(Discussion post 1) Chapters 5 and 6 in your text discuss several iconic experiments in memory that have helped us learn about our memory system. After reading about the experiments, select one of the optional articles featured in the module resources and provide a brief critique of the experiment and its application to the real world. You should be sure to discuss any problems with the methodology of the experiment or any problems with the interpretations of the results. Additionally, consider how the findings of the study can be applied to real-world issues. How could findings from the experiment be applied to develop policies or procedures to improve human memory in different professional settings? What strengths or weaknesses in human memory do the experiments highlight that would be important for professional disciplines? (The three optional articles to choose from are attached to this post.)
(Discussion post 2) Mental imagery is an exciting area of research because it has been used in many real-world applications, including improving sports performance, counseling, promoting well-being, and improving memory. Locate an article on mental imagery published within the past five years. Provide a brief summary and critique of the article. Next, discuss the importance and applications of the article’s findings in terms of contemporary issues. How could you use information from the article to improve cognition in different scenarios and professional settings?
(Discussion post 3) Over the years, psychologists have proposed a number of different theories to describe the interactions between language and other types of cognition. This week’s readings expose you to a number of these theories. Some theories suggest that language shapes the way we think about things. Others suggest that individuals are able to change their thought patterns by learning different languages. Consider the influence of language on human cognition in professional settings by discussing how language promotes or limits communication between people. Finally, discuss how cognition could be improved or problems could be solved by examining language.
(Discussion post 4) Throughout the course, you have been exposed to theories in cognitive psychology and have been asked to use those theories to solve problems and evaluate human cognition. Based on what you have learned, discuss the role you think cognitive psychology plays in understanding human behavior and interactions. How has this field advanced our understanding of human cognition and behavior? How has cognitive psychology helped us to create socially responsible strategies for improving cognition? What directions do you think the field will take next, and how will that research be important in solving contemporary problems or real-world issues?

For this task, you will debate whether controlled substance should be legalized (if currently illegal to buy or use), or made available as over the counter drugs (if currently only used with a prescription).
For your debate, choose a specific drug from one of the four drug categories listed above (CNS depressants, CNS stimulants, marijuana, or hallucinogens). Present the pros and cons of making such a substance available freely or on a controlled basis. In preparing your debate, be sure to mention the following points:
Identify the psychopharmacological properties of the substance.
Determine how widely the substance is used.
Determine if the substance is addictive.
Indicate any side effects for this substance.
Identify the effects of criminalizing the substance.
Recognize any problems that might be caused or prevented by decriminalizing the substance.
Determine how this substance can be beneficial once it can be legally purchased without a prescription.
Indicate how this drug might be detrimental if it can be legally purchased without a prescription.
Identify any social implications that can emerge if this substance can be legally purchased.
Prepare your debate in transcript form and allow each debater to make a statement. Be sure to allow time for each to make a rebuttal of the other’s statement. Use critical thinking skills to follow the rules for a logical debate. Support the points in the debate with reference to at least three scholarly references. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles, may be included.

Read Harnessing the Science of Persuasion (Cialdini, 2001).  Consider this source as you complete the Assignment.

  1. Part I:  Examples
    1. Assemble advertisements, commercials, or personal experiences/observations that illustrate each of the six fundamental principles identified in Cialdini (2001).  Do not use examples from your textbook.
      • Submit “Part I”, a separate document with the examples you located.  Preferably, copy and paste print media examples, along with proper citation information; links are acceptable for broadcast or electronic media (television, internet, etc.).  If neither images nor links are available (e.g., in the case of a personal observation or experience), a brief description will suffice.  Label your examples clearly and provide a one paragraph explanation for each.
  2. Part II:  A Social Psychological Analysis of _______
    1. Explain in-depth how social psychological principles of persuasion are relevant for one of your selected advertisements, citing relevant research.  Relate characteristics of the communicator, the message, and the target audience. 
    2. Formulate a plan to intentionally enhance persuasiveness.  What are various alternative techniques one might employ effectively?
      • Submit “Part II”, structured as a paper and written in APA style.

A Love/Hate Relationship

To prepare for this discussion, please read Chapter 9 of your textbook (Feenstra, 2013).  In addition, read One Hundred Years of Group Research: Introduction to the Special Issue (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (Forsyth, 2000).  Finally, review Instructor Guidance and Announcements.  In this discussion, you will consider your own experiences in a group setting.  Be sure to use your own academic voice (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and apply in-text citations (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.appropriately throughout your post.

  1. Do you love group work or hate it?  Formulate your position by synthesizing your own experiences, relating specific course concepts and research findings that support the merit of your view. 
    • For example, if you believe “two heads are better than one”, you might summarize work on the value of brainstorming.  If, however, you think “too many cooks spoil the broth”, you might relate the negative impact of groupthink.  Any concept in the chapter is appropriate to utilize for this discussion, and you may discuss more than one if applicable.
  2. Explain how you might use this knowledge to influence other members and improve the overall function of a group in which you have been/are currently/will be a member.
