BA 382 – Homework Assignment Handout
Due Dates are shown on the Moodle
This document provides requirements and instructions for each homework assignment. Unless otherwise
instructed, homework assignments are to be printed out and handed in during the class they are due.
An “A” grade (95/100 pts) can be earned by submitting a homework assignment on-time that satisfies ALL
criteria, is written well, is relevant to the topic, and has no grammatical or spelling errors. Departures from the
required format, omission of required content, and spelling errors will result in a grade reduction.
Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date shown on the class schedule and will be collected
after you have briefly summarized what you read with the class. A 10% “late fee” is assessed per day for late
assignments and worth zero points if submitted one week after their due date. Also, tech alert grades are
reduced by an additional 10% deduction if they are not shared in class.
Technical issues are not valid reasons for late submissions.
Please realize that the notes in the ‘callouts’ on Page four showing a sample tech alert are REQUIREMENTS,
not suggestions. Remember to explicitly tie your article summary back to the material presented in the text.
Read the chapters BEFORE you look for articles.
HW #1: Tech Alert on IT & Strategy (Ch 3 or 4) -OR- Hardware/Emerging Technology (Ch 5)
Ch 3 or 4 IT Strategy option: Find one article that relates to the content covered in Chapters 3 or 4 in our
text. For this option, choose one of the following approaches:
• Summarize a recent ‘real-world’ example that illustrates one topic presented in one of these chapters or find a related article that extends the book’s discussion on IT and strategy, and/or;
• Discuss or provide an example of a key term shown in the book margins from Chapters 3 or 4.
• Look at the discussion questions at the end of the chapter sections and find an article that helps you answer a question that is posed, or;
• Follow-up on a specific case study that is presented in the text or find comparable examples. If you choose this option, you must focus on new information about the organization that is not included in the
text.
Chapter 5: Moore’s Law and More
• Look for an article that discusses emerging technologies or trends discussed in the text, focusing on the use or potential use by organizations or individuals. Try to find examples of new products that illustrate
the “fifth wave” of technology (RFID, wearable computing, emerging technologies).
• Other options would be to find an article that discuss Moore’s law, the move toward mobile technologies (smart phones), advances in hardware technology, grid computing, or e-waste.
HW #2: Tech Alert on Software (Ch 13 or 14)
Chapter 13: Understanding Software or Chapter 14: Software in Flux
• Find an article that focuses on managerial advice or trends relating to Cloud Computing, Open Source Software, Service-Oriented Architecture (SoA), Enterprise systems, ERP, Software as a Service (SaaS),
or;
• Look for an article that covers user interface design and/or trends/advances in the user interface (speech, gesture recognition, mobility, etc.), or;
• Find an article that discusses new system development or implementation in an organization–Success or Failure; or
• If you have participated in the implementation of a new information system deployment at work (even as an end-user), you can write up your experiences. No article is required if you choose this option, but
the rest of the tech alert requirements must be followed (quote from text, etc.)
Page 2 of 6 BA 382 Homework Handout
HW #3: Tech Alert on Amazon (Ch 7)
• Follow similar instructions from previous Tech Alerts and find information relating to Amazon and current events. Be sure to include a citation from our text in the first paragraph linking your article to the
text.
HW #4: Tech Alert on Facebook or Google (Ch 11 or 18).
• Follow similar instructions from previous Tech Alerts and find information relating to Facebook or Google and current events. Be sure to include a citation from our text in the first paragraph linking your
article to the text.
REQUIRED FORMAT & CONTENT OF TECH ALERTS
Technology alerts are one full-page (no more or less) memos addressed to the instructor. The focus should be
to 1) introduce the article by first explaining why it is relevant to our chapter topic, 2) summarize the main
points of the article, and 3) provide a ‘response’ to the article.
Unless otherwise specified, the source used should be an article published within the last 6 months from a
credible source. Acceptable sources are published articles in magazines, newspapers, scholarly journals, or on-
line publications. Company web sites, personal sites, blog entries, Wikipedia entries, etc. are not valid sources of
information for this assignment. Do not use company press releases or product announcements. Rule of thumb:
If you can’t find an article title, date when published, AND author name(s), then you are not looking at a
suitable article for this assignment.
I recommend finding in-depth articles in business magazines or newspapers that focus on USE of technology
rather than the technology itself. An appropriate article selection with clear relevance to the chapter content is
required. The business databases available from www.sou.edu/library may be helpful. Another good option is to
browse or search specific on-line IT/business publications – links to some of these are provided in Moodle.
The callouts on the following page highlight the format and content requirements for each tech alert.
Additional comments:
• Include at least one direct reference (quotation) from the assigned chapter of the text. This quote must be used to provide a logical connection from the textbook to the information in your article summary.
Cite the quote properly (e.g. (Gallaugher, 2016, p. 123)) or ((Gallaugher, 2016, sec. 5.3) for e-book
users) and use the format shown on the next page. Do not include our text under the memo heading
where you will list the article reference that you found.
• Any text that comes straight from the article must also be in quotes. Because the memo is a summary of the article and you have given all the proper citation information in the first paragraph, you can cite the
article within the text by referring to the article itself, the writer’s name. (See tech alert for example.)
• If you read terminology or see acronyms that you are unfamiliar with, look them up (in the book glossary or in an on-line computing dictionary), and include the definition in your write-up. If you
don’t understand what you are writing about, that defeats the purpose of this assignment. Do not use an
article you don’t understand – look for another.
• Conclude your memo with your own thoughts/comments. Do not provide new information from the article in this paragraph. This paragraph can include, but is not limited to:
o personal observations, o your perception of the importance of the issue or your response to what you learned, or o conclusions about how the information from the article supports or refutes information from the
text, or from something you’ve learned in another class,

Page 3 of 6 BA 382 Homework Handout
Identifying the source of your information: As shown in the example on the next page, use published articles
and include the name of the article, the author, the date posted (not the date you accessed it), and the name of the
journal, newspaper, or magazine. Do not identify the search engine (Google or the library database
(EBSCO-Host) as the source of your article. Use the name of the publication itself.
The sample tech alert on the next page is an illustration of the content and format of a tech alert.
Please Note: the sample assignment uses a bullet format to summarize some points made in the article. Using
bulleted points can be helpful, but this is not required. If you do use bulleted points, be sure that you provide a
logical ‘introduction’ to the points, that each point corresponds with that introductory statement, and that the
points you make are consistent in style, verb use, etc.

Subject: Outsourcing Software Development (Chapter 10)
Date: Today’s Date
Pickering, C. (2015, October 10). Choosing the best software sourcing solution. Retrieved from
http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/ /article.php/3629041
In response to our discussion concerning the trends towards outsourcing software development,
I thought you might be interested in the article cited above. Outsourcing is defined in the
textbook as “the purchase of any product or service from another company” (Gallaugher, 2016,
p. xx) or ((Gallaugher, 2016, sec. x.x) for e-book readers).
This article compares the benefits of outsourcing software development to the benefits of
developing software in-house. According to a recent survey, “50% of existing production
applications were delivered by in-house development, 46% by purchased packages, 3% by
domestic outsourcing, almost 1% by Application Service Providers (ASP), and less than 1% by
offshore outsourcing.”
The article mentions the following advantages of in-house development:
• Employee commitment: employees realize that their success depends on corporate success.
• Company knowledge: employees know the company products, they know how the company operates, and they understand company culture.
• Physical proximity: the developers and users can have regular face-to-face meetings as well as informal contact around the “coffee pot”. As noted in the article, physical
proximity “promotes better personal relationships that, in turn, promote better project
results.”
Pickering notes that the primary advantage of outsourcing is to save on costs, but notes that the
advantages of in-house development as stated above are hard to overcome. He concludes the
article by stating that internal and external projects are not suited for the same types of projects.
“The more commodity-like the project the better suited it is for external development. The more
unique-which usually means the more critical to corporate success-the better suited it is for
internal development.” (Pickering, 2015, p. 2). He goes on to state that it doesn’t have to be all
or nothing: the simple functions of a large project are subcontracted, while the subtle or
complex functions can be developed internally.
Many of the points made in this article were consistent with those made in the text and it was
helpful to read about how the approach taken may depend on the type of system in
development. However, the article overlooked several disadvantages of insourcing software
development discussed in our text, particularly the lack of expertise that in-house developers
may have with new technologies.

Technology Plan Assignment
Creating a business plan is the primary activity of BA499 Business Planning, the capstone course required for
business majors. The purpose of this assignment is for you to think about 1) how your type of business could
achieve competitive advantages through the use of technology and 2) how information technology can be used
to support your core transaction processing. To do this, you will need to find and examine two different
software applications that could be used by your business. (If you don’t have an idea for a business plan yet,
that’s okay – just pick a specific type of business that you could potentially be interested in.) Note: Many classes
evolve around your business idea so it will benefit you in the long run to decide on a business type and use the
same business for your remaining courses.
Secondly, you will need to develop your information system that is intertwined within your marketing strategy.
Information systems will aid in customer data collection and can be used to facilitate customer retention if
properly used to its full potential. You will develop a strategy that uses your information system to attain and
retain current and future customers.
Formatting and Content Requirements: Your report must be a minimum of three full pages and should be
professional in appearance. Specifically, include a centered title at the top of the first page, and create a page
footer with your name, date, and page number (in Page x of y format as shown in this document). The following
five sections should be included with underlined headings and paragraphs should be double-line spaced. Use
Times New Roman 12-point font and single-line spacing throughout.
Business Description:
• Provide a thorough description of your potential business: products/services your business will provide, your target market, an estimate of the size of the business, and where your business will be located. If
you are proposing a unique type of business, be sure that your business model (how you make money) is
evident. Copying and using an existing business is not permissible. Discuss why you chose a particular
target market and location for your business.
Social Media and Marketing Strategy:
• Discuss your social media and e-commerce strategies. Some possible questions to consider: What types of Web 2.0 strategies would you employ? Would you have a website? What purpose(s) would it
serve? Do you anticipate conducting any B2B or B2C e-commerce? How can you use social media to
increase your competitive advantage? Which social media sites will you use (you must specifically
name the ones you will use)?
Information System:
• List at least five different pieces of data (other than name, phone, email) that you will collect from your potential customers – assume you can get any information you would like such as birthdate, social
security #, etc.
• Two of the five pieces of data must be unique to your industry (e.g. if selling alcohol, you would need a birthdate). Be specific and use all five pieces of data. The data will help to inform you of who your
customer is. This is the heart of your information system so attention to detail is crucial. Specifically
address what processes you will use to attain and retain your customers with your information system.
For example, will you mail them a postcard on their birthday?
Page 6 of 6 BA 382 Homework Handout
Data processing needs
• Look for a software solution that is specific to your type of business. General applications are available for common business tasks (such as payroll and accounting), but there is also a wide range of “vertical
software applications” that address the needs of specific types of businesses, such as retail management,
service management, restaurant management, fundraising, etc. Often, there are even more focused
solutions within an industry type – for example, there is retail software specific to bicycle shops,
restaurant management software addressing the unique needs of pizzerias, etc. Find software that is
customized as much as possible to your specific business type.
• Describe why your company needs a software program and what type you are searching for.
• Find and compare two like applications (purchasable software or a web-based “cloud computing” solution) that address your core transaction processes. For example, if your business is a retail store,
focus on a system that streamlines point of sale (POS) and inventory processes.
• Create a table (sample table shown below) to compare your selected programs using the format shown below. In the first column, list at least eight software requirements for your business, and indicate
whether the solutions that you are considering would meet these requirements.
Example of selected software requirements for a Property Management Company. Start each
requirement with a VERB – each requirement should complete the sentence: “The system will be used
to ____________.”
Software Requirements
Name of
Software A
Name of
Software B
Process Rental Income Yes Yes
Calculate Management Fees Yes No
Enter work orders for repairs Yes Yes
Issue monthly owner statements Yes Yes
Track tenant complaints No Yes
Track security deposits Yes No
Print 1099 forms Yes No
• Choose one of the two applications that you looked into and state why you would choose that application over the other.
• In narrative form, specifically describe two business processes that are automated or streamlined through the use of your chosen software.
Operating Environment
• Your software choice will determine your hardware needs. What are the specifications of the hardware/operating system needed to run your chosen software? Most web sites include specific
information on system requirements. List all of the requirements in this section.
• For every piece of equipment that your business needs, you need to provide the specifications of that hardware (processor speed, memory, OS, etc.).
• If your chosen solution is a web-based SaaS offering, you will still need to supply the specifications of the hardware and operating system that you will be using to access the SaaS.
• You will not get credit for this section if you merely put that you need a computer that can access the Internet.

MGT490

Guideline to Group Research Project Report
Selection of the firm
You will select a publicly traded OR a private corporation which has business operations in the U.S (referred to as your “target company”). Based on the financial and non-financial information from and about your target firm, you will study its industry and identify the unique factors in this industry that may influence your target company’s performance.
Guideline of the report
The report will be divided into three broad categories (Introduction, research content, and a summary of your conclusions and recommendations) and these will contain several important segments. Each category and segment should be clearly labeled. Each of these generic segments is crucial to a logical and professional summary of your discoveries and conclusions.
Introduction (1-3 pages):
This is a very important part of your report. You could include the following in your introduction section:

  1. Provide a brief history of the company (DO NOT cut and paste data from company site).
  2. Why this particular company becomes your target firm (i.e. Position in the market, achievement and challenge it is facing).
  3. Indicate the industry the firm is in. Provide some environmental context data and explain some major trends and events in the target’s primary industry or industries.
  4. Main businesses (products or services) or business categories (for diversified companies) and their market (local, national or global)
  5. Highlight any general information that will be particularly interesting, informative, and/or decision useful to the reader.
  6. You may review your introduction part by asking yourself: 1. Does the introduction appear long enough? Is it too general, too specific? 2. Does it provide an adequate outline of the order in which the material and analysis will be presented in the following sections?  3. Does the introduction effectively capture interest and attention? Why is this particular firm selected for study?

Central Content (8-12 pages):
This is the essential part of your research report. It should be objective and interpretative. You will report what you have observed and then you will interpret what you believe it means for future operations. The body should be divided into CLEARLY marked sections which are listed below. Although the focus of this section is to present your findings, but your findings need to be supported by evidence. Cite specific details (events, facts, and/or figures) to justify each of your opinions. It is important to include facts and figures (make sure you indicate the source of your data and information). The report should be objective and professional with the appropriate embedding of statistics to instill confidence in the reader of your report.
You may discuss the following aspects of the target firm (please include at least four from the list). Make sure you state your sub-conclusion for each of these discussions:

  1. The change of the general environment shape (re-shape) the industry that the target firm is in
  2. Take an industry analysis (use Porter’s five forces model)
  3. Discuss the competitive rivalry (major competitors) in the market
  4. What are the major S, W, O and T of the target firm?
  5. Define the business-level strategy (three generic strategies) that the target firm is adopting.
  6. Choose at least one corporate-level strategy (diversification, or M&A, or international or strategic alliance) that the target firm is taking and discuss the outcomes of it.
  7. Are there any challenge that the target firm is facing in terms of implementation of their strategies? (you may discuss corporate governance such as Board of Directors, executives, corporate structure and control or innovation about the target firm)
  8. Anything else you feel interesting to discuss about the target firm)

Summary (2-4 pages)
Connect all of the parts of your sub-conclusions by providing a cursory summary of your introduction and your central content section. Then express a series of opinions and an overall conclusion about the target company’s performance. What conclusions have been drawn about the company’s performance and why? It is essential to avoid expressing a series of unsupported opinions or making unsubstantiated statements (make sure it is consistent with your discussion in the second section).
Checklist of the report

  1. A title page with the company name, the group number and all group member names
  2. Page number your report
  3. Not exceeding 20 pages (font size 12, double spaced, excluding appendix and references)
  4. Work cited page (including all online materials)

Visual Analysis Presentation

Create a media presentation using either PPT or Prezi to provide your analysis of a print advertisement of your choice. Please include the following elements in your presentation:

  • Title Page (Should include your MLA heading info)
  • What is the overall purpose of the advertisement?
  • What is the mood, tone, or atmosphere?
  • What colors are used? How do they affect the audience or make the audience feel?
  • What images, shapes, forms, colors, movements, words, notes stand out? Why do they stand out?
  • What context surrounds the image (e.g. time period, creator, purpose)?
  • Evaluate the success of the piece: does the artist/creator achieve their goal?
  • Must have a works cited page
  • Font is easy to read
  • Overall aesthetics of presentation is visually appealing

Each of the above bullet points will be worth 10% of the overall grade for this assignment, and you should address each bullet point on a separate slide. Also, please include a copy of the advertisement you have chosen so that I can visualize it when grading your assignment.

CPSC503 Operating Systems Fall 2017 Project 2 – A Portable File System using Contiguous Allocation

CPSC503 Operating Systems Fall 2017 Project 2 – A Portable File System using Contiguous Allocation
Method for GCP VM Due: Friday, December 1, 2017. 11:59:59 PM (EST) Objective:
1. Practical experience with the problems of file systems. 2. Experience with the Windows or Unix/Linux operating system. 3. Keep the definition simple. Don’t read things into the problem that aren’t there.
These will be individual projects. For Project 2 you will use any operating system under Google Cloud Platform (GCP) VM. You may write the program in any language that is supported under any Integrated Development Environment (IDE) that runs on your selected OS on VM. Keep in mind that more help may be available to you in some languages than in others. Furthermore, available controls, etc. may make some of these tasks easier in one language than in another. Problem Statement: Implement a Portable File System (PFS) with Contiguous Allocation Method, which can perform “Allocate a file”, and “Move files from the Windows file system into your file.” You should have your own directory structure, allocation table, etc. inside your file. Move files back out of your file to the Windows file system or Linux/Unix file system. When your program is running it should somehow accept the following commands: open PFSfile Allocate a new 10 KByte “PFS” file if it does not already exist. If it does exist, begin using it for further commands. put myfile Copy the Windows (or Unix/Linux) file “myfile” into your PFS file. get myfile Extract file “myfile” from your PFS file and copy it to the current Windows (or Unix/Linux) directory. rm myfile Delete “myfile” from your PFS file. dir List the files in your PFS file. putr myfile “Remarks” Append remarks to the directory entry for myfile in your PFS file. kill PFSfile Delete the PFSfile from the Windows file system.
quit Exit PFS. You can provide those commands through command line interface ONLY (No GUI will be accepted). Limits:
1. PFS is NOT a memory based file system, but based on the existing file system on your OS, such as Windows or Linux/Unix.
2. Command-Line Interface (CLI) Only, i.e., cmd.exe (in Windows) or shell interface (in Unix/Linux). When PFS is executed, it will show the prompt as: C:\> pfs.exe PFS> open pfs
3. Filenames are a maximum of 20 bytes. And, file extension is optional like Unix/Linux.
4. The directory need handle only Name, Size, Time and Date. For example, PFS> dir Test1.txt 128 bytes 12:30 PM September 2 Test2.txt 512 bytes 11:00 AM November 11 Lee.exe 1k bytes 08:52 PM September 1 . . .
5. If the original PFS file fills up then you should create a new PFS “volume” with the same name but a different suffix – e.g., pfs.1, pfs.2, etc., each the same size as the first “volume”.
6. Your file system should use Contiguous Allocation for an allocation scheme where “disk block” size is 256 bytes.
7. In your files system, each file has one File Control Block (FCB) that includes file name, file size, create time, create date, starting block ID, ending block ID and more (if needed).
8. Your file system should consist of two main parts, i) Directory Structure and ii) Data Blocks. Therefore, you need to define the directory data structure that includes File Control Block (FCB) for each file.
9. In addition, your files system should be able to manage free blocks. You can use any techniques that you learned in the classroom, such as bit map (vector) or linked free space management. Free block management should be part of directory structure.
10. You should handle unusual conditions such as trying to put a file into the PFS when a file with that name is already there, file too large to fit into one “volume”, etc.
If you need to make assumptions, do so. Make a “reasonable” choice & include it in the write-up. Reasonable means that you can explain the logic behind your choice. These problems change each semester and it is difficult to imagine every question that might come up. When in doubt, ask to Professor Lee or the GA. Write-up You should submit a write-up as well as your program. Your write-up should include any known bugs, limitations, and assumptions in your program. This write-up should be in text-format and titled as ‘README’. It should be submitted along with your code. GA will use the ‘README’ file to compile (or install) and run your program. If the GA has trouble with your program then he will contact you to makeup it. Submission You will submit your program using Canvas Assignment (https://bridgeport.instructure.com/login ). If you have any trouble to use Canvas, you can contact GA or instructor. You should zip your source files and write-up (README) into a single file and submit it. Be sure that you include everything necessary to unzip this file on another machine and compile and run it. This might includes forms, modules, classes, configuration file, etc. DO NOT include the executable file itself, we will recompile it. The name of your submitted zip file should be your “UB account”_”ID”_”Project2”. For example, “jelee_000000_Project2.zip”. Make sure your name and UB ID are listed in both your write-up and source code. You may resubmit your program at any time. However, please do not ask the GA to grade your program and then resubmit it. The submission time of the latest submission will be used for determining whether the assignment is on time or not. Late submissions will be accepted at a penalty of 10 points per day. In other words, it may pay you to do this project early on the off chance that something prohibits your submitting it in a timely way. If your program is not working by the deadline, submit it anyway and review it together with GA for partial credit. Do not take a zero on any lab just because the program isn’t working yet. If you have trouble getting started, ask the professor or the GA. Grading points element

· Write clearly and concisely about communication networks using proper writing mechanics and technical style conventions.
Case Study 3 ING Life
ING Life (formerly NN Financial) is a leading provider of life insurance products in Canada. The company is based in Ontario and operates out of three regional offices. Over 2000 brokerage partners market its products [BRUN99IBM00]. In 1997 most of the brokers relied on fax, phone, and postal services to request policy information. Response times could sometimes be measured in hours. The company did have a 56-kbps frame relay wide area network, but that only connected the Ontario headquarters to 70 managing general agent offices ( Figure III.1 ). The systems in Ontario converted the frame relay requests to SNA from TCP/IP and routed them to the corporate mainframe in Connecticut.
In December of 1997, ING decided it had to reduce response times to remain competitive and attract new brokers. The company wanted a cost-effective solution that could provide its brokers fast access to mainframe data and scale to accommodate new partners. ING investigated extending the existing frame relay network and estimated the cost at a prohibitive $3.3 million.

image1.jpgFigure III.1 ING Life Network before Using Internet

image2.jpg

Figure III.2 ING Life Network with Extranet

Instead, the company decided to build an extranet and offer a Web-to-host service that would allow partners to access mainframe data directly via the Internet. ING estimated the annual cost of extranet services for 2000 brokers at $70,000. The annual cost of maintaining the existing WAN for 70 brokers was $750,000.
Besides reducing maintenance costs, the Web-to-host solution offered other benefits. The client software installed automatically as a browser applet, thereby reducing administrative costs. Also, using a browser as an interface meant that brokers were no longer tied to a specific workstation or PC.
The new solution would include two NT servers, a new SNA gateway (to translate between SNA and IP), and a Cisco Pix firewall connected to the Internet via a leased T-1 line ( Figure III.2 ). The NT servers would run Lotus Notes, IBM Host on Demand (Web-to-host software), and Web server software. Because this service would send private data over the public Internet, security was a concern. The Pix firewall would prevent unauthorized access to the data. In addition, the Web-to-host software used an SSL (secure sockets layer) connection (described in Chapter 18). Before bringing the service on line, ING had security consultants probe the system for vulnerabilities.
By July of 1999, ING had 350 brokers connected to the extranet and plans to connect the remaining brokers by sometime in 2000. To use the new service, brokers connect to the Internet using dial-up and point their browser at the Web server. The Host on Demand client loads automatically as a browser applet. The applet provides TN3270 emulation services. After the applet has loaded, the broker can access the corporate mainframe as if he is using a directly connected TN3270 terminal. Response times for extranet requests are less than one minute.

Discussion Forum 11

This is by far the most difficult discussion forum we will have in this course. Please remember this when you are posting your responses on the forum. These are not anonymous!! Also, I will be monitoring this regularly. In order to receive full credit for participating in the discussion forum you will need to not only post your response but also respond to one other person’s response. Try your best to use anthropology and/or other scientific points in your arguments rather than personal opinions.
A few years ago a movie came out called “White Men Can’t Jump”. There have also been numerous Sports Illustrated Articles on where have all the white men gone in sports. Specifically, these articles target basketball and football. The discussion always leads to some type of point that black men (most of the articles are about men) are physically more athletic than white men. There have actually been some interesting developments in recent news. Please read the notes below:
Tiger Woods Quote “Hockey is a sport for white men. Basketball is a sport for black men. Golf is a sport for white men dressed like black pimps.” Tiger Woods quotes (American Golfer, b.1975)
Jimmy the Greek Story Jimmy (The Greek) Snyder was ejected from the public eye in 1988 when, on Martin Luther King’s birthday, he said that blacks are better at sports because of slave plantation breeding techniques. “During the slave period, the slave owner would breed his big black with his big woman so that he would have a big black kid-that’s where it all started.”
HoopsHype.com Columns Where have all the honkies gone? by Dennis Hans / October 30, 2002 As the National Basketball Association begins another season and unveils its latest line of sleek foreign imports, one can t help but notice that the best of the league s fair-skinned domestic models is 40 years old. Forty! Props are certainly in order for John Stockton. Before he grabbed Father Time s shorts and decked him with an elbow while the ref wasn t looking, there had never been a point guard, black or white, functioning at near-all-star level at 36, let alone 40. But the fact that this gifted geezer can still kick the booty of any other U.S.born white man in the NBA is compelling evidence of a disintegrating demographic.
Not so long ago, America produced palefaces who could run like the wind, board like a bear and shoot like The Rifleman. In fact, they shot better than The Rifleman, or at least the actor who portrayed him. Before Chuck Connors took Hollywood by storm, he averaged 4.6 points a game for the 1946-47 Boston Celtics, shooting a scattershot 24.7% from the field and 46.4% from the line. Of course, Connors only qualified for NBA work because he came along when African Americans were banned from the league. But consider some of the white players who have shined in an integrated NBA: Bob Cousy, Jerry West, Rick Barry, Dolph Schayes, Bob Pettit, Jerry Lucas, Billy Cunningham, Gail Goodrich, John Havlicek, Dave DeBusschere, Bill Walton, Dave Cowens, Bobby Jones, Dan Issel, Kiki Vandeweghe, Paul Westphal, Pete Maravich, Kevin McHale and Larry Bird. What those greats have in common is they all played back in the day. Today, if you find a white guy who can really play, you can bet your 201(k) he s from far away.
Black America s families, thank goodness, continue to produce quality NBA stars, thus preventing the U.S. from descending to the level of international laughingstock. Tracy McGrady, Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter and Shaquille O Neal all will be remembered long after they hang up their sneakers. If anyone remembers Travis Knight, it will be for his girly do. In 2025, if someone smiles at the mention of Mark Madsen, chances are he s visualizing Mad Dog bustin loose in his doofus victory dance. Now that could wind up in the Hall of Fame. Isn t it just a little bit suspicious that the creme of the USA s latest Caucasian crop, Wally Szczerbiak, has a foreign-sounding name? The best of the rest, Keith Van Horn and Brad Miller, are pale imitations of their forebears— solid pros, but hardly reminiscent of Barry or Big Red. Some in today s generation don t even merit the old race-tainted compliment heady. Last season, I saw Van Horn and Fred The Mayor Hoiberg foul up something so simple as the intentionally missed free throw. Neither realized that, for the ball to be active after a miss, the shot must draw iron. They just banged the shot hard off the board, a violation that automatically gave the ball to the other team.
This plague of hoop mediocrity is not a white thing writ large. If it were, it would transcend national boundaries. But there s this 25-year-old All-Star who wears sunscreen in summer and would likely sport a championship ring if he hadn t sprained his ankle last spring: Peja Stojakovic, the pride of Yugoslavia. His Sacramento teammates include the best passing center in the game, fellow countryman Vlade Divac, and versatile Turk Hidayet Turkoglu. Another young superstar, Dallas s Dirk Nowitzki, hails from Germany. His All-Star teammate, playmaker Steve Nash, is a hot-shooting hoser who was born in South Africa and raised in the Great White North (a.k.a. Canada). What about the 21-year-old string bean who late last season stuffed Shaq twice in the same game? That s Utah s Andrei Kirilenko, Russian born and bred. Seattle s high-flying, do-everything, 21-year-old forward? Vladimir Radmanovic. You go, Yugo! Runaway 2002 Rookie of the Year? The Grizzlies silky Spaniard, pallid Pau Gasol. Best white center of the past dozen years? No, not Will Perdue. Lithe Lithuanian Arvydas Sabonis. Some say that in his lean-and-healthy prime (which, alas, he spent in Europe), Sabonis was the caliber of Shaq, Kareem and Hakeem the Dream. Get the picture? Foreign lands don t produce great white hopes. They produce players — great athletes with great skills. Not so long ago, so too did white America.
Why can t we now? Have we grown soft? Did our best talent get sidetracked by dot.com mania? Are there 6-10 dudes with unlimited ability hanging out at Starbucks rather than the local gym? What about diet? Too much junk food and too many keggers? You can t be like Mike if you eat like Shaq and drink like Barkley. What about white flight from the cities? Being the H-O-R-S-E champ of your gated community is all well and good, but it s a far cry from competin in the hood. All are factors, but surely the biggest is the disappearing family farms. Once upon a time they dotted the landscape, and farm boys grew into men who kicked butt in every major sport. They threw harder, ran faster and jumped higher, and they had a natural farm-boy strength that transferred to the playing field or court far more effectively than sterile, iron-pumped muscle. Unfortunately, yesterday s hardscrabble farm boy is today s suburban slob. A hard day for him is an all-nighter at his Play Station station. Return to the land, long tall honkies. Bale that hay, milk them cows and hammer a hoop above the barn door. Don t show your face in the big city until you ve got corn- and cattle-fed muscles and a game to go with them.
Dennis Hans s essays on basketball — including the styles, rhythms and fundamentals of free-throw shooting — have appeared online at the Sporting News, Slate and The Black World Today. His writings on other topics have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post and Miami Herald, among other outlets. More websites: Just try using google.com and type in the following question.
You will find numerous blogs, yahoo discussion groups and websites devoted to the topic: Are Blacks Better Athletes than Whites?
Smith College – Racial Differences in Sports
Social Science Research Council Forum
Okay, enough background on a topic that is probably not new. Interestingly, I have never heard someone argue that Canadians are physically superior to Americans and that is why they are better than us at hockey.
Well, to make a very long discussion question short…here it goes. What would an anthropologists have to say about all this? In other words, don’t give me your opinion until you at least post an answer to this question. Look back to the discussion on race and ethnicity in Chapter 12.
Also check out the PBS website on Race: The Power of an Illusion and the American Anthropological Association Statement on Race. Both of these sources will be helpful and you should reference them in your answer. Also check out the new American Anthropological Association website that is a traveling museum exhibit on race http://www.understandingrace.org/humvar/skin_01.html.
