GSU’s Coolest Road Trip Of All Time!
If you received this application, it means you may be selected to appear on the “Coolest Road Trip of All-Time.” CRT is a new show where groups of people get $10,000 for a road trip that will be a “unique, life-changing, and eminently watchable experience”. The money you spend will mainly go towards two things: your daily expenses (hotel and food) and your vehicle (rental and gas). Plan carefully. Groups must plan to spend at least $9500 of the money, or they will not be considered.
The possibilities for your trip are limited only by your ability to budget the money. GSU can drive its production vans anywhere in North America and has relationships with gas stations, hotels, and restaurants to provide you with what you need to finish your journey. You can take as many stops as you wish as long as you start and finish in Lawrenceville, GA. You could take a trip as short as 1 week or as long as 31 Days. You can use the money on a solo drive from the beaches of Cancun to the Mountains of Alaska and stop by California on your way. The trip cannot go across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe, or across any other body of water, because a “Road Trip” needs to take place on an actual road, not a boat. You can also use your money to take up to 7 of your friends on a lavish trip up and down the Jersey Shore.
GSU wants to support an impressive and detailed trip, and one of the most important things to show, is that you can manage the money well. That means you need your trip to fall between $9,500 and $10,000. As long as the ideas are well thought out, GSU will consider any proposal.
Research Paper on a staffing current event
Research Paper
Print
Read the information and instructions for the research paper carefully. If you need help with topics, notify your instructor as soon as possible. You are not required to select a topic from the Topic Suggestions list but should have your topic approved by the instruction by the end of week 4. The paper is shorter than a typical graduate school paper specifically because of the annotated bibliography. Please read these instructions to understand how to do an annotated bibliography as it is a part of the grade.
Research Paper – DUE 4/2/18
Current Events Paper
Your research assignment for this class will be to choose a staffing current events topic to research. There are three parts to the assignment:
PART 1:
- The paper itself (not including the bibliography) should be 4-6, double-spaced pages, prepared in Word.
- The topic must be directly related to a specific issue covered in the course material or related to selection or recruitment.
- A list of suggested topics are provided but you may choose another topic PROVIDED YOU GET APPROVAL NO LATER THAN WEEK 4 OF THE COURSE.
- In addition to usual requirements for academic grammar and format, including use of the APA 6th edition, students will use appropriate terminology and syntax to produce work rivaling professional quality.
PART 2:
The paper will include an annotated bibliography with a minimum of 10 books, magazines and/or journal references on their topic.
- At least half of the sources are to be no more than two years old. Emphasis must be placed on current events topics that directly the human resource staffing and recruiting function, so several references used should be dated within the last 18 months.
- At least one reference must provide a theoretical framework to support key points made in the body of the paper.
- Not more than two academic textbooks will be counted in the total number of references for credit. In addition to writing style, intellectual rigor will be assessed by the variety, depth and professional nature of the sources cited (i.e. professional magazines and journals will score higher than general interest sources and unsupported Internet items.
- YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY LOSE ONE LETTER GRADE FOR FAILING TO SUBMIT AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY.
PART 3:
The cover of the research paper should include a one page Executive Summary of your research that will not be included in the page number count for the paper.
- The Executive Summary should assume that you are presenting your work to the CEO of your company and should be written with that level of professional quality.
- The summary should not just define what your topic is but should clearly state a synopsis of what you found and your own analysis of the research.
- You should assume that the CEO would not want to read the entire paper and will instead want a summary of your research along with your recommendations for your organization based on what you found.
The rubric for Written Assignments is available in the Course Content area for this assignment.
Directions
- Use the UMUC Information and Library Services online database collections to search for relevant articles related to your position using the link http://www.umuc.edu/library.
- Your final paper should be 4 – 6 double-spaced pages, prepared in Word, along with an additional Executive Summary as your cover page. You must have a minimum of 10 sources no less than two scholarly journals included. Sources should not be more than 10 years old and at least half should be not more than 2 years old. All citations and references should be formatted in accordance with APA 6th edition guidelines.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
- Should be at least 1 page but no more than 2 pages, double-spaced (in addition to the 4-6 pages of your research).
- Should be directed at the CEO – THIS IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU FOCUS ON YOUR AUDIENCE!!
- Grammar and writing count!!
- Accuracy is essential because decisions will be made based on your summary by a CEO who may not have read your original paper.
- The summary should include a concise statement of the conclusion you reached after conducting your analysis and/or research. For example, if you are conducting research on the impact of social media on recruiting, you may conclude to the CEO that several forms of social media you found in your research are used in your industry and should be used at your company to remain competitive in your recruiting efforts.

Peer Discussion 1 (H. Simonds)
Milestones
There are a couple of methods to test Cognitive milestones. What are cognitive milestones? Cherry (2017) mentions cognitive milestones are based on a child’s ability to think, learn and solve problems. Cherry (2017) also mentions that an example of this is an infant learning how to respond to facial expressions and a preschooler learning the alphabet (Cherry 2017). There are many different cognitive skills for each age. Accoring to Broderick (2014) “Newborn-1 month facial expressions, 1-3 months is coos and grunts, 3-5 months is smiles and shows interest in favorite people, 6-7 months is babbling, 9-12 months is reaches or points to indicate desired object and responds to simple requests, 13-18 months 50 words for familiar actions, 18-24 months increases vocabulary rapidly 3 words a day, 2-3 years speaks clearly enough to be understood by family members”(Broderick 2014 p.101). These are just a few examples of cognitive skills.
Testing
A couple of tests for cognitive milestones are scaffolding and object permanence. Berk (2015) mentions that the potential development refers to a range of tasks that the child cannot handle doing alone just yet but can do with the help of someone who is skilled enough to do it. Think about how a sensitive you are anoter adult introduces a child to a new activity. You or another adult pick a task that the child can master but that is challenging enough that the child cannot do it by his/herself. You or another adult guides and supports, adjusting the level of support offered to fit the child’s current level of performance. As the child joins in the interaction and picks up mental strategies, her competence increases, and the adult steps back, permitting the child to take more responsibility for the task. This is a form of teaching known as scaffolding (Berk 2015 p. 222).
According to Gross (2012) “One of the best-known examples of the development of sensorimotor intelligence is object permanence, Piaget’s term for infants’ gradually developing understanding that objects continue to exist even when they are not in sensory or motor contact with them. Piaget tested object permanence by placing an ordinary object (his pocketwatch) under a blanket. He noted that, unless some part of the watch remained visible, Stage 3 infants typically failed to lift up the blanket and retrieve the hidden object”(Gross 2012 p. 204).
The Global Harmonization System of Classification and Labeling of Chemical Substances (GHS)
1. The Global Harmonization System of Classification and Labeling of Chemical Substances (GHS) has been adopted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT).
a. What is the GHS?
b. Why was the GHS developed?
c. Describe the GHS classification system?
d. What is the format for the GHS Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?
e. In your opinion, what are the benefits and drawbacks of this system?
Your response must be at least 75 words in length.
2. A recent industrial facility released lead into the surrounding soil. Soil sampling results indicated the area impacted with lead above action levels is 30 feet by 55 feet. The depth of the lead contamination plume is three feet below ground surface. The land owner wanted to clean this site for future development. Using your textbook, answer the questions below to help you prepare a cost estimate for this portion of the project. Your solutions and any assumptions to justify your estimate must be shown.
a. What is the chemical symbol of lead, and what group/family does it belong to?
b. Solve for the minimum volume of soil that will be excavated in cubic yards?
c. If each dump truck can transport 18 cubic yards, determine how many dump trucks loads will be transported? For calculation purposes, add a 15% “fluff factor” (add to the volume that will be transported).
d. If the bulk density of soil is 1350 kg/m3 (84.3 lb/ft3), solve for the weight of the soil that will be transported to a disposal site in kilograms.
Your total response to parts a-d must be at least 75 words in length.
3. The United Nations Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) was developed to promote the sound management of chemicals. This is an agreed upon management approach, but regulatory authorities in countries adopting the GHS will implement the system according to their own regulatory processes. After reflecting on the aspects of chemical management that the GHS system covers, describe how you believe the GHS system will affect you or others in your field as you perform your various job functions. Your journal entry must be at least 200 words. No references or citations are necessary.

Should the drinking age be lowered to 18
Should the Drinking Age Be Lowered?
My issue with lowering the drinking age is simple it shouldn’t be lowered matter of fact it should be higher. I believe they should have more security guards around places that sell alcoholic beverages, and they should be even stricter on who they allow to buy theses beverages. Why? Because not only are the young adults getting their hands on these alcoholic beverages, but some how they are also being provided to middle and high school students. We as their older generation should take a stand not because we don’t want them to have fun, but because we care about our younger generation.
We should try to protect our youth they are not mature enough to handle the excitement that comes along with drinking. I can truly say that if we lower the drinking age then the world could only image the catastrophes that we are going to endure. I believe that we should hear more about students graduating then having funerals. The legal age for drinking now is 21 years old and yet we have experienced more underage drinking fatalities than anything else, so let’s not bury our children lets protect them by making the age to drink higher.
- Allowing 18- to 20-year-olds to drink alcohol in regulated environments with supervision would decrease unsafe drinking activity.
- What’s interesting or helpful about this view?
The most interesting thing is they believe that it will decrease unsafe drinking activities.
- What would I notice if I believed this view?
I would notice that more young adults drinking in bars and restaurants
- In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?”
This Idea might be true under the condition that the young adults knew how to control their self while being under the influence.
- There are fewer drunk driving traffic accidents and fatalities in many countries with MLDA of 18.
- What’s interesting or helpful about this view?
What’s interesting is that statistics is trying to compare the 1980s to the 2000 century people then were extremely different then now.
- What would I notice if I believed this view?
I would notice more maturity from the young adults that would understand drinking and driving is against the law. I would also notice less fatal accidents and more graduates.
- In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?”
This would be considered true if this was the 1980s
- Drinking alcohol is an enjoyable activity.
- What’s interesting or helpful about this view?
The most interesting part about this view is that they think we as people are trying to prevent 18-20-year old’s from enjoying the activity of drinking.
- What would I notice if I believed this view?
I would probably notice more parties or more young adults at bars having fun
- In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?”
This whole statement is true drinking is an enjoyable activity especially when you know when and where to enjoy it.
