Problem Solving: Popular Beliefs and Evidence

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.
Problem Solving: Popular Beliefs and Evidence
In this discussion forum, you will assess the validity of popular assumptions and beliefs about problem solving. Please note that your answers need be supported by scientific evidence. For your initial post, complete the steps below:
Watch the video, Rory Sutherland: Sweat the Small Stuff, on how simplicity can benefit problem solving.
Select one of the following topics:
Laypersons and scientists alike often report that after having tried to solve a problem for an entire day, “sleeping on it” led to a solution. Does sleep indeed promote problem solving?
Laypersons and scientists alike often report that a solution to a problem may come to mind after having taken a break from thinking about the problem. Does incubation really work?
Select a theoretical view/model of problem solving (e.g., Gestalt psychology, information processing approach, etc.). What is the evidence that supports it? What evidence, if any, does not fit the model?
Are experts better at solving problems than non-experts? If so, what is responsible for experts’ superior performance? Is their superiority general or limited to their field of expertise?
Are there individual differences in problem-solving abilities? For instance, is working memory’s capacity linked to one’s ability to solve problems?
After you select a topic, access the Ashford University Library and Google Scholar and review the literature on problem solving. Then select a research article that answers the questions related to the selected topic. Finally, share the evidence you have uncovered and your critical examination of such evidence with the class. Your initial post must be a minimum of 300 words.
Guided Response: Offer a substantial response to at least two other posts written by members of the class. Respond to a post that discusses a different topic from the one that you have selected, a post that discusses the same topic, and an inquiry from your instructor. Keep in mind that both your peers and your instructor are members of the class. In your answers, discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the content of each post. Be sure that you cite scientific evidence to support your views. A minimum of 200 words should be used for each response to other posts.

16) Recognize that crisis may indicate an underlying substance     abuse problem, and may represent a window of opportunity for change.
86) Make constructive therapeutic responses when the client’s     behavior is inconsistent with stated recovery goals.

Which stage of the Transtheoretical Model of Change do you think Sean is in? Explain your answer.

Sean is drunk most of the time he is home. He rarely attends his children’s sporting events or school activities and defaults on most of his responsibilities for helping to care for the home. In spite of the fact that he does not try to participate in these family activities, he tells his wife that he feels guilty about his lack of involvement.
Answer the following:
Which stage of the Transtheoretical Model of Change do you think Sean is in? Explain your answer.
Do you believe that Sean feels guilty? Why or why not?
How would you describe the tension Sean lives with wanting to do something he considers important but feeling he is unable to do it?
What can Sean’s wife and children do to begin their own process of healing?  Should they wait until Sean seeks treatment?  Why or why not?

Prior to engaging in this discussion, please read chapters five and six in your e-book and review the Instructor Guidance. If your last name begins with A-M you will discuss the theory of constructivism and its relationship to learning. If your last name begins with N-Z, you will discuss humanism and its relationship to learning psychology.

•Constructivists suggest that a person’s reality is unique from others and thus, effects what, how, and how effective knowledge is acquired. This is suggested to be affected by numerous variables such as culture, past experiences, and past knowledge.
•Humanism posits a purposefully person-centered approach to learning, that includes personal growth, focus on self-development, and personal needs.
Consider the following as you discuss:
•Do you feel that learning, from the approach of a human’s potential, rather than from a purely content driven (you need to know this) perspective, is a viable way to approach investigating “how we learn”? Why or why not?
•Waldorf Education posits that it is a school founded on humanism ideologies. After reading the content, do you agree with their position? Would this type of education work with adults (yourself)?
•Describe a personal example of experiential learning that you have experienced.
•How can the areas of motivation and needs potentially increase effective learning, as suggested by humanistic ideologies?
•How do the variables of organismic integration theory (OIT) reflect the humanistic model?

Mock Research Proposal

Please Help

PY3350 Research Methods
James C. Guy, Ph.D.
FINAL PAPER
(Mock Research Proposal)
You should write an original Mock Research Proposal, similar to what you might submit for a grant. It should be well done, but as an entry level research methods course, it does not have to be elaborate. It can be a qualitative or a quantitative design. The paper must be in correct APA format, and include the title and reference pages with all required parts, and an abstract which of course goes on its own page. The body should include all the major parts of a research proposal with correct headings. Also include the other headings that would be included in a research presentation / article after the research is conducted. The wording is sometimes a bit different, and some qualitative designs may use slightly different headings, but should generally include the following headings and sections:
· Literature Review (or Background to the Study)
· Methodology to include information and subheadings for Participants and Procedures as well as ethical protections
· Results
· Discussion
· Conclusion
The paper should include an introduction, but remember that in APA you do not use a heading labeled “introduction”. See the sample papers in the Manual, textbook, and template for how this is done.
The first paragraph or two is your introduction and sets the stage for your paper.
The literature review must be well-written, but need not be complete and lengthy as would be expected in an actual proposal or a higher level research course. But, it must be at least one page in length.
The Methodology section should show that you know to include the required parts including the procedures, measures, ethics, sampling procedures, etc. However, just do the best you can on selecting the correct measures. You will not be graded on accuracy of the statistics / measures as long as it is at least somewhat logical.
The Results, Discussion, and Conclusion will not be known in a proposal (though some would have a Conclusion). So, just format these headings correctly but leave the sections under them blank. You just need to show that you know these should be included in a finished research report. You could include “anticipated findings” somewhere in these section if not elsewhere.
Finally, remember to include your hypothesis and/or research questions somewhere in your paper. Some include it in the introduction. Others may include it in the methodology. Where you put it is up to you, but do be sure it can be clearly identified.
Use your textbook and manual to help you further with the parts of the paper, and see the feedback from your previous Preliminary Research assignment.
Do a good job on this assignment as it counts for a lot of points, and is a summary of what you have learned in the course.
Submit your completed paper in Bb as a Word/PC attachment.
