In this assignment, you will explore your own cultural and ethnic background and analyze how this background may affect your communication. A great deal of a message is communicated not through spoken words but through the nonverbal channels. Culture and personal experience can play a large role in the transmission and interpretation of nonverbal messages. You will reflect upon your personal experience from the viewpoint of your cultural and ethnic affiliation(s) and compare it with the scholarly literature relevant to your cultural and ethnic background.

Tasks:

Watch the video, Empathy Training for Ethnic and Cultural Awareness. Afterwards, identify your cultural and ethnic background. In your response, answer the following questions:

  • In what ways do you feel your culture affects the way you communicate? (For example, eye contact or the lack of eye contact has a cultural component and can be interpreted as defiance or something similar by those unaware of the cultural context.)
  • Provide an example of how your culture has influenced nonverbal communication.
  • Discuss how nonverbal communication could influence whether or not a message is perceived accurately.
  • How is someone from a different cultural background likely to perceive your message?

Communication Analysis Paper

Performance reviews can be a difficult experience for anyone to go through. In this assignment, you will recall a performance review or a performance-related discussion that you experienced at work. You will critically analyze that experience, focusing on the verbal communication, effective listening, and conflict resolution aspects of the experience.

Tasks:

For this assignment, you are to reflect on a time when you had a performance review or any sort of work-related performance discussion with your manager. Then, write a 5- to 6-page paper addressing the following items:

  1. Describe your experience regarding the performance discussion.
  2. Explain proven and effective ways to listen appropriately, resolve conflict, and negotiate. Support your response with sources from professional literature. Professional literature may include the Argosy University online library resources, relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, or .gov).   3. Assess yourself on your effectiveness.

  • Teaming with a classmate or mentor to help guide improvement
  • Creating a focus for improvement and an attainable goal
  • Identifying how the goal will be measured for success

Flip through the channels on a television set or walk into any bookstore in the United States, and you are likely to encounter various self-help reality shows or books offering insights into how you can help yourself with mental health issues.
For this discussion, pick one self-help television show or book to evaluate (Dr. Phil, Hoarders, Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Managing Your Moods, Learn How to Boost Your Self Esteem, etc.). Identify your selection and provide enough information on the topic of the show or book to create adequate context. Analyze the validity, reliability, benefits, and value of the popular resource based on your reading and study of the science of psychology across the course. Describe the presentation of the content within the book or television show in terms of the role of authority the author or host takes. (Is the presentation informational or authoritative?) Explain any theoretical foundations or shortcomings found in the material. Evaluate the ability of the book or show to apply the methods within the presented material to the target population. Describe any efforts on the part of the author(s) or host(s) to apply ethical principles and professional standards of psychology in the delivery of the content. There is often a wide discrepancy between content presented in the mainstream media and that which is presented in the scientific literature. In this discussion, you will choose one contemporary psychological issue that is prevalent today (depression, body image, bullying, media influences, self-esteem, etc.). Research your selected topic in a popular publication (Psychology Today, Newsweek, New York Times, etc.). Then, using the Ashford University Library, locate a peer-reviewed journal article on the same topic. In your initial post, briefly identify your topic and provide enough detail for an adequate understanding. Compare and contrast the information presented by detailing commonalities and differences that exist in the two sources. Assess the contributions of the peer-reviewed source to the topic and identify any missing element in the popular source. Evaluate how adequately the popular article addresses the major components of the selected contemporary topic in psychology for a general population.

Leadership

Leadership is a complex process that requires leaders to critically appraise the circumstances in which they find themselves to best determine how to lead and influence those around them. There are multiple tactics a leader can employ in any given circumstance to influence a situation or their followers. Compare two leaders you have dealt with in the past. What different tactics did these leaders employ to influence situations or people? Which tactics were successful? Which tactics were not successful? As a leader, how can you critically appraise situations to make sure you select appropriate tactics for influencing a given situation?

Write a five to ten (5-10) page design document in which you:
a. Create a database schema that supports the company’s business and processes.

i. Create at least two (2) sample queries that will support the organizational reporting needs.
