Literary Analysis For this assignment, you will be required to offer analysis on a work of fiction. You may choose from the following two options. Your analysis can focus in on any topic you wish to discuss, but you must offer a thesis statement that will serve as the basis for your analysis. When looking at a literary work, you may choose to examine elements such as: How does a character develop and why? What are the moral implications of the character’s actions? What the primary message or theme is of the story and how/why that is relevant to contemporary society? How does setting influence the action or serve as a primary character or the story? How does the story relate to modern interpretations or current societal trends? What does a particular literary critic think of the piece and argue against him or her. Regardless of your thesis, you must be sure to have a central argument. Without this, you will not have a basis for your essay. Your Literary Analysis may include as many outside sources as you feel are relevant to your topic, but limit your use of them to no more than three. Option I Select a short-story to write about. You will not have restrictions in selecting a short-story, but you will not be allowed to select a novel. You may choose to select a graphic novel, but if you do you must select an individual graphic novel rather than a specific series. For example, do not examine X-Men as a whole, but rather a particular story portrayed in one graphic novel. Option II Select a film version of any book. Be sure to pick a movie based upon a book and not the reverse. Your analysis will consist of the same set of criteria, but you will focus exclusively on the film. Essay requirements: 12 pt. font – double spaced – Times New Roman MLA style Minimum 4 pages in length. Maximum 5 pages in length. Be sure to include textual evidence to support your claim in this Literary Analysis. Your Literary Analysis must include one outside academic source.
