Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.
Corporations have a lot of influence over the economy, the community, and people. The traditional view of corporate responsibility is that a corporation has no additional social responsibility beyond making a profit for its shareholders. In more recent years, arguments have arisen with the belief that corporations have a high degree of social responsibility to people who are affected by the corporation’s decisions.
Case Example: Phishy Pharmaceuticals is a corporation that recently kicked off the sale of its new weight-loss pill, Lose It Fast. After 3 months of sales, the management team has received some troubling reports of some unanticipated side effects caused by the pill. The management team asks the accounting department to run some numbers to determine how much it would cost to recall Lose It Fast, to suspend manufacturing, and to conduct more tests to determine the pill’s safety and other possible side effects.
After running some numbers, the accounting department states that it would be more cost-effective to leave the product on the market shelves and propose settlement proceedings with anyone who is injured and initiates a lawsuit.
The corporate attorney has advised that the product’s packaging states that the pill is not FDA-approved, and says off the record that everyone who buys a weight-loss product knows there are some risks involved, so it is likely that the majority of injured consumers will not initiate a lawsuit.
If you recall the product, it will result in a delay of dividends paid to shareholders, a loss in revenue affecting shareholder profit, and possibly your job as CEO.
FOR argument: Would you be for leaving the product on the shelf because you feel your duty as a corporate manager is to maximize shareholder profits? If so, under what corporate social responsibility theory would you be operating?
AGAINST argument: Would you be against leaving the product on the shelf and recall the product because you feel the corporation owes a duty to the public, consumers, and the government in terms of social responsibility? If so, under what corporate social responsibility theory would you be operating?

Response Paper Instructions
Having completed the unit of philosophy of religion, you are now ready to respond to an article written by an actual atheist. This article titled “On Being an Atheist,” was written by H. J. McCloskey in 1968 for the journal Question. McCloskey is an Australian philosopher who wrote a number of atheistic works in the 1960s and 70s including the book God and Evil(Nijhoff, 1974). In this article, McCloskey is both critical of the classical arguments for God’s existence and offers the problem of evil as a reason why one should not believe in God. Please note the following parameters for this paper:
1. Your assignment is to read McCloskey’s short article found in the Reading & Study folder in Module/Week 7 and respond to each of the questions below. Your instructor is looking for a detailed response to each question.
2. The response paper is to be a minimum of 1,500 words (not including quotes) and must be written as a single essay and not just a list of answers to questions.
3. The basis for your answers must primarily come from the resources provided in the lessons covering the philosophy of religion unit of the course (Evans and Manis, Craig, and the presentation) and these sources must be mentioned in your paper. You are not merely to quote these sources as an answer to the question—answer them in your own words.
4. You may use other outside sources as well, as long as you properly document them. However, outside sources are not necessary. Each of the questions can be answered from the sources provided in the lessons.
5. While the use of the Bible is not restricted, its use is not necessary and is discouraged unless you intend to explain the context of the passage and how that context applies to the issue at hand in accordance with the guidelines provided earlier in the course. You are not to merely quote scripture passages as answers to the questions. Remember this is a philosophical essay not a biblical or theological essay.
6. While you may quote from sources, all quotations must be properly cited and quotes from sources will not count towards the 1,500 word count of the paper.
7. You may be critical of McCloskey, but must remain respectful. Any disparaging comment(s) about McCloskey will result in a significant reduction in grade.
8. Please note that this paper will be submitted through SafeAssign, which is a plagiarism detection program. The program is a database of previously submitted papers including copies of papers that have been located on the Internet. Once submitted, your paper will become part of the database as well. The program detects not only exact wording but similar wording. This means that if you plagiarize, it is very likely that it will be discovered. Plagiarism will result in a 0 for the paper and the likelihood of you being dropped from the course.
Specifically, you must address the following questions in your paper:
1. McCloskey refers to the arguments as “proofs” and often implies that they can’t definitively establish the case for God, so therefore they should be abandoned. What would you say about this in light of Foreman’s comments in his “Approaching the Question of God’s Existence” presentation?
2. On the Cosmological Argument:
a. McCloskey claims that the “mere existence of the world constitutes no reason for believing in such a being [i.e., a necessarily existing being].” Using Evans and Manis’ discussion of the non-temporal form of the argument (on pp. 69–77), explain why the cause of the universe must be necessary (and therefore uncaused).
b. McCloskey also claims that the cosmological argument “does not entitle us to postulate an all-powerful, all-perfect, uncaused cause.” In light of Evans and Manis’ final paragraph on the cosmological argument (p. 77), how might you respond to McCloskey?
3. On the Teleological Argument:
a. McCloskey claims that “to get the proof going, genuine indisputable examples of design and purpose are needed.” Discuss this standard of “indisputability” which he calls a “very conclusive objection.” Is it reasonable?
b. From your reading in Evans and Manis, can you offer an example of design that, while not necessarily “indisputable,” you believe provides strong evidence of a designer of the universe?
c. McCloskey implies that evolution has displaced the need for a designer. Assuming evolution is true, for argument’s sake, how would you respond to McCloskey (see Evans and Manis pp. 82–83)?
d. McCloskey claims that the presence of imperfection and evil in the world argues against “the perfection of the divine design or divine purpose in the world.” Remembering Evans’ comments about the limitations of the conclusion of the cosmological argument, how might you respond to McCloskey’s charge about the teleological argument?
4. On the Problem of Evil:
a. McCloskey’s main objection to theism is the presence of evil in the world and he raises it several times: “No being who was perfect could have created a world in which there was avoidable suffering or in which his creatures would (and in fact could have been created so as not to) engage in morally evil acts, acts which very often result in injury to innocent persons.” The language of this claim seems to imply that it is an example of the logical form of the problem. Given this implication and using Evans and Manis’ discussion of the logical problem (pp. 159–168, noting especially his concluding paragraphs to this section), how might you respond to McCloskey?
b. McCloskey specifically discusses the free will argument, asking “might not God have very easily so have arranged the world and biased man to virtue that men always freely chose what is right?” From what you have already learned about free will in the course, and what Evans and Manis says about the free will theodicy, especially the section on Mackie and Plantinga’s response (pp. 163–166) and what he says about the evidential problem (pp. 168–172), how would you respond to McCloskey’s question?
5. On Atheism as Comforting:
a. In the final pages of McCloskey’s article, he claims that atheism is more comforting than theism. Using the argument presented by William Lane Craig in the article “The Absurdity of Life without God,” (located in Reading & Study for Module/Week 6), respond to McCloskey’s claim.

1.Cancer is the word no one wants to ever hear. When it strikes a family friend or colleague, it hits home making it even more upsetting. The American Cancer Society(ACS) provides information, education and support to the patient with cancer as well as to family and friends through on-line information and on-line resources that connect them with the local and individualized care that is needed. Because the diagnose can be overwhelming at first, I would recommend the cancer patient and their family to focus on understanding the diagnoses as well as using the finding and paying for treatment tabs found on the ACS website. Knowledge is power, and the patient needs to be armed with information to best understand what the physicians and specialists are talking about. Understanding cancer terminology, and different treatments will help the cancer patient to better make important medical decisions. At the same time, I believe it is important for the cancer patient and family to use the link for finding and paying for treatment. The cancer diagnosis can cause panic that leads to the patient making medical decisions that could cause medical bills that far exceed their financial capabilities. It is important to get information up-front from the insurance company and learn how to handle expenses that may not be covered. Besides all of the on-line information, I would recommend the cancer patient check-out the Lodge Service. Qualifying to stay free in a Lodge near the treatment with support from staff can only help to progress treatment through emotional support and medical technology.
2.According to the ACS statistics, it is overwhelming to know that an estimated 1.5 million new cancer cases diagnosed each year. According to the American Cancer Society, “much of the suffering and death from cancer could be prevented by more systematic efforts to reduce tobacco use and obesity, improve diet and physical activity and the use of established screening tests” (ACS, 2017, Prevention). It is estimated that by the end of 2017, 190,500 cancer deaths in the US will be caused by cigarette smoke alone and 20% of all cancers are caused by a combination of excess body weight, physical inactivity, excess alcohol consumption and poor nutrition (cancer.org, 2017). It is interesting that breast cancer is projected to be the highest number of newly diagnosed cases of cancer, yet it drops down to being the fourth estimated leading cause of death in 2017 (ACS, 2017, Prevention). These estimated numbers lead one to believe that early detection and treatment are helping to reduce the number of terminal cases.
3.The American Cancer Society funds many research programs, one of which is for Breast Cancer. As of August 1, 2017, the ACS has funded 159 Grants in the amount of $88,348,750 for breast cancer research (ACS, 2017, Funding). Researchers who have received these grants are focusing on different aspects of breast cancer. Some of this research includes developing a new combination HER2/neu treatment, investigating if a newly discovered protein called CCLS has any link to breast cancer, looking for other pharmacology medications that provide treatment to women who have become resistant to certain drugs, trying to identify the biomarkers that are responsible for breast cancer spreading to the brain, researching if acupressure is an effective alternative to pain management, and this list does go on and on. The ACS also has an internal research team that is “analyzing data on an ongoing basis from Cancer Prevention Study 11, which the Society began in 1982, to investigate linkages between lifestyle and breast cancer” as well as “conducting a new multi-year cancer prevention study, CPS-3, to better understand ways to prevent cancer, including breast cancer (ACS, 2017, Funding). The impact of this research has been proven already.” From 1989-2014(most recent data available), breast cancer mortality decreased by 38 percent (avoiding about 300,000 deaths). This decline in mortality is due to improved breast cancer treatment and early detection” (Susan G Komen, 2017). This decline has been made possible through organizations such as the American Cancer Society.

Upon entering the site it is clear that there is a hotline posted for any questions or assistance needed. If questions aren’t answered from reading the information that is posted, then the hotline can additionally assist. Immediately the heading labeled “Cancer A-Z” caught my eye. I had a friend that recently died from cancer after being diagnosed one week before. Due to the lack of information of the next steps of cancer, we went to this website for guidance. This site breaks down cancer by its type, explains all about that cancer, treatments, diets, and so on. Not only is it like an encyclopedia for cancer, but also a glossary for unknown medical terms. Under the “Treatment and Support” tab, there are resources for those interested, such as paying, treatment, nearing end-of life, caregiving, and children. All these tools are support systems depending on the topic and needs of the patient. We were able to use the tool on “Treatment & Side effects” to inform our friend about what the next steps would be, even before the doctor saw him! They simply informed him to come back a week later for an informational class on chemotherapy. He never made it.
What services would you recommend and why?
Because, my friend died so quickly, I would recommend really looking into Nearing-End of Life. My friend was 20 years older than his wife and they had no children. Although, many things were handled smoothly, the quick death has left my friend with some tasks she has had to do blind and alone. So, I would recommend everyone look into this category, and the possible outcomes if death occurs. Next, would be caregiver. I believe those caring for loved ones with cancer need help. My sister-in-law’s brother passed away at a young age after being married for 2 years. Due to his brain cancer, it changed him and he had some mood swings. His wife left him, and we believe had she reached out for help to the family and a support system, it would not have had to come to that.
2. What factors contribute to the yearly incidence and mortality rates of various cancers in Americans? What changes in policy and practice are most likely to affect these figures over time.
According to NIH (2017) “SES is most often based on a person’s income, education level, occupation, and other factors, such as social status in the community and where he or she lives. Studies have found that SES, more than race or ethnicity, predicts the likelihood of an individual’s or a group’s access to education, certain occupations, health insurance, and living conditions including conditions where exposure to environmental toxins is most common, all of which are associated with the risk of developing and surviving cancer”. According to NCCS (2017) “ Public policy is a system of regulatory decisions, legislative actions, funding priorities, and other courses of action as well as analysis by advocates and other groups. Everyone who is diagnosed with cancer is impacted by public policy.” Meaning, the impact can include funding for research for certain therapies, screening guidelines, Medicare coverage for treatment, and many more financial and practical issues related to care. Since the beginning of the survivorship movement, policy change has been essential to ensuring cancer survivors have access to high-quality, evidence-based cancer care.
- Describe the program and discuss what impact the research will have on the prevention or treatment of cancer.
Road to Recovery is a program that is offered the American Cancer Society (2017). It helps in the following three ways:
- Coordinate a ride with an American Cancer Society volunteer driver
- Coordinate a ride with a local organization that has partnered with us to provide transportation
- Refer you to a local resource you can contact for help
Furthermore, one personal research program that I liked was the Cancer Control and Prevention Research. This program basically studies the behaviors that can reduce cancer risk, iit targets early detection, and can recommend ways improve quality of life of patients and families.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is an organization that funds and conducts research, shares expert information, and supports patients to free the world from cancer through prevention and care. Education and support are important when people are newly diagnosed with cancer. Being diagnosed with cancer is a shocking, and life changing experience. Knowing the correct places to go for answers can help with the anxiety of the diagnosis. Many people research their medical diagnoses in google, and are brought to unreliable sources. Unreliable information may cause their anxiety to become worse. The ACS is committed to providing research based information to the community to improve the quality of life in cancer patients and to provide better treatments. They provide information for specific cancers on their website, including information about understanding the pathology report, learning about recent news, and understanding the specific diagnosis. For example, patients with lung cancer may have three different types of lung cancer, including non-small cell, small cell, and lung carcinoid tumors.
They also provide information about treatments, side effects, what to expect during and after treatments, and ways to find and pay for treatment. In addition, ACS provides information for caregivers and family, end of life care, and includes information for children with cancer (ACS, 2017a).
They also provide resources for support. They provide information for connecting to the national cancer information center, are connected to patient lodging programs and rides to treatment, and give information for cosmetic companies to improve coping from hair loss or breast loss. Their webpage helps patients to search for programs for support in their area and online groups (ACS, 2017b).
For my friend or colleague, I would suggest the National Cancer Information Center. They provide up to date information and the ability to connect the patient with services and resources (ACS, 2017b). I would also point them to the information about payment and finding treatment for their cancer. Even with insurance, cancer can be expensive and knowing where to seek treatment is not always easy. The information provided on their website would be beneficial to lessoning that burden (ACS, 2017c).
2) According to the National Cancer Institute, lack of health care coverage and low socioeconomic status are factors that contribute to health disparities. This information, plus medically underserved populations contributes to mortality rates, because those patients that do not receive regular care are more likely to be diagnosed later, when cancer may be untreatable. Race also contributes to the incidence and mortality rate. Some races and groups are more likely to have certain types of cancers. For example, African Americas, Asian Americans, Hispanics and Latinos, American Indians, Alaskan Natives, and underserved Whites are more likely to have higher incidences of cancer and higher death statistics (NCI, 2008). The NCI also notes that obesity and aging are risk factors for cancer (NCI, 2017).
Policy changes and practices help to decrease the rates of cancer. For example, work environments, restaurants, and other public facilities have changed to non-smoking. The decline in smoking has caused a decline in cancers caused by smoking. From 2004 to 2013, the rate of cancer deaths have decreased by 1.8% in men and 1.4% in women; in addition, there was a 1.4% decreased from children aged 0-19 between 2009-2013 (NCI, 2017). Screening for cancer can affect the figures over time, because early screening may detect early cancer inpatients. For example, a new campaign by the CDC, Inside Knowledge: Get the Facts About Gynecologic Cancer, helps to raise awareness, and has been popular, with 5.6 million visits to their website. More people may be screened, which in turn would increase the rates of detected cancer (CDC, 2016).
3) There are several different research programs funded by the ACS. Nutrition is always on my mind. When I go to the store, I am forced to decide between organic foods or inorganic foods, whole grain or whole wheat, dairy-free or dairy. The ACS funded research about nutrition and cancer, with a $726,000 5-year grant. The Harvard Medical School and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA conducted research to discover how diet increase or decrease the chance of developing colon cancer. They use plasma samples and look at 2,700 different samples to compare diets and metabolism. The Western diet is very different from the Mediterranean diet in foods consumed. “The bottom line is, we are not what we eat but what we metabolize,” and blood will show what we eat and what we are at risk for developing because of our dietary choices (Dale, 2017). This information will help to prevent cancers by educating the population on diet changes. When more processed foods are consumed, it can lead to more inflammation. When more fruits, vegetables, and fish are consumed, people tend to have less chronic inflammation, which results in less colorectal cancer (Dale, 2017).

Discussion—Population Growth
To study the growth of a population mathematically, we use the concept of exponential models. Generally speaking, if we want to predict the increase in the population at a certain period in time, we start by considering the current population and apply an assumed annual growth rate. For example, if the U.S. population in 2008 was 301 million and the annual growth rate was 0.9%, what would be the population in the year 2050? To solve this problem, we would use the following formula:
P(1 + r)n
In this formula, P represents the initial population we are considering, r represents the annual growth rate expressed as a decimal and n is the number of years of growth. In this example, P = 301,000,000, r = 0.9% = 0.009 (remember that you must divide by 100 to convert from a percentage to a decimal), and n = 42 (the year 2050 minus the year 2008). Plugging these into the formula, we find:
P(1 + r)n = 301,000,000(1 + 0.009)42
= 301,000,000(1.009)42
= 301,000,000(1.457)
= 438,557,000
Therefore, the U.S. population is predicted to be 438,557,000 in the year 2050.
Let’s consider the situation where we want to find out when the population will double. Let’s use this same example, but this time we want to find out when the doubling in population will occur assuming the same annual growth rate. We’ll set up the problem like the following:
Double P = P(1 + r)n
P will be 301 million, Double P will be 602 million, r = 0.009, and we will be looking for n.
Double P = P(1 + r)n
602,000,000 = 301,000,000(1 + 0.009)n
Now, we will divide both sides by 301,000,000. This will give us the following:
2 = (1.009)n
To solve for n, we need to invoke a special exponent property of logarithms. If we take the log of both sides of this equation, we can move exponent as shown below:
log 2 = log (1.009)n
log 2 = n log (1.009)
Now, divide both sides of the equation by log (1.009) to get:
n = log 2 / log (1.009)
Using the logarithm function of a calculator, this becomes:
n = log 2/log (1.009) = 77.4
Therefore, the U.S. population should double from 301 million to 602 million in 77.4 years assuming annual growth rate of 0.9 %.
Now it is your turn:
- Search the Internet and determine the most recent population of your home state. A good place to start is the U.S. Census Bureau (www.census.gov) which maintains all demographic information for the country. If possible, locate the annual growth rate for your state. If you can not locate this value, feel free to use the same value (0.9%) that we used in our example above.
- Determine the population of your state 10 years from now.
- Determine how long and in what year the population in your state may double assuming a steady annual growth rate.
- Look up the population of the city in which you live. If possible, find the annual percentage growth rate of your home city (use 0.9% if you can not locate this value).
- Determine the population of your city in 10 years.
- Determine how long until the population of your city doubles assuming a steady growth rate.
- Discuss factors that could possibly influence the growth rate of your city and state.
- Do you live in a city or state that is experiencing growth?
- Is it possible that you live in a city or state where the population is on the decline or hasn’t changed?
- How would you solve this problem if the case involved a steady decline in the population (say -0.9% annually)? Show an example.
- Think of other real world applications (besides monitoring and modeling populations) where exponential equations can be utilized.

Do you feel confident in review and understanding lab results? Yes or No? What could make you more confident? What techniques have you used in the past to learn more?
This is meant to be a “learn from eachother” post.
For me, as a former ICU nurse, I felt very weak in lab study/understanding as a new nurse. I found it was always best to ask why when I did not understand how this could impact a patient. Also, I lived with my lab interpretation manual and things eventually became easier. I forced myself to understand the impoact of sodium, potassium and the impacts the imbalances have on the heart. Also, how certain meds (Lasix) can deplete this……

- How will this information be useful for your career development and management?
Write your responses in about 300 words.
Information from Career Assessment
Organizations today have adopted innovative measures to retain key talent and reduce turnover. These measures include dual-career paths and alternative or flexible work arrangements. In addition, some organizations also provide their employees with outplacement, recruitment, and coaching services.
Managers should know and understand how to develop an employee in his/her preferred career path. In order for the assessment data to be beneficial to the employee, the manager should understand and know how to interpret the data. For this assignment, you will conduct an interview with someone who is in or has been in a management position and write a 4-5 page paper covering the following items:
- What value does the manager you interviewed place on career self-assessments?
- What role does the interviewee play in helping his or her employee reach their career objectives? Does the manager see any room for improvement in this area? Why or why not?
- Based on your interview, outline proactive approaches employees can employ to gain assistance from his/her manager to advance within the organization and discuss how the information gathered from a career assessment can be used to promote internal career development
- In addition, address the steps the employee can take to ensure assistance is received on a continual basis from the manager to promote workplace self-development.
All sources should be cited in proper APA format
