Psychoanalytic, Marxist and Feminist Criticism

+2000 words, MLA Format, Double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 point font. All citations must use parenthetical citation according to the MLA 8th ed. Include a “Works Cited” page, as well.
1. Choose any text or texts (a novel, a film, a series of advertisements, a cartoon, a genre of music, etc.) and apply Psychoanalytic, Marxist and Feminist Criticism. Your goal is to make an argument as to what your chosen text/s can mean from these three different “lenses.”
2. You can analyze a relatively straightforward piece of popular culture or a complex piece of art. You can analyze the NFL, children’s books, beer ads or War and Peace.  All of these are examples of “texts” because they are cultural productions. In a literary studies course, we analyze poems, short stories, novels, plays, and films.
3.  It does not matter to me what text you choose. Make sure you choose a text with which you are extremely familiar.
4. Again, choose one text or a series of texts and apply the three theories we’ve studied so far. Argue what the text means from these three different lenses. Be objective. Save those earned observations and opinions for your conclusion paragraph. Disney films are perfect texts for this kind of thing if you are confused or if this is outside your comfort zone.
Recap:
Choose one text or a series of texts, and read it/them from a Psychoanalytic, Marxist, and Feminist lens. You are making an argument about what the text means from these three different perspectives. In short, what would a Psychoanalytic critic argue, what would a Marxist critic argue, and what would a Feminist critic argue about your chosen text/s?

VISUAL ANALYSIS

Major Paper 1: Visual Analysis
Assignment & Purpose
Write an essay that analyzes the rhetoric of visual arguments (paintings, photographs, advertisements, political cartoons, etc.). Your overall goal in this paper is to construct and support a thesis that evaluates the quality of the arguments being made in your piece/s of visual rhetoric (how visual images communicate messages).
In order to do this, your paper should place the visual arguments in a context for your intended readers, identify the audiences being targeted, and identify the claims made. Most importantly though, you should explain how those claims are “appealing” to the audience, focusing on why the appeals in the argument are or are not persuasive and why that might be interesting or unusual. As you work on this assignment, make sure that you are going beyond merely summarizing the obvious in the imagery, but instead analyze and interpret the deeper meaning that the visual piece is trying to convey.
The purpose of this assignment is to help you practice the basics of analysis in a creative way by exploring images which exhibit complexity and rhetorical purpose. In writing this essay, you will be more aware of the cultural, social, and political influences of visual sources. This assignment, ideally, will allow you to explore the implications of visuals through design, symbolism, cultural implications, social critique, etc.

Evaluation Criteria
See Grading Rubric on class website
The following categories determine the grade for each submitted paper: Meets Assignment, Introduction, Thesis, Focus on Thesis, Content, Analysis, Organization, Audience, Closing, Format, and Mechanics. Not all of these elements are weighted the same, but all are part of the final grade for your paper. rhetoric, argument, and persuasive communication,

Teachers insturctions : For this introductory assignment, please write about a time when you had to be convincing. Much of this course will discuss aspects of rhetoric, argument, and persuasive communication, so this personal insight connects to our larger subject area.
For the writing itself, compose a 300-500 word piece that discusses a moment when you had to prove your case in some way. Perhaps it was interviewing for a job; maybe it was lobbying your parent for something you wanted; maybe it was stating your perspective on a difficult situation; or an attempt, through communication, to mediate or correct some wrong. What strategies did your use? How did you establish your credibility? What was important to know about your listener/audience? What was the result of your efforts? Did you learn anything through this experience?

Should your company enter Asia or not? If so, how will it need to address intercultural communications in its staff, partnerships, suppliers, products, services and customers?

PERSUASIVE PAPER
Business communication involves persuading diverse internal and external stakeholders about the validity, importance, correctness and/or appropriateness of approaches, processes and recommendations.  Students will prepare a paper including recommendations based on information found in the course materials and through research.

BACKGROUND
You work as R&D Group Manager at a US-based business applications company.  It produces products that are sought after by small to medium sized businesses in the USA because the software allows them to compete on level footing with major multinational corporations.

Company CEO Mary Murphy has just returned from a relaxing and much needed vacation to Asia where she visited Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China.  She noticed a lot of growth and change happening there and wonders whether the company has done too little to enter and build market share there.  So she’s asked you to look into it and present your findings and recommendations to her decision-making team.

ASSIGNMENT

Should your company enter Asia or not? If so, how will it need to address intercultural communications in its staff, partnerships, suppliers, products, services and customers?Write a 5-7 page persuasive paper using APA guidelines for submittal to your company’s CEO and her team of executives who are in charge of Research + Development (“R+D”), Production, Marketing + Sales, and Logistics. Research and write-up your findings about the ways in which your company should approach Asia from an intercultural perspective.  In particular, since the company is US-based – what may it need to do to address the different cultures in the areas of:

  • R+D
  • Production
  • Marketing + Sales
  • Logistics

You may either consider it as (1) an Asia Regional opportunity; or (2) perhaps better to pick one or more of the countries the CEO visited to help give some specific examples of how intercultural communications and intercultural business thinking may play a role in the Company’s plans to move forward and succeed there.
When discussing your Company – please explain what customers you are targeting and the types of solutions you intend to offer.  How must these targets and solutions be adapted using intercultural communication techniques internally with your employees and externally with your clients?

CEO Mary Murphy and her top level management team are really looking forward to hearing your ideas about this.  Remember to demonstrate that you’ve done your research, analyzed it and come to some recommendations that are well-grounded in your analysis.

abortion

Ernest Hemingway, “Hills Like White Elephants”
Answers to questions which could be asked about the story could be the basis of your thesis:
What is the effect on the reader of not ever reading the word “abortion” in this short story?
What are the motivations of the two characters? Does either character change in this story?
How does the setting of the story affect or help reveal the meaning of the conflict between the man and the woman?
Prototypes of thesis sentences:
Although the story doesn’t say for sure, the woman in the story, Jig, will probably ___________________ when she gets to the city as can be seen from her actions and dialogue in the story when she ___________________________.
The American is very focused on persuading Jig to have an abortion, but if she chooses not to, he will probably _____________________________, as we can see from his actions and dialogue.
The train station represents __________________________, while the landscape on one side with the river, trees, and fields show ________________________________ and the landscape on the other side with the hills like white elephants reveal __________________________.
Of course, I would recommend that you come up with your own thesis sentence so that you say exactly what you want your reader to know about the story and the topic raised in it. Use examples from the story to develop and show the points you are making. Look at your thesis to make sure you are taking a stance, making an assertion about the story which is a debatable point, and make sure you introduce your key points which will be covered in the essay.
Annotated Bibliography
An annotated bibliography must be added after the Works Cited page. The annotated bibliography will consist of both your primary and your secondary source.
For the secondary source, search the library catalog (a link to library resources is on the course home page), and find an article on the short story you are analyzing, or on the topic you are analyzing about that short story. Provide the MLA-formatted citation. Under that, give an annotation with the following elements:
Write a summary statement of the source, followed by an in-text, parenthetical citation (author’s name).
Give a statement of why the article is useful in your analysis.
Finally, give a statement about why your reader should trust that this is an academically credible source.
The annotation for the primary source (the short story) may just be a statement that it is the primary source for this paper (Faulkner) or (Hemingway). The list of citations must in alphabetical order, according to the authors’ last names. Ex. Hemingway then Massman or Abrams then Faulkner.
You are required to reference and discuss one secondary source in this essay. An annotated bibliography of this secondary source must be included in the essay along with a Works Cited page. The essay should be formatted in MLA style and be 3-4 pages in length, not including the annotated bibliography.
My first Paragraph that I provided in a discussion :
Some women are left the thought of losing a companion because of them not wanting the baby. How can one continue to go forward with a relationship when you both want two different things? How can something so sensitive make the one you love to want to get rid of it? Will she be happy with the decision she makes? In Hills like White Elephant, the young lady faces all of these decisions. Although the story doesn’t say for sure, the women in the story will probably not have an abortion when she gets to the next city as can be seen from her actions and dialogue in the story.

task committee report: issue and solutions

ASSIGNMENT 1
TASK FORCE COMMITTEE REPORT:
ISSUE AND SOLUTIONS
Due Week 4, worth 150 points
Leaders address issues and propose solutions. As a leader, you’ll need to stay on top of events that may facilitate or hinder productivity. You must create and implement solutions to address these issues.
This assignment exposes you to complex modern organizational challenges. The solutions you devise should reflect your learning and research of organiza- tional and individual influences in the workplace.

The organization should be one with which you are familiar — where you work now or have worked previously (business, nonprofit, government, or military). You may also consider other organizations in the news, such as Macy’s for the retail industry, United for the airline industry, Wells Fargo for the banking industry, etc. The focus is on finding solutions, but you should be somewhat familiar with the organization or industry.
2. Plan your research
Use research from the course textbook, company website, business websites (CNBC, Bloomberg, etc.), resources from the Strayer Library, or outside resources to develop solutions to the following questions as they relate to corporate culture, managing diversity, leading teamwork, and developing motivational strategies to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives. Your recommendations must be fully articulated and supported with appropriate detail and sources. Note: Wikipedia and web-based blogs do not qualify as credible resources.

Provide a brief description of the organization you selected. Present the organizational issue that adversely affected productivity and that you, the task force leader, will review and resolve.
2. Analyze Current Corporate Culture
How has the current corporate culture facilitated the development of the current issue? Research the organization, dig into the culture, and analyze how it contributed to this issue. Hint: Review the mission and vision statements as well as the corporate website.
3. Identify Areas of Weakness
What are the organization’s areas of weakness? Using your research on organizational behavior approaches to corporate culture, diversity, teamwork, and motivational strategies, identify areas of weakness.
4. Propose Solutions
What organizational practices would you modify? What solutions should your task force recommend to management? As the leader of the task force, identify the suggestions you would present to the organization’s leadership with regard to modifying current organizational practices to resolve the issue.
5. Prepare an Executive Summary
Summarize your recommendations and research findings in a one-page executive summary that you will present to the CEO in an upcoming executive meeting.
