Scenario A: Marriage
Scenario A: Marriage
Two friends, Taylor and Alex, are enjoying dessert after a show at the local arts theater. Taylor draws your attention to a very cozy couple at a table in the corner. I wonder what show they watched, Taylor says with a smirk. You gasp and report that you know the woman (she is your neighbor), but the man is not her husband. Maybe they’re in an open relationship, Taylor remarks nonchalantly.
Compose your initial post as if you are Taylor. In your initial post, be sure to do the following:

  • Explain how marriage is an expression of cultural norms and values.
  • Describe at least two different forms of marriage.
  • Apply the principles of cultural relativism.

Assignment 1: Discussion—Web Sites Analyses
Over the past few modules, you have refined your critical reading and evaluation skills. In this assignment, you will apply those skills to analyze a list of Web sites. You will then need to identify parodies or hoax Web sites.
Remember that there are two types of analysis:
* Context Analysis: This is the analysis of the Web site. Examine the authors, dates, references, layout, etc. Look at the Web site address and domain. It will help you identify the strengths and weaknesses. Check if the Web site is an .edu or a .com. An “.edu” Web site is a top-level domain for education, and as of 2001, registrants to the .edu domain are required to be United States affiliated institutions of higher education. In contrast, a “.com” Web site is a top-level domain for commerce.
* Content Analysis: This is the analysis of the information on the Web site. Examine the bibliography, structure of argument, and frequent fallacies (i.e., appeal to ignorance, appeal to emotions, etc.). Look at the material to determine what is really being discussed. Use your critical reading skills here to analyze the quality of a Web site based on its structure, tone, and references.
Review the following list of Web sites, and identify which of them are legitimate and which are not. Complete the following tasks:
* Select one Web site from the following list:
* Dihydrogen Monoxide Research Division. (2012, September 7). http://www.dhmo.org/
* Sims, P. (2009, July 4). Blind man sees wife for first time after having a TOOTH implanted into his eye. Mail Online. Retrieved from http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1197256/Blind-man-sees-wife-time-having-TOOTH-implanted-eye.html
* Slobogin, K. (2002, June 15). Liberated seahorse dads carry the babies. CNN.com. Retrieved from http://edition.cnn.com/2002/HEALTH/parenting/06/14/seahorse.dads/index.html
* Evaluate both the context and the content of the selected Web site.
Based on your analysis, respond to the following:
* What are the strengths and weaknesses of the argument presented in the Web site?
* What is the argument all about?
Write your initial response in about 100–150 words. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Quote or paraphrase at least two outside sources in your answer.
Note that your response to this assignment will also be submitted as a piece of writing for M5: Assignment 2 for a review of your writing skills. Therefore, make sure your response to this assignment is logical, clear, and well organized. Also, proofread your response for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
By Saturday, September 30, 2017, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, October 4, 2017, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.

Instructions: Please carefully read the following assignment details in its entirety. There are many components to this particular assignment, and each component is graded.
Â
This essay should be between 900 and 1000 words, excluding the required annotated bibliography.
First, you will choose a topic of interest that has at least two opposing sides (please do not reuse your Toulmin essay topic). Then, you need to research that topic in order to specify the topic’s scope, so it can be easily discussed in 1000 word essay. Note: Consider your audience as laymen in the field who have only general knowledge of your topic.Â
This essay must include a minimum of five sources.  Three should be peer-reviewed sources, preferably from the APUS databases.  From the library welcome page, click on Advanced Search at the bottom of the page and then check the “peer reviewed” sources box filter. The following should clarify the term “peer-reviewed”:  http://youtu.be/rOCQZ7QnoN0. You may use eBooks; however, as discussed in your textbook, books generally are not as current as peer-reviewed articles.  You may also use primary sources (interviews, statistics, etc); however, these primary sources should be obtained from experts within that field.  If you cannot find strong sources for your chosen topic, then change your topic. If you have a question about the validity of a source, please contact a librarian: librarian@apus.edu
Make sure to include the following sections in your essay:
an introduction and claim,
background,
body,
and a conclusion.
Within the body of your essay, make sure to include the following in any order:
The background for your chosen topic,
the opposition – use an academic tone, and do not show bias,
the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents’ claims,
scholarly research,
your claim — use an academic tone, and do not show bias,
discuss the warrants for your claim and the opposition in order to find the common ground,
and show the common ground between your opponents’ claim and your claim.
After you have written your essay, please make sure to revise the content of your essay. Lastly, be sure to edit your essay by checking grammar, format, and smaller technical details. Please make sure your essay is written in third person.
The Annotated Bibliography
An annotated Bibliography (AB) is due with your Rogerian essay. Using the MLA guide, list each source as it will appear on the Works Cited page of your essay. Summarize each source in two or three grammatically-correct  sentences. These short summaries are the “annotations.”  The following is a sample of an “annotated bibliography.”
Annotated Bibliography (Centered)
Clark, Irene L. The Genre of Argument. Fort Worth, TX: Harcourt Brace, 1998. Print.
Clark’s textbook identifies the major steps to developing a well-researched and well-written argumentative essay. Professional essays are included in the text as models.
Ward, Russ. Logical Argument in the Research Paper. Fort Worth, TX: Harcourt Brace, 1997. Print.
Augmenting the steps to writing an argumentative research paper is information about proper documentation. The Rogerian System, an important aspect of a well-planned paper, should be studied carefully. Submission Instructions: Please submit this through the assignments link in the classroom. This assignment is due on Sunday, by 11:55 p.m., ET.
