Research assignment

Prepare: The topic of your essay needs to be a global societal problem from the following list: adult illiteracy, funding for General Education vs STEM in primary and secondary schools, minimum wage, oceans desertification, overcoming the digital divide, refugee (escaping persecution, war, or death) crises, species extinctions (modern), tax havens, Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), universal statement of human rights (pick one), airport security, or wealth disparity. Review this GEN499 Sample Final Paper Guide for additional guidance on the expectations of this assignment.
Reflect: Based on the topic that you have chosen, you will need to use critical thinking skills to thoroughly understand how this topic can be a global societal problem and determine some logical solution(s) to the problem.
Write: This Final Argumentative Essay will present research relating the critical thinker to the modern, globalized world. In this assignment, you need to address the following items in separate sections with new headings for each:

  • Identify the global societal problem within the introductory paragraph and conclude with a thesis statement that states your proposed solution(s) to the problem. For guidance on how to construct a good introduction paragraph, please review the Introduction Paragraph Guideline (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. from the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site..
  • Describe background information on how that problem developed or came into existence. Show why this is a societal problem, and provide perspectives from multiple disciplines or populations so that you fully represent what different parts of society have to say about this issue.
  • Construct an argument supporting your proposed solution(s). Be sure to consider multiple disciplines or populations so that your solution shows that multiple parts of society will benefit from this solution. Provide evidence from multiple scholarly sources as evidence that your proposed solution is viable.
  • Interpret statistical data from at least three, peer-reviewed scholarly sources. Do this by discussing the validity, reliability, and any biases; identifying the strengths and weaknesses of these sources; and pointing out limitations of current research and attempting to indicate areas for future research. You may even use visual representations such as graphs or charts to explain statistics from sources. Evaluate the ethical outcomes that result from your solution. Be sure to provide at least one positive ethical outcome as well as at least one negative ethical outcome that could result from your solution, and explain at least two ethical issues related to each of those outcomes. It’s important to consider all of society.
  • Develop a conclusion as the last paragraph(s) of the essay, starting with rephrasing your thesis statement and then presenting the major points of the topic and how they support your argument. The Final Argumentative Essay

Ecosystems Biodiversity

Media
Should we mount a massive effort to restore ecosystems that we have degraded even though this will be quite costly? For this weeks environmental controversy we explore this question. Using the textbook, and any additional outside resources, answer the questions below. Write a 1-2 paragraph response to the questions posed to you. Remember to cite your sources using APA.
Ecological restoration, which is discussed in your textbook, has a critical role in protecting and understanding the Earth’s environments. Unfortunately, even if personnel and financial resources are available, many sites are too damaged to be effectively restored. In such cases, alternatives to restoration must be pursued, including: rehabilitation, remediation, replacement, or the creation of artificial ecosystems.
Some individuals worry that large-scale ecological restoration could mislead the public into believing that any amount of environmental damage can be undone. Ultimately, a massive and expensive restoration program could be offset by weakened regulations and increased environmental damage in other areas. Furthermore, alternatives to ecological restoration may be able to repair more sites at less cost.
Based on what you have read and researched, do you believe that the loss of biodiversity is a concern for humans? Should the government not only preserve but restore ecosystems that we have degraded the biodiversity even though this will be quite costly?

Landfill, Contaminated Soil, and Contaminated Water

Scenario:
Once causation has been determined, epidemiological principles can be used to lessen risk by considering the policies that lead to unnecessary exposures.

Centervale’s landfill facility has accepted, with the town’s approval, contaminated soil from the Middle Earth Energy Corporation. The landfill is located above ground and the operators plan on selling the soil to small farms in the county.
The soil is known to be contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and lead that exceed the limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In the past, the EPA has discovered several leaks in the landfill’s liner.
The landfill is located above the town’s main aquifer, which supplies well water to 10,000 residents who live in either Simon Township (ST) or Diamond Township (DT). In Taylor Township (TT), 750 residents use both well water and Metropolis water for small farms. The other residents only use well water.

Directions
Research the public health implications of water contamination. Use information from the EPA, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and National Institutes of Health (NIH). Respond to the following:

  1. Identify and define all exposure and health risks from PCBs and lead.
  2. Develop a dose-response assessment curve for adults and children for PCBs and lead.
  3. 3. Calculate the proportion of people in Centervale who are exposed to well water (i.e., water from the aquifer) and Metropolis water. Show your work.

You should utilize at least 2 scholarly sources beyond the course readings in your research. Your paper should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Write a 4–page report in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Project: Scholar-Practitioner Project: Public Health Leadership Theory

The Assignment (9–12 pages):
Section 1 — Abstract and Introduction (1–2 pages)
Section 2 — Revised Literature Review and Problem Statement (5–7 pages):
Literature Review to include:
A synthesis of the literature of 15–20 peer reviewed, scholarly resources
A description of theoretical gaps in the research
Problem Statement to include:
An explanation of the specific problem that addresses identified gaps within the literature
An explanation of how your problem statement incorporates implications for positive social change.
Section 3 — Personal Public Health Leadership Theory (2–3 pages):
An articulation of your personal Public Health Leadership Theory
Section 4 — Revised Visual Representation of Your Public Health Leadership Theory (3–4 pages):
Your visual representation should include:
Your personal Public Health Leadership Theory to address the gaps identified in the literature
A visual representation of the theory (e.g. table, graph, matrix)
A explanation on how the theory addresses the literature gap identified in Week 5
A description of how your theory incorporates aspects of systems thinking
Section 5 — Empirical Evaluation Plan for a Public Health Leadership Theory (3–4 pages):
You will assess if the newly developed leadership theory addresses the problem you have been working on. What methodological steps will you use? How will you collect data? Suggestion – start with how theories in our text are evaluated. It does not have to be detailed, but it must include the methods, measures and analytic techniques.
If the assignments are done correctly, there should be an alignment from the topic of choice to the evaluation:
The topic is researched in the literature
The literature review points out a theoretical gap that needs to be addressed by leadership
The gap is turned into a problem statement
A leadership theory to address the problem proposed
The theory is depicted in a visual; and finally
An evaluation plan describes how the newly developed theory resolves the problem identified in the literature

Section 6 — Conclusion (1–2 pages)
Section 7 — References
An APA-formatted reference list of 15–20 peer-reviewed, scholarly journals
