American Literature 1865-present informal essay

First, reflect on your prior experience with American literature. You probably remember something about American writers from high school, and you may have taken other college literature studies that included some works of American writers. Perhaps you have read books about American writers or their times. Perhaps you visited historical sites with links to authors, or maybe you have seen movies or television programs based on American writers or their works.
•  Second, consider what led you to select this study and explain what you hope to gain from this course. Will this study become the foundation for further study, or is this the only literature study you plan to take? Are there particular works or writers you hope to learn about during our work this term?
•  Third, because we are looking at a body of work produced by writers of a particular nationality, it would be helpful to try to answer this short, but complex, question: What is an American? (Consider if there are particular characteristics that are American. Is there a stereotypical American? Or are Americans too diverse to define in any helpful way?)

Barnum description and demonstration

Overview
This same Barnum demonstration has been played on introductory psychology students for over 50 years (Forer, 1949), and for some reason, it never ends up in the public conscience, thanks to the systematic misrepresentation of psychology in the popular media. It even works with personnel managers, who should know this effect by training (Stagner, 1958). It is in our textbook by Myers, and it should be described in all other Introductory and Social Psychology books.
The Barnum effect in psychology refers to the trustfulness of people when reading descriptions of themselves. By personality, we mean the ways in which people are different and unique. However, it is possible to give everyone the same description and people nevertheless rate the description as very very accurate.
Instructions
What I want you to do is to find a friend and give the following instructions:
“I am taking a new course in psychology that teaches us how to analyze personality from a picture – can I try it with you:  Please take the following paper and pencil and draw a picture of a house: the picture must include the following items:  a house, windows, door(s), some kind of water, some kind of greenery (plants, trees flowers etc..).  You have five minutes to draw this, then I will take it away and get back to you in a few hours or tomorrow with a personality description”.. Once you get the drawing – take some time to get back to the person and then give them an envelope with a printout of their personality – have them rate on a 1-10 scale of how accurate it is and ask for a one sentence description of their reaction.
Here is an example of such a Barnum description: You may change a few words but not too much as we want to makes sure you are all using similar descriptions so we can compare.

  • You have a big need for other people to like and admire you.
  • You have a great deal of unused potentia, which you have not yet turned to your advantage.
  • You are hard-working and self-controlled outside, but you tend to worry and be  insecure inside.
  • You prefer some change and variety and become unhappy when given restrictions and limitations.
  • You pride yourself as being an independent thinker and do not accept others statements without proof or evidence that it is true.
  • You have seem to be critical of yourself.
  • Sometimes you have doubts about whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing.
  • Sometimes you are extraverted, outgoing and, sociable, sometimes you are introverted, quiet and like to be along.
  • While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally able to overcome them.

On Monday 29th January you need to submit on Blackboard: 1. The drawing. 2. The person’s rating on a 1-10 scale 3. The person’s one-sentence description of their reaction and then you then need to write a 3. One paragraph reflection on the exercise which should include what you thought of it, how is the Barnum Effect the same as other personality tests and should this make us not trust psychology?

Business Ethics Questions

First, watch the Frontline episode, “To Catch a Trader” Then answer the following questions:
1. (a) What is the specific SEC rule related to insider trading, and what specifically does its text prohibit? (b) Using simple and clear language, how would you put this rule into your own words?
2. (a) Which case discussed in the episode was the first time federal agents used a wire tap for an insider trading investigation? (b) According to the following article, what is the major difficulty investigators face today in catching insider trading? (Be specific about the nature of the problem; name-dropping an app isn’t an answer.)
3. (a) What are “expert networks,” and what role or function do they play, specifically in the hedge fund industry? (b) According to James Fleischman of PGR, what is the danger or temptation inherent in what expert networks do, which he wrote was “bound to happen”?
4. Take some time to reflect on the nature of insider trading. In your view, what specifically explains why insider trading is prohibited? Your task for this question is to try to explain as clearly as as possible the deep, moral reason (or reasons) why insider trading is wrong, and NOT merely to restate facts about it. (For example, adultery isn’t plausibly wrong simply because it involves sexual activity; but it might be wrong because it causes someone else distress, or because it breaks a promise you made, or because it shows disrespect, or for all of those reasons, or for some other reason(s) entirely.) Be sure to give an answer that is faithful to your own perspective; do not simply repeat what someone else (whether a religious leader, a utilitarian, your parents, or anyone else) would say unless you personally agree with it. (Also, if you do not believe insider trading is wrong, you may also choose to explain why it is not morally wrong.) NOTE: Extremely brief or superficial answers to this question (e.g., ‘because it’s illegal’) will not receive credit.
