferences, poster presenters speak with other psychology professionals providing insights into the information offered within the poster as well as explaining key elements of the research findings. See the PSY699 Poster submission guidelines (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for templates and guidelines to aid in the creation of your poster.  For this week’s discussion, you will be submitting a link to your Pathbrite folder where your colleagues will find your poster presentation along with a brief detailed explanation of the materials included in it. Poster presentations are typically informal affairs with limited time for presenters to provide extra information. In keeping with this, your explanations of the materials will be limited to specific parameters. To explain the research presented in your poster, you will be creating a 3- to 5-minute screencast video. You may use any screencast software to create this video.   1. Consider your own social behavior and the various normative and informational social influences you encounter in everyday life.  Then, complete the following activities.
  2. Appraise your behavior.  For 24 hours, keep a log of every behavior in which you engage that is due to conformity or obedience.
  3. Select one of the following:

    • To what extent is your everyday behavior shaped by social influence?
    • How do people react when you do not conform/obey?  What factors influence people to follow?

(Discussion post 1) Chapters 5 and 6 in your text discuss several iconic experiments in memory that have helped us learn about our memory system. How could you use information from the article to improve cognition in different scenarios and professional settings?
(Discussion post 3) Over the years, psychologists have proposed a number of different theories to describe the interactions between language and other types of cognition. This week’s readings expose you to a number of these theories. Some theories suggest that language shapes the way we think about things.
