The essay must be 1000+ words. Shorter essays will lose points. Be sure to use textual references to back up your ideas and to use MLA 8 format to cite those textual references in in-text citations and a Works Cited page. Failure to do this will result in a lower grade or a possible plagiarism charge. The assignment requires the use of at least two sources outside our text. It is your responsibility to find the sources. If you are having problems, contact the librarian for help. Topic choices: In his article, “Against School,” John Taylor Gatto quotes Woodrow Wilson (28th president of the United States) who, in 1909, said, “We want one class of persons to have a liberal education, and we want another class of persons, a very much larger class, of necessity, in every society, to forgo the privileges of a liberal education and fit themselves to perform specific difficult manual tasks.” While this statement seems outwardly shocking, there is evidence that this very thing is going on today. Taking Gatto’s article as a starting point, develop an argument that this, indeed, is happening in classrooms all over America in the present day. You must include at least one other essay from our text in your discussion. Two outside sources, minimum, should also be used to create your argument. Alfie Kohn, author of “From Degrading to De-grading,” discusses the pros of eliminating our current grading system. He argues grading actually makes students dumber because it decreases individual inquiry and stresses rote learning. How does this essay relate to Brigid Schulte’s “The Case of the Purloined Paper”? Is plagiarism directly caused by our grading system? Argue for or against this idea using these two articles and at least two outside sources as the basis of your paper. Kristina Rizga, in her article “Everything You’ve Heard About Failing Schools is Wrong” takes a long hard look at how we assess schools in America today. The topic is touched upon in some of the other essays we read for this unit, although perhaps not directly. Choose one or more of those readings, along with Rizga’s, and create a paper that addresses the problems that exist with assessing learning in America today. |

Handbook
In an organization, there are many employment policies in the company handbook. This handbook is given to employees at the start of the employer-employee relationship, and although generally not construed as a binding contract against the company in a later lawsuit over the policies, it governs the expectations of employees at the workplace. This Mini Project will have you analyze a company handbook as it relates to the company’s disability policy(ies) and provide a written report of your findings. The report should be at least two pages in length. Please cite your reference using APA format. Review the employee handbook at your place of employment. If you are unemployed, you can review the handbook you might have handy from a previous employer, or ask to look at one from your spouse, other family member, or friend. In your response, discuss what the handbook says about how the company deals with disability issues and accommodating employees with disabilities. Explain what, if any, steps the company provides for an employee to present a request for accommodation. Use specific examples within the contract to support your answer. Do the company policies articulate a difference in how the company treats workplace injuries as opposed to other disabling injuries (such as non-work related injuries or congenital or innate disabling issues)? If so, how? If no, do you think it is effective and/or wise not to include a written distinction? Is the policy fair? If yes, why? If no, what could the company do to improve the policy? Think about the term “fair” from both an employer and an employee perspective.
