Quantitative and Qualitative Research in Clinical Settings

Some people consider the difference between the terms “quantitative” and “qualitative” to be similar to the difference between facts and feelings. These individuals might argue that quantitative approaches are better or more appropriate than qualitative approaches, particularly in health care. They might support this argument by saying that quantitative approaches are based on numbers and concrete evidence rather than on subjective observations and opinions.
Based on the information presented in this week’s Learning Resources and Media, do you think this an accurate way of distinguishing quantitative and qualitative methods of research? Is one method inherently superior to the other? How would you describe the difference between quantitative and qualitative research to someone who was completely unfamiliar with these concepts?
This Discussion explores the characteristics of quantitative and qualitative research methods as well as the application of each in the practice setting. You examine the suitability of each method to evidence-based practice. You are encouraged to make connections between general characteristics and abstract research concepts to realistic scenarios and actual experiences in your responses to this week’s Discussion prompts.

To prepare:

  • Review Dr. Shi’s comparison of the characteristics of quantitative and qualitative research presented in this week’s media presentation and in the “Overview of Qualitative Research Methods” tutorial.
  • Reflect on the Learning Resources focusing on the use of quantitative and qualitative research in health care.
  • With the two articles you reviewed in mind (one quantitative and one qualitative), think about how those types of research projects influence, or support, evidence-based nursing practice. Ask yourself: Which methodology is most appropriate for supporting evidence-based practice? What characteristics of that methodology support my conclusion? SEE ATTACHED FILES FOR ARTICLES

By Tomorrow 08/29/17, write a minimum of 550 words in APA format with a minimum of 3 references from the list below which include the level one headings as numbered below:
post a cohesive response that addresses the following:
1)     Analyze how quantitative and qualitative research projects can be applied to evidence-based nursing practice. (SEE ATTACHED FILES FOR ARTICLES)
2)     What characteristics of quantitative or qualitative research make it the most appropriate for addressing evidence-based practice problems? Support your position.

Physician Issues

You are the CEO of Acme Hospital, a small rural facility. On your staff, there is a physician (OB-GYN), Dr. Thomas Cole, with whom you have been having some problems. Dr. Cole:

  • does not finish his morning rounds on a regular basis
  • does not attend medical staff meetings
  • often very late in arriving to deliver babies
  • most of the time, the nurses on duty in the delivery room deliver the majority of Dr. Cole’s babies

You know that these issues must be addressed but there are other connecting problems.

  • First, Dr. Cole is the son of Dr. Frederick Cole who just retired after 55 years of service with Acme Hospital.
  • “Dr. Fred” was much beloved among hospital staff and before he left, he used his charm and status to make certain staff members (you were not one) promise to help and to protect his son, the younger Cole.

You know that when you begin raising these issues there will likely be resistance to take any action.
Please discuss the following:

  1. What are the possible liability issues that the younger Dr. Cole is exposing the facility to?
  2. How would you manage the staff that promised to help the younger Dr. Cole?
  3. Would you approach the elder Dr. Cole? Why or why not?
  4. Is this a problem that can be “fixed”? If so, how can it be fixed? Are you willing to give the younger Dr. Cole the time to “fix” the issues as the CEO?

Using Mills’ definition, I would say that sociological imagination applies to my life in various ways. For example, I use to live in Bakersfield, California where it was very rare to see people doing outdoor activities like walking, biking and running. As I moved to Santa Monica, I was more exposed to seeing people running and doing activities at the beach. I am now starting to participate in more outdoor activities such as acroyoga and walking around my community for fun, but I haven’t stopped there. With my current habit of taking the bus to school or driving, I have changed my habits to either walking or biking to school. I am hoping that my simple acts of exercise will influence others to do the same and even add daily activities to their lifestyle like going for a ten minute walk.
One point of intersection between my personal biography and a social/historical event was when I had visited the Philippines for the first time. Over the summer, I had visited a place called Bohol, Philippines and I was puzzled as to why there was a lack of hot water and electricity at my hotel. Finally, I had remembered that there was a 7.2 earthquake in Bohol in 2013 which compromised most of their necessities. Remembering that historical event allowed me to become more understanding and considerate for the people of Bohol.

Major League Baseball players' association

Case Study Several years ago, the Major League Baseball players’ association went on strike in September, just before the World Series started. The players’ contracts expired at the beginning of the season (May), but they held off the strike until September when they would lose only one-sixth of their salaries. In contrast, a September strike would hurt the owners financially because they earn a larger portion of their revenue during the playoffs. As one player explained: “If we strike next spring, there’s nothing stopping [the club owners] from letting us go until next June or July because they don’t have that much at stake.” Use your knowledge of the sources and contingencies of power to explain why the MLB baseball players’ association had more power in negotiations by walking out in September rather than March. Cite the text to support your ideas in an essay with a minimum of 300 words in APA format. Information about accessing the Blackboard Grading Rubric for this assignment is provided below
