Life Planning and Career Development

. The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate your understanding of cultural competence, your limitations as they relate to career counseling, and your plan to develop the needed skills.
For this assignment, choose a cultural group of which you are not a member and create a persona for a fictitious member of that group. Address the following elements in your assignment:
Describe a fictitious persona from your chosen cultural group, that you will use as your client or student. For example, if you are an African-American male you may choose to write about a person who identifies as female, Navajo American Indian, married with five children, living on a reservation, forty years old with a high school education. Analyze how societal norms such as gender, age, culture, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics may have influenced your client’s career development. You need to select a minimum of three characteristics or diversity issues. How might these factors impact the person’s relationships with others and life roles? What strategies would you use? Assess how biases and assumptions can impact the career counseling process both from your perspective as the counselor and from the perspective of the client or student. Self-assess your own biases and describe how you will work to decrease these biases when working with diverse populations.

Sally, an accounting technician, works on the sales ledger in Big Foods, a food wholesaler. One of its customers, Fare Foods, is owned by Sally’s brother. Fare Foods has placed a large order and, like all other customers, receives a 2% prompt payment discount on invoices settled within 14 days.
The usual practice within the accounts department, which applies to all customers, is that the date recorded in the sales ledger is the date on which the payment is received in the accounts department (which must always be the same day that payment is received in the post or delivered to the reception desk). However, there are often one or two days between the cheques arriving at Big Foods and their eventual processing. In addition, cheques and cash received by Big Foods are banked only twice per week, on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Sally The 14 day settlement date for the Fare Foods account fell on a Tuesday. It is now 9.15 on the following morning, and Sally has just received the Fare Foods cheque. She decides to record the receipt date in the sales ledger as Tuesday, and she duly processes Fare Foods’ prompt payment discount of 2%. She sees no need to seek authorisation for this, as Fare Foods had the potential to become a very valuable customer.give an account on what shes supposed to do in order for her business to run smoothly

Education Research

Action research that is undertaken in a continuous manner provides many valuable benefits. Schools have long since attempted to address classroom disruptions by those deemed to be students with problem behaviors (). However, through action research, the schools can benefit from evidence based research and findings, which can then be applied in the classroom. As the researcher applies these tactics and approaches, feedback and interventions introduced as improvements can be reported upon, so as to provide useful information to future educators. This will prevent students from being excluded (Singer & Butler, 1987) and allow the teacher to address such classroom disruptions, instead of soliciting or introducing new elements such as the principle, parents, or school counselors.
The action research of what has been learned through study in this semester will provide numerous benefits that improve overall student learning. This will occur because educators will be able to affect real and positive change in the lives of their students, even those deemed as being disruptive, based on past standards of evaluation. As such, implementation of this action research will allow for creation of best practices that include skills and training for teachers that will enable them to intervene with these children early on, as opposed to waiting till many of the issues have manifested to concerning levels,
Most importantly, the aim of educational institutions and educators, to allow the best possible environment for the students to learn, develop, and grow, and through it, meet their full potential, will be realized. This approach through implementation of action research will improve the classroom environment for all students, but will especially lower barriers to learning faced by those students, that have been deemed as disruptive.

Action Research

How the continuous improvement efforts through the use of action research can inform progress of a school/community/organization?
Educators and leaders alike are always looking for ways to improve student learning. One way to provide this improvement is through the use of action research. A problem is identified with a hypothesis of the possible outcomes following data and the outcomes of strategies of what works and what doesn’t work. In a book review of Action research for school leaders (by by Dean T. Spaulding and John Falco, Allyn and Bacon, Boston, Mass., 2013, 176 ), Berkowitz (2012) indicates: “Action research has become an essential tool for those engaged in the development of focused whole-school efforts to improve teaching and learning. It is imperative that we encourage our school leaders to foster building-level action research teams focused on closing the achievement gap while simultaneously increasing learning for all”. The overall goal is to provide the highest quality of teaching to improve student leaning in schools and/or an educational organization.
How the action research implemented in this study will generally improve student learning?
In my study, the research action plan questions being investigated are:
What are today’s students test-taking skills? Are mini quizzes more effective than end of semester classes more effective for meeting the learning objectives for the course? What are the alternative assignments and classroom assignments that equal to standardized tests? The overall goal is to determine how students can demonstrate their learning without taking standardized summative test. By breaking down units with creative assignments, students will be able to attain and retain information for the long haul to put to use in the real world of work. By proving that student learning take place with more hands-on activities, maybe this will shed some light to the stake holders that standardized testing may not be the best option to determine student learning. Berkowitz, P. (2012) describes that ‘“School-level Action Research”… building or school-level action research teams frequently lead to more energized teaching and increased student enjoyment, engagement and learning. This can occur whether the teams are homogenously (same grade level or same subject matter) or heterogeneously (multi-grade or multi-disciplinary) grouped”.
Studies have found that students’ knowledge need to be tested and measured. Teachers are held under this system for their evaluation based upon improvement in test scores. Some states are using an approach to use innovative ways to determine student knowledge with alternatives to standardized testing. The results of student learning must be proven for the state holders for funding (Goldstein, 1990). Students need to be prepared for the 21 Century as they are competing with the world. Activities conducted in the classroom will provide students with the necessary skills they will need to compete with other students entering into the job market. As jobs require skills may require technology knowledge, students will be introduced with assignments that will incorporate technology in their coursework. With this subject proven with action research, then standardized testing may be a thing of the past as alternative knowledge gathering may be incorporated with innovative learning activities.

LRE and FAPE

Please read the article Least restrictive environment: How do we prepare both our special educators and our general educators to comply with the provision? (Keuhne, 1998).
According to IDEA, what do the terms Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) and Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) mean? How does inclusion fit into the big picture of LRE? Further, also discuss the legal ramifications of the LRE provision as mandated by IDEA, the relative and dynamic properties of LRE, and the collaborative dimension of implementing LRE for students in special education. Lastly, discuss any of your own personal experiences in being a part of an IEP team for a student where LRE was determined or any insights you might have on ensuring LRE and FAPE for all students.
Guided Response: Respond to at least two classmates’ by Day 7. Discuss any of your own personal insights on collaborating effectively to determine the LRE for a student or ask for clarification from another classmate using an example or illustration to assert your own perspective.

Special Education Law Review

Using the information from the readings for this week, prepare a three- to four-page written paper summarizing IDEA, NCLB, ADA, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Discuss the following elements:
The purpose or main function of each law and how they relate to special education in public schools
The six principles of IDEA
The six principles of NCLB
The important elements of Section 504 and ADA. Discuss the difference between Section 504 and IDEA
The significance of educators having knowledge of these laws when educating students with disabilities The paper must be three to four pages in length, not including title and reference pages, and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least two scholarly sources in addition to the textbook to support your claims. Cite your sources within the text of your paper and on the references page. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, located within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar in your online course.

Compare and Contrast: LD and CD Consider the characteristics of a student with a learning disability (LD) and a student with a communication disorder (CD). Compare and contrast the following aspects of LD and CD:
Definition of each disability Characteristics of each disability Evaluation of each disability area Research-based effective instructional strategies, supports, and services What are your experiences with working with a student or individual with a learning disability or communication disorder? Have you found the characteristics discussed in the readings to be accurate? What further suggestions might you have for teaching students with LD?
Guided Response: Review the responses of several classmates and respond to at least two by discussing any similar experiences you have had in working with students with LD or CD. Provide any additional insights that you found in the readings that you feel relate to your classmates’ responses.

Journal

This week we have discussed learning disabilities and communication disorders. As you may have noticed, most students with these disabilities are in the general education classroom either part of, or most of, the school day. What is your comfort level with teaching students with learning disabilities and/or communication disorders in the general education setting? What challenges do you think you might experience? What actions can you take to mitigate these potential challenges?
