UNIT SIX INTRODUCTION
It is more than a cliché that the Lee campus is a global village. On our campus today you will encounter several Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic students from various parts of the world. They study with us, eat with us, socialize with us, share our homes and dorms, and they also worship with us in chapel three times a week. On-campus students have the distinct privilege of interacting with these students from other religious traditions and to encounter refreshing conversations on the subject of religion, among other important things. It will be helpful if you seek out a practicing Buddhist as you begin to study Buddhism. Your understanding and appreciation will be greatly enhanced.
The story of Buddhism begins with a prince who lives in a palace with his father, the king, his wife and his son. He has everything and decides to give it all away. The prince’s name is Siddhartha Gautama who lived in the 6th century BCE. Your reading will apprise you of the life and time of the Buddha, the new religion he instituted called Buddhism (out of Hinduism), and the beliefs and practices of Buddhism. Case Study: How Should Baby Anand be Buried?
Prepared by Edley J Moodley, PhD.
The city of Durban on the east coast of South Africa is both culturally and religiously
diverse, a cosmopolitan city indeed. Hindus, Christians, Muslims and people of other
minority faiths live side by side in this multicultural city.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie and Mary Naidoo were members of my congregation. They had
converted to Christianity. However, most of their extended families were still staunch
Hindus. One night I received a phone call from Ronnie informing me that his niece
Sharon and her husband Bala had lost their only son, 18 month old Anand who died of
Leukemia. Bala converted to Christianity when he met Sharon. However, Bala’s parents
were not happy with his conversion and their relationship was strained, yet Bala still
maintained contact with his parents and siblings. Sharon and Bala were not regular
church goers and consequently did not have a church home. Ronnie asked me if I would
conduct the funeral service for baby Anand and administer the burial rites. I consented to
Ronnie’s request not foreseeing the complications, acrimony and mayhem my decision
would create.
On the day of the funeral, I arrived at the home of Bala and Sharon only to find that the
majority of people, relatives, friends and neighbors who came to lend support to the
grieving family were Hindus. After offering my condolences to the parents of baby
Anand, Bala called me aside to inform me that my presence and planned participation at
the funeral service had caused division and consternation between Bala and Sharon’s
family members.
Bala’s mother, a devout Hindu priestess, objected to my conducting the funeral service
and more so administering the burial rites. The few Christian relatives from Sharon’s side
of the family insisted that I should conduct the funeral service while the majority of
Bala’s family members insisted that a Hindu priest who was present should conduct the
service and administer the burial rites.
What was I to do? Should I respectfully ask Ronnie and his wife to relieve me of the
assignment so as to restore dignity to the funeral or should I insist that I be allowed to
conduct the service without any interruption?
My dilemma was partly resolved when Bala came to me and asked me if I would be
willing to allow the Hindu priest to participate in the funeral service and possibly share in
administering the burial rites? Bala’s mother was adamant that baby Anand receive
Hindu burial rites. By this time all extended family members had gathered around us,
waiting for my decision. After what seemed an eternity I finally offered my answer. I
said to Bala and Sharon I will be happy to…
