Creating an Argument: The Electoral College

This week we learned about the presidency, the powers of the presidency, and the unique way our president is elected via the Electoral College. In this assignment you will be guided in creating a complete argument regarding whether or not you think the Electoral College should be kept or eliminated.
This activity will be useful practice in how to create and present and thoughtful argument. The ability to create and communicate a thoughtful argument will help you out in future studies and in any career.
Your essay must be at least 500 words long.
Follow these steps to create an argument in the form of an essay:
Step 1: In one or two very clear sentences state whether or not you think the Electoral College should be kept or eliminated. This is called writing a thesis statement.
Step 2: In three paragraphs describing three (3) arguments that support your position regarding the Electoral College. Give each argument one paragraph. Do not just list three arguments in support of your position regarding the Electoral College. You must tell the reader why each of your three arguments supports your position on the Electoral College.
Step 3: In three paragraphs describe three (3) arguments that go against your position regarding the Electoral College. This is called addressing counterarguments. Give each counterargument one paragraph. Describe the counterargument and then tell the reader of your essay why that counterargument should be dismissed.
Step 4: Write one paragraph concluding your essay. Restate your initial position on the Electoral College. And review the one or two arguments that you found to be the most compelling in support of your position.
Step 5: Write a reference list. In any good argument you will present your ideas but then include evidence from credible external sources to support your ideas. Always include a reference list.
In outline form your paper should look like this.

  1. Introduction: Thesis statement of your position regarding the Electoral College.
  2. Three arguments supporting your position.
    1. Describe argument 1 and why it supports your position.
    2. Describe argument 2 and why it supports your position.
    3. Describe argument 3 and why it supports your position.
  3. Three counter arguments opposing your position.
    1. Describe counter argument 1 and why it is not sufficient.
    2. Describe counter argument 2 and why it is not sufficient.
    3. Describe counter argument 3 and why it is not sufficient.
  4. Conclusion paragraph.

Please note: APA formatting and citations rules apply to this and all essays in this course.
As with all weekly written assignments, submit your work as an attached file. Double-space your paper and use 12 point Times New Roman as your font.

Reading Journal Assignment

Reading Journal Assignment
The backbone of this course is the reading journal you will keep throughout, with entries for each assigned set of readings (so two entries per week). Entries should be completed by class time on the day the assigned readings are due.
Each journal entry should be at least 400-500 words, and ideally should not exceed 1,000 words. While your writing may be less formal or structured than in a typical college paper, your train of thought should be clear and expressed in complete sentences and paragraphs. No in-text citations or bibliography is needed, but when referring to a specific quote, claim or anecdote, do give the page number.

Make sure to leave enough time so that, after you do each day’s readings, you can sit down and spend at least half an hour reflecting–on paper–about what you’ve just read. Don’t feel you have to come to any hard and fast conclusions; instead think of this as exploratory writing, a chance to record your initial reactions and insights. This should, however, not be in outline or ‘note’ format, but should be connected prose. I think you’ll find that the very act of putting your ideas into full sentences will make you see more connections and possibilities in the text you’ve just read than merely jotting down scattered notes does. If the reading has been very complicated, you may want to begin by summarizing the main ideas or arguments, or any key facts or anecdotes, in order to sort out the information covered. But you should not stop there. Go on to tell me what you think of what you’ve read– try to make sense of it in light of what you’ve read or previously known about the subject. Some specific questions you might answer are:

· What connections to previous reading or information do you see in this material? Does it alter earlier opinions you may have formed? Does it deepen your understanding of the subject? You can think in terms of what we are learning about “Islam” from the reading, but also in terms of what we learn as anthropologists interested in human social and cultural life in general. What anthropological concepts or themes that are relevant to the reading? Do you note interesting comparisons with other cultural contexts?

· What did you not understand? Were there any unfamiliar words or references? What else would you need to know in order to make sense of the author’s arguments or the ethnographic vignettes presented? What things do you hope will be explained further as you read more or hear more in class?

· Would you argue with the author on any points? Can you imagine others who would? Do you think the author is ignoring anything vital or misrepresenting reality in any way? Does this seem to be a conscious or unconscious choice?

· Have you had any personal experience with the subject that makes you see it in a different light? Have you talked with anyone else who has?

· What seem to be the major concepts key terms in this piece of reading? How important are they likely to be in the course in the long run? What significance might they have for people outside of this course or this discipline?

These are just a few of the hundreds of questions you can ask of your reading. The main point of this kind of writing is to use it to take some time to reflect and to examine the reading in a more thoughtful and rigorous way than we do when we read casually. But at the same time this should allow you to do freer, more creative writing than the focused, structured essays teachers may usually ask you to write. In this writing it may help sometimes to think of yourself as talking back to me (the instructor) or to the author you’ve just read.

Evaluation:

Good journal entries will do more than summarize the claims or report on the facts covered in the readings: they will engage thoughtfully, critically and/or creatively with the ideas and information and above all will make connections—between different ethnographic anecdotes or cases, between data and ideas, between different readings or between what you are learning in the course and what you knew previously (including what you know about popular images and understandings of the subject).

I will read and respond to your journals once a week for the first three weeks of the course, and then at three-week intervals after that. These journals represent a significant portion of the writing and thinking you’ll be doing in the course, so you will get credit for them. I will evaluate them as follows:

· Journal entries that are adequate in length (at least 400 words), show evidence of familiarity with the day’s readings, and demonstrate even a modest degree of thoughtful engagement with the reading will automatically receive a +, which indicates a score equivalent to a B+ or 85%.

· Entries that show more than a minimum of rigorous, critical or creative/insightful engagement with the material will receive a ++ (A-) or +++ (A+).

· Entries that are minimal in length, do not demonstrate adequate thought or effort, or that suggest that the student has not done the reading beyond the first few pages will receive a Ö, or a score of 50%.

· Missing entries will receive a 0. More than two missed entries will affect your final grade for the reading journal.

The Training Program (Fabrics, Inc.)

The Training Program (Fabrics, Inc.)

Presented at the end of chapters 4, 5, 8 and 9 of the Blanchard and Thacker (2013) text, are examples of what would be done in a real situation regarding a small business that requested training (these sections can be found in the electronic text by going to the “Summary” section for each chapter and scrolling down). Review the Fabrics Inc. examples at the end of these chapters. These sections are labeled, “The Training Program (Fabrics, Inc.)”. Blanchard and Thacker (2013) have demonstrated the phases of the Training Process Model, from the needs analysis to evaluation. Notice how the phases build on one another.
Chapter 4 presents the needs analysis, the beginning of a step-by-step process for developing a training program, for this small fabrications company. Chapter 5 continues with a description of the Fabrics, Inc., training program identifying the training design. Chapter 8 provides examples of some of the training outputs, starting with the instructor’s manual and elaborates on the development and implementation steps. Finally, Chapter 9 examines the evaluation phase of the Fabrics, Inc. training.
The paper should use APA formatted headings to identify each of the following required sections:

  • Abstract
  • Background of Fabrics, Inc.
  • Needs Analysis
  • Training Design
  • Development and Implementation
  • Evaluation of Training
  • Conclusion
  • References

The paper should be 2,000 to 2,500 words in length (excluding the title, abstract, and reference page) and respond to the following prompts for each phase of the training process model:
Needs Analysis (Chapter 4)
Critique the organizational analysis conducted for Fabrics, Inc. and determine if there are other questions that should have been asked. Review the operational analysis done through the interview. Note that it was not completed. Generate some of the other questions that should be asked.
Training Design (Chapter 5)
In the design phase of Fabrics, Inc. Blanchard and Thacker (2013) only developed objectives for conflict resolution. Choose one of the other training requirements and develop three to four learning objectives. Critique the design component and identify areas that were not addressed satisfactorily.
Development and Implementation (Chapter 8)
Note that there is no discussion of Fabrics, Inc. in the development or implementation aspects of the training. List and describe additional training modules that could be developed based on the training objectives that were developed in the design phase of Fabrics, Inc.
Evaluation of Training (Chapter 9)
Evaluate the two evaluation instruments used in the Fabrics, Inc. case. Discuss how the evaluation results should be used. Be sure to address internal and external validity of the measurements.

Globalization

Directions:
Think about what you have read and seen in the news on globalization. Consider the fact that the clothing we wear, the cars that we drive, the cell phones we use to communicate and the computers we use to work, are each likely to have been manufactured in whole or in part in different parts of the world. While there are still companies and firms that maintain local and national borders, it is almost unheard of in the 21st century that an industry does not maintain an international strategic position.
From an executive’s position, identify and explain at least three challenges and opportunities that might face an international executive over the next five years. Provide possible solutions of how the executive might address these issues in order for their firm to maintain a competitive advantage.
Prepare a 4-6 page paper that describes the impact of globalization on U.S. businesses. In your analysis, please include information about the impact of at least four economic drivers that might impact globalization.

Health Care Leadership–Revising Organizational Culture

500 words & references need completed by the end of the day 01/30 please.
Recently it was announced that two major hospital systems would be merging their services in to one entity. Both are comprised of multiple hospital units and specialty clinics. While on the surface, this has been touted as an economical move with substantial savings to both parties and the potential to solidify their market share, there are as yet many barriers to overcome.
For instance, one system has its roots as a Catholic entity, while the other began with its origins as a Jewish facility.
The medical staff is divided on whether the merger is good for patients and their practices. Both groups of employees are understandably unsettled as it is uncertain who of the senior administrative staff will remain. The organizational culture of both institutions is also of major concern.
Given these circumstances, what form or model(s) of leadership would you bring to bear? Describe in detail the steps you would take to redirect the mission and vision of this new emerging entity.
