An argumentative synthesis can be understood as an explanatory synthesis (Paper I) that also:  Provides a source you yourself locate using the Helena College Library databases  Articulates your own opinion about the subject discussed To write Paper II, choose one of the articles we read from CHAPTER FOUR—Money and Success. Those articles are: -“Sam Walton / Jay Z” by Packer -“Serving in Florida” by Ehrenreich -“From Beyond Outrage” by Reich -“From a Tangle of Pathology to a Race-Fair America” by Aja, et al. Once you’ve chosen your article, you then want to go online to the Helena College Library website and begin searching for a second article that you believe “speaks” to the first. As with Paper I, you’re looking for an article that (a) reinforces the other article’s perspectives/points, (b) disputes the other article’s perspectives/points or (c) does both. To conduct this search, you want to use one of the databases the library provides. You can use any database you wish, but I recommend starting with Ebsco (http://web.b.ebscohost.com.hctproxy.lib.umt.edu:7048/ehost/search/advanced?vid=1&sid=bee76427-be35-4861-a0af-e790f37e8493%40sessionmgr103). Finally, when searching for an article make sure it is both credible (published by a respected scholar, writer or journalist) and current (nothing older than 2005). Once you’ve obtained this article, you then want to reflect about the issues brought up in the two articles (the one you found and the one from Chapter Four) and decide what you personally would like to add to the discussion. This will enter the paper as your own argument. You can either (a) agree with a point one or both of the articles make and develop it further, (b) dispute a point one or both of the articles make and explain why you disagree with it or (c) introduce and support a new point about the subject. What follows is a suggested outline for your paper: I. Introduction (1 paragraph) a. Contextualize the topic. b. Explain what about the topic is interesting or controversial. c. Introduce the two authors, their two articles, and explain what those articles are about or argue. d. Articulate your own position. e. Articulate what points from the preceding four paragraphs you agree with or disagree with (and why), or else branch out and make a new point, or points, of your own. V. Conclusion (1 paragraph) a.
