Handout for second essay assignment
Please write a 3-4 page paper (double-spaced, with 12 point font and no more than 1″ margins) on the question below.
The essay should also include a bibliography (a Works Cited page) which is in addition to the 3-4 pages of text you’ll be writing. Please follow the same MLA guidelines for formatting a Works Cited and in-text parenthetical citations as you did in the first essay (go back and refer to the first essay handout, if you need to review the citation guidelines).
Writing Objectives
Please be sure that your essay includes a thesis (a main argument or statement of opinion) in the introductory paragraph. The introduction should also include the main points (at least three!) that you’re going to develop in the body of the essay (so, it has a sort of “road map” of what you’re going to cover). Each of those main points should be supported and developed using quotations or examples from the readings or from observations you’ve made in your own life.
A good way to begin is to make a list of points that you have observed. Derive your thesis or the main point you wish to make from that list. Brainstorm. What other points on the list seem to support the main argument (the thesis) that you have come up with? Then go to the readings and find supporting quotations for these points, and develop these in the body paragraphs. Essays should be a minimum of five paragraphs but your essay can certainly include more body paragraphs.
This essay will be graded on its clarity, its arguments and its organization. As I said above, be sure to include a THESIS in the introductory paragraph and develop good examples and arguments to support that thesis. Each paragraph should include a topic sentence that is the subject of that paragraph. You should also include a strong conclusion that draws on the points you present in the body. The conclusion should be a separate paragraph that restates the thesis and drives your main arguments home.
Be sure to cite ALL of your primary and secondary sources using in-text citations within parentheses, as you did for your first essay. Any time you incorporate a quotation or a specific example, statistic, etc., you should include a citation to show the source where you got that information.
Essay Topic
Most of the readings we’ve completed so far discuss the impact of stereotypes that are rooted in identities of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, or class stereotypes (and many readings discussed identities that were rooted in the “intersections” or overlaps between one or more of those identities).
These are the readings you have to use for this paper-
-Race, Class and Gender: Article 37, Tiffany Manuel and Ruth Enid Zambrana, “Exploring the Intersections of Race, Ethnicity, and Class on Maternity Leave Decisions,” pp.307-313.
-Article 35, “Gender Matters. So Do Race and Class,” Sandra E. Weissinger, pp. 285-293.
-Race, Class and Gender: Article 54, “The Color of Justice,” Michelle Alexander, pp. 419-423.
-Article 13, “Closing the Wealth Gap: A Review of Racial and Ethnic Inequalities in Homeownership.”
In this paper please select at least THREE of the readings and compare and contrast how these stereotypes are created, what they consist of, and the impact that they have, according to the authors of the readings you’ve chosen. You may also include observations from your own experience, but you should be SURE to discuss at least three of the readings for the course, as well. You can discuss more than three, if you want to.
You can choose any three, and if you wanted to, you could compare the creation and impact of stereotypes across categories: that is, you could compare how racial stereotypes operate in conjunction with stereotypes rooted in ideas about gender or how race and sexual orientation intersect in the construction of stereotypes. Or you could discuss how class identities intersect with notions of gender in the creation of particular stereotypes.
OR you could choose three readings that are similar, and which allow you to discuss one particular sort of stereotype in depth. For example, you could look at stereotyping: as it affects men from different racial or ethnic backgrounds; the stereotyping of poor/working class people; the stereotyping women/women’s bodies; or the stereotyping of people with different sexual orientations/identities. Again, these are simply suggestions. Come up with your own–just make sure you look three authors to support your conclusions. This paper is a little trickier than you think so be warned
Think about the idea of “self-fulfilling nature of stereotypes/ internalization of racism/or stereotypes.” What coping mechanisms do people devise to deal with stereotyping? Can you give specific examples from the readings you chose? Do not give me summaries of the readings (we’ve done that!). Instead of summarizing, you should analyze: what authors agree with each other? Which of them disagree? Why? I don’t want book reports but critiques and analysis of the works at hand comparing and contrasting the authors’ key points throughout the paper, along with your own thoughts on these issues.

History
Welcome to our next discussion about Greek architecture. Although the days of Classical Greece are long past, we still experience elements of Greek architecture in the Neoclassical styles of our banks, libraries, government buildings, universities, entertainment & performance venues.
In this practice discussion, you will apply ideas from the "How to Analyze Architecture" worksheet to at least two different temples discussed in this module, but you can pick the temples you want to discuss!
The goal of this discussion is to demonstrate that you can:
1. Identify and use architectural terminology to describe the architectural features of at least two different temples of your choice from this module
2. Apply ideas from the required worksheet to analyze the temples of your choice from this module
3. Document your research process and cite according to MLA guidelines, as needed
Any amount of plagiarized material in writing or video is not accepted and will result in an F "0" points for this assignment. You do not need to submit your responses to turnitin.com but note I will if I have any concerns about the academic integrity of your response.
Directions: Pick at least two different Temples from the list below: (Please include picture of the temple in your post so we all can be reminded of what it looks like)
Temple of Hera I “Basilica”, Paestum, Italy, 550 BC
Temple of Aphaia, Aegina, Greece, 500-490 BC
Temple of Hera II, Paestum, Italy, 460 BC
Parthenon, by Iktinos and Kallikrates, on the Acropolis, Athens, 447-438 BC
Temple of Athena Nike, by Kallikrates, on the Acropolis, Athens, 427-424 BC
Erechtheion, on the Acropolis, Athens, 421-05 BC
Now practice applying ideas from the topics below, to your temple. It’s OK to respond point by point, posting more frequent responses throughout the week, and demonstrate how the ideas from the worksheet connects to your temple. Do your best to answer as many of the points on the worksheet as you can, but if in your research you find some of the questions cannot be answered, it is OK to skip the question and move on to the next one.
How to analyze architecture questions:
(It is OK to copy and paste the questions and respond point by point, as you’ve done in the previous modules. Questions in red are questions I think you should be able to respond to.
Who is the architect, patron, or client?
How does the building reflect the architect’s style? The patron’s wishes? (It’s OK to skip if not known)
What is the function of the building? Civic? Religious? Public? Private? Commercial? Residential? How does the building reveal its function?
What is the scale of the building in comparison to humans? Surrounding buildings?
In what context was this structure built? How is the context reflected in the structure? Consider social, political, economic, or religious factors.
How long did it take to build the structure?
Which parts of the building seem to be emphasized?
How do the parts of the building relate to other parts of the building?
How does the building interact with the environment in which it is located?
Does it incorporate similar materials as nearby programs?
Does it draw upon nearby historical styles or influences?
Does it react against historical precedence?
What shapes are repeated throughout the program? Geometric shapes? Organic shapes?
How ornamental is the facade of the building?
How is interior space defined?
What features demarcate interior space?
Is interior open and airy?
Is interior space compartmentalized?
How does light contribute to the overall effect of the building?
How do the materials contribute to the overall effect of the building?
What architectural or stylistic terminology can be used to describe features of the building?
What technology was used to build the structure? How does this technology reflect the societal development?
How do overall features of the building create a unique user experience?
It might be a good idea to post additional visuals that help to show what the various architectural components of a Greek Temple are. You should demonstrate that you KNOW architectural features of the temple you pick! Just don’t post a picture only.
Submission directions:
1. Post your response directly in this discussion, and include images, too. Do not include your response as a word doc and as an attachment, like docx, or doc files. No attachments.
2. If you prefer, you may respond in the form of a video using the AAU video tool as an alternative to writing your response. If you respond through video, please note the responses are limited to 5 minute segments, so it is OK to submit two, 5 video segments, if needed. Your response should not be more than 10 minutes, however! A 5 to 10 minute video would suffice.
The goal of this discussion is to demonstrate that you can:
1. Identify and use architectural terminology to describe the temple of your choice from this module
2. Apply ideas from the required worksheet to analyze the temple of your choice from this module
3. Document your research process and cite according to MLA guidelines, as needed
please use MLA research paper from web!!!
also include at least 2 images.
Any amount of plagiarized material in writing or video is not accepted and will result in an F "0" points for this assignment. You do not need to submit your responses to turnitin.com but note I will if I have any concerns about the academic integrity of your response.
In this discussion, demonstrate that you are practicing USING the required worksheet to analyze the temple you picked from this module. Post visuals, but use your words to describe what you see, and always paraphrase researched information and cite it following MLA standards.
Art (Fine arts, Performing arts)
Overview
The enduring relevance of the humanities is that they encourage us to consider a number of “big ideas.” What is culture? How do we go about studying it? What is the relationship between cultural artifacts and the culture in which they are created? What is the relationship between artists and the creators of “cultural artifacts” and the things they create? How is human meaning generated through cultural creations? We humans seem driven to express and create in our search to understand and be understood.
You will complete two related projects in this course that will be turned in separately. In Project 1, you will choose an artifact of human creative expression and respond to a series of questions about it to complete an artifact chart. In Project 2, you will use the insights gained from completing Project 1 to answer a series of short-answer responses about human expression.
For Project 1, you will choose an artifact of human creative expression from the world around you. This artifact can take any form and can be from any physical modality (visual, aural, tactile, etc.). The key is that you choose a form of expression you might experience any day that intrigues you and makes you want to know more about it. Once you have chosen your artifact, you will respond to the elements below on the provided artifact chart, culminating in questions about the artifact and what it might represent. You will use the insights you gain here when completing Project 2.
Project 1 will assess the following course outcomes, which you focus on throughout Themes 1 and 2:
Develop questions about fundamental aspects of human culture that inform personal assumptions, beliefs, and values using evidence from cultural artifacts and systems
Determine fundamental approaches to studying the humanities in addressing questions about how cultural artifacts and the culture they are created in have influenced each other
Prompt
Choose an artifact from the world around you that you could encounter any day. Use the provided artifact chart to think deeply about the artifact and its representation of human creative expression. Your responses should be recorded on the artifact chart.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
I. Describe the artifact in detail. For instance, how would you describe it to someone who could not see it?
II. Choose elements of the artifact that you believe are most important to how you experience it and explain why. For instance, what particularly catches
your senses or makes you want to keep experiencing it? Does the choice of medium impact your experience?
III. State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artifact and the success of the creator in achieving the purpose. For instance, what
message do you believe the creator is trying to express, and is that message successfully expressed?
IV. Discuss how the artifact reflects the culture (or context) in which it exists. Be sure to address what aspects of culture have relevance for this artifact: politics, history, religion, social perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on. In other words, how do the artifact and its culture interrelate? For instance, how would a particular form of body modification reflect the urban culture in which you encountered it?
V. Use the artifact to discuss how acts of creative expression impact and are impacted by the people and situations that surround it. How might the artifact and the person who created it have impacted each other? For instance, how might the geographic location where the artifact was made, the materials used to create the artifact, the medium of the creative process, or the environment where the artifact is displayed influence the creator’s life or future creative work? How might the artifact and the culture or context in which it was created have impacted each other? For instance, does the artifact add to the understanding of the culture from which it was created? What contributions does it make to continuing on a dialogue about that culture and the importance of its artifacts?
VI. Pose questions you have after thinking deeply about this artifact. What more do you want to know regarding:
a. The relationship between human culture and expression?
b. Your personal assumptions about artifacts of this sort and why they exist?
c. How your values have shaped and are shaped by your expression and that of others?
d. The relationship between the possible intent of the creator and your own interpretation of its meaning?
VII. Speculate on how you would go about answering these questions. For instance, what sorts of things would you study about these kinds of artifacts and
their contexts that might begin addressing these questions?
Rubric
Guidelines for Submission: Type your responses to the prompt on the Artifact Chart. Bullet points and other notations are acceptable provided the
requirements of the prompt are met.

History
Attached you will find “The Destructive Male,” a speech by Stanton. While labor is going through its
upheaval during the Gilded Age, progressive minded individuals are working towards other aspects of
civil rights.
The Seneca Falls convention in 1848 was the first of its kind, with over 200 women gathering to discuss
their current plight and to foment for their rights, Stanton was one of the organizers of the event. Chief
among their concerns was the right to vote. Suffrage became the rallying cry from which all other civil
rights issues became centered.
While thousands of women flocked to the cause, the women’s rights movement was hampered for a
number of reasons. These included resistance from conservative women, difficulty in getting men on
board, and the idea that people of color and the poor were often left out of the proceedings and public
marches.
As you red Stanton’s work, ask yourself how women approached things differently than labor, what
were the hoped for outcomes? What does Stanton see as the biggest stumbling block to overcome?
What stigma is attached to the idea of suffrage?
Please write a brief summary of differences you observe between the suffrage movement and the labor
movement which are happening at the same time in the United States. This will be graded and count as
an in class assignment.
