In Oedipus, we know that Oedipus went to the oracle at Delphi to learn about himself, his past, and his future. 4/ Dante’s Inferno Discussion


· Dante claimed that The Inferno traced “the state of souls after death.” Can you find examples that contradict Dante’s claim? In other words, can you point out specific details that show that Dante was concerned with events and people in his own time?

· Dante creates a type of punishment for each sin that he calls a contrapasso. This means a punishment of poetic justice. The fate of the fortune tellers provides one example of a contrapasso. In the Inferno, those who told the future have their heads on backwards so that now they can only look behind themselves. That type of creative punishment related to what Dante considered an earthly sin, is a contrapasso. Describe any other contrapasso that you found in the reading.

· Comment on the weather as it is described in at least 2 different levels in the Inferno. What might the weather conditions mean in your opinion?

INSTRUCTIONS: Below are several questions about “THE LOVESONG OF J. ALFRED PRUFROCK.” The clues to answer these questions are hidden somewhere in the poem. Some of the questions are direct; other questions will stretch your imagination.
Remember the poem is written from a 1st person, stream-of-consciousness perspective, so you’ll have to wade through some seemingly random thoughts to find the answers!
Answer any 3 of the 7 questions below. As a class we’ll “unpuzzle” this puzzling poem:
1. How old (approximately) is Prufrock? What physical traits do we know that he has (these traits may give us clues that will allow us to guess his age)?
2. What qualities of big city life are suggested in the poem? How are these qualities linked to Prufrock’s mood?
3. Close readers of this poem have suggested that Prufrock may be attending a social gathering or a party of some kind. Eliot gives us a clue because he uses the same line to interrupt Prufrock’s stream-of-consciousness; this interruption is a clue that tells us where Prufrock might be. What is the line that is repeated to produce this effect and where might he be?
4. What item has Prufrock used to “measure out his life?” Think about this curious detail: What conclusion can we draw about Prufrock based upon this information?
5. In the beginning of the poem (in the first 45 lines), Prufrock seems to be reassuring himself that he has plenty of something. What does he think that he has plenty of, and do you believe him? Does he believe himself?
6. A “feminine rhyme” occurs when the last two syllables of a pair of lines rhyme (e.g. “is it” & “visit”)? Find the lines ending in “ices” and “crisis”. What does Prufrock appear to be struggling with in these two lines?
7. Now that you have answered #6, you may notice that Prufrock asked himself a question. What is the answer to that question based on the 20 lines or so that follow his self-inquiry?

Prepare: In this discussion post you will be considering the role of land degradation, desertification, and biodiversity loss in an ecosystem. Land degradation can be caused by extreme weather conditions such as drought and coastal surges. However, it is also caused by human activities that degrade the productivity of the soil and impact the production of ecosystem goods and services (Land degradation and desertification, n.d.).  In the past century, the growing pressures of agricultural and livestock production, urbanization, and deforestation have significantly contributed to land degradation and desertification (Land degradation and desertification, n.d.). As you are reading the reports and watching the movie take notes on how these social, economic, and policy factors contribute to land degradation and desertification.
Land degradation and desertification also impacts human health and well-being. The degradation of land puts considerable stress of food-producing systems which often leads to malnutrition. Water scarcity and air pollutants are also associated with land degradation. As you learned in Week Two, the lack of clean water and poor hygiene can cause higher incidences of water- and food-borne diseases (Land degradation and desertification, n.d.). Likewise, in Week One you learned that wind erosion and air pollutants cause higher rates of respiratory diseases in populations. Dryland climates, created through land degradation and desertification, lead to poverty, emigration, and overall reduced human well-being. The migration of populations from dryland areas to more hospitable areas often leads to the spread of infectious diseases.
Land degradation and desertification also contributes to biodiversity loss. Biodiversity is an integral part of functioning ecosystems and affects food production. Biophysical diversity of vegetation ensures sustainable productivity of soils. It is also instrumental in soil conservation and in the regulation of rainfall infiltration, surface run-off, and local climate (Land degradation and desertification, n.d.). A variety of foods is needed to maintain human health. The nutritional composition between foods varies significantly and biodiversity loss affects the micronutrient availability in a person’s diet (Biodiversity, n.d.). In essence, our health is connected to the health of different species and on the natural functioning of its ecosystems (Chivian and Bernstein, pg 5). Enhanced food production including the use of fertilizer and pesticides as well as the introduction of crop varieties and cropping patterns significantly contributes to biodiversity loss (Biodiversity, n.d.).  Biodiversity is also important for medical and pharmacological discoveries. A loss in biodiversity could limit the discovery of new medical treatments and the creation of new drugs (Biodiversity, n.d.).  Traditional medicines are an important part of health care around the world and communities rely on natural resources collected from ecosystems for medicine (Biodiversity, n.d.).
This is a basic summary of the consequences to human health and well-being that result from land degradation, desertification, and biodiversity loss within an ecosystem. You will want to pay close attention to the movie and your readings, however, as you will need to discuss the factors that lead to an ecosystem collapse and the related health consequences in more detail in your discussion post.

In the first paragraph of your post consider the social, economic, and political factors that led to collapse of the Aral Sea ecosystem and the resultant effect on human health and well-being within the community shown in the video.
In the second paragraph summarize the ecological (including biodiversity) and health problems within the community that resulted from the collapse of the Aral Sea. In your response you should consider access to food and the availability of health care systems and drugs. Explain the role economics and policy decisions have on the response to the health crisis in this region.

preliminary proposal

For this assignment, submit the start of your research proposal that you will turn in in Module 8.  It must be submitted as a Word document.  Your start should be in APA format with a title page, body, and reference page.  You can include an abstract if you want, but it is normally written at the end of a project or proposal as a summary.  Your preliminary proposal should include:  The title (and title page)  A body with at least one page of the literature review (or background to the study depending on what you call it).  A reference page showing all the references used in your literature review start.    Your paper will be graded and the format and content reviewed with feedback to help you make sure you are doing it correctly.  Be sure to open the graded assignment after it is graded to correct any problems or areas needing improvement.  Also, be sure to submit the assignment before the deadline in order to get feedback for your final proposal.  Late submitted assignments may not be graded in sufficient time to review.  You are encouraged to use the attached template to help you correctly format your paper.

Military organizations

Some groups and organizations tend to want to present research findings only when it agrees with their beliefs or is favorable to them.  Militaries are often known to practice this, allowing results to be public only after they approve them.  Religious groups may also attempt to deny access to their members, or prevent research findings from being made public if the findings disagree with their religious beliefs.    Of course, this is not good research practice.  In fact, by making findings public, it gives others the opportunity to analyze the findings and validate the procedures.  Remember, many of the errors in research are due more to the interpretation of findings rather than the procedures themselves.  We should also remember that any research can only tell us a small piece of knowledge and can in fact be incorrect in its design and results.  Humans are imperfect in our research efforts, even though we want to pursue perfection in what we do. For these reasons, we know research is imperfect, but so are our efforts to understand scripture.      For this discussion, imagine you have just conducted what you believe is a well-designed ground breaking research.  You have conducted the research and analyzed your findings.  You can think in generalities, or think of some specific topic area where this could happen.  If your findings seemed to contradict what you believed about scripture, how would you reconcile that?  It’s not as easy as saying, “I would just follow the scriptures.”  First, because you could be wrong in your understanding of scripture, or you could have made some error in the research design.  Second, because now that you have discovered something in your research, there is some level of obligation to present it to the public, even though you don’t like or agree with the findings.  How would you reconcile this in your mind?  What actions might it lead you to take?  And how would you present the research to the public in light of the apparent discrepancy?    Be sure to use depth of thought in your discussion and thorough (at least 250 words).  Also include at least two replies to other students that contribute to the discussion (usually at least 100 words).  Be respectful of other’s views even though you are free to disagree with them.
