Admiralty Islands (PNG) – Flooding
Assessment item 1
Community analysis and interaction consequences
Value: 50%
Due date: 11-Aug-2017
Return date: 01-Sep-2017
Length: 5000 words
Submission method options
EASTS (online)
Task
Select a community with which to conduct your community analysis. As per Topic 4 in your Study Guide, your community needs to be large enough to enable you to address all the assessment task features. It also needs to be small enough to be manageable and to ensure that your analysis does not become so broad as to be of no use.
It is helpful to select a community that is within your reach and easily accessible to you, for instance the one you live in or work in.
After working through Topics 1 to 6 you are to conduct a community analysis in which you are to:
Part 1 Describe your community in terms of socio-economic and physical characteristics
Part 2 Explain the interaction consequences of an emergency event
Part 3 List the recovery needs of your community
Part 1 Describe Your Community 30 marks
Introduction
Introduce your selected community in a brief overview (i.e. geography, history, climate, and so on.)
Social-economic characteristics
Describe the socio-economic characteristics of your selected community You may describe the economic characteristics separately if you wish.
Physical characteristics
Describe the physical characteristics of your selected community
Part 2 Interaction Consequences 35 marks
In Part 2 you are asked to consider the interaction of your chosen community with either a specific threat (for example a flood) or following Mark Sullivan’s paper, a generic threat. On the one hand you have your community and on the other hand a potential threat – put them together, and what do you get? What are the interaction consequences?
Having summarised your chosen community you should now describe the interaction consequences of a threat/threats impacting on that community. You may be flexible with your approach to this section and select the headings that best suit your community and threat. If you are stuck, you may like to consider the following prompts:
1. Identify the threat/hazard/emergency situation.
2. Describe the implications of the threat on your community, highlighting potential problems and opportunities:
• Area affected
• People affected
• Property affected
• Facilities and services affected
• Anything else of relevance that may be affected
3. What conclusions can you draw to complete this section, regarding your chosen community’s capabilities, both social and physical?
Alternatively, you could consider writing about the interaction consequences through some of the following prompts:
• Consequences arising from previous emergencies
• Societal consequences and community expectations
• Combined geographical and infrastructure consequences
• Consequences of building design
and so on
You are encouraged to be creative and design your own structure; these are suggestions to get you thinking.
As you complete this assignment bear in mind that in Assessment Task 2 you will consider the recovery strategies that flow from the interaction consequences you are now describing.
Part 3 Recovery Needs and Conclusion 25 marks
List the recovery needs of your community as a result of the emergency event.
Construct a Conclusion which draws together the main points of your community, the interaction consequences of an emergency event and the needs that it creates.
Presentation and Referencing 10 marks
Rationale
In order to help plan for the recovery of a community before an emergency event it is important to understand how the community looks and functions under normal circumstances. The purpose of this assignment is to describe your selected community before a disaster strikes, then to envisage the effects of the emergency event on the community (interaction consequences), and lastly to list the needs of your community after the emergency event.
In Assessment Task 2 you will prioritise your list of needs.
Try to picture this assessment task as a table top exercise where you imagine your community (with its socio-economic and physical characteristics, and its current emergency management plans) and then the aftermath – what is destroyed, damaged, disrupted? To what extent? In Assessment Task 2 you will use this community and the interaction consequences you are envisaging now to write effective recovery plans.
Marking criteria
The following marking criteria together with the Assignment Marking Grade Descriptors should be utilised in the construction of your assignment. They will be used to provide feedback on your assignment. Your marks will be allocated according to the Grade Descriptors and how well you address the marking criteria.
Assessment Marking Grade Descriptors
Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security
Criteria Referenced Standards Based Assessment – Articulated Standards
Standards: Generic Descriptors of Quality
Morgan, Chris, et al. The Student Assessment Handbook: New Directions in Traditional and Online Assessment. London: Routledge Falmer, 2004, pp.221-235, suggest grade descriptors applicable for extended tasks in the humanities. They adapt well for the disciplines of Policing, Security and Public Safety. These grade descriptors assess the level of:
• Comprehension of theoretical underpinnings; understanding of concepts and principles;
• Critical understanding of the material
• Range of resources; evidence and depth of reading and research;
• Quality of presentation; clarity of structure; expression and grammar; sustained evidence of correct citation and referencing
• Development and quality of argument; relevance of content; evidence of analysis; critical evaluation; validity of deductions and conclusions;
Pass – PS – Adequate Work (50% – 64%)
• Shows awareness of concepts and theories without explicitly explaining or applying them; evidence of limited understanding of some part of the issues; evidence of willingness to state a position on an issue but limited use of supporting evidence; descriptive rather than theoretical and analytical; presence of some relevant factual knowledge and/or awareness of theoretical issues; some evidence of analysis, but the criteria used are not stated; signs of limited application of new knowledge to new situations
• Dependent of a limited range of resources
• Coherent style and composition; readable
Credit – CR – Above Average Work (65% – 74%)
• Understanding of the major issues in the question demonstrated; recognizes and describes concepts, theories used to explain descriptive material; evidence of an ability – on the basis of evidence – to state a personal position on an issue; evidence of ability to collate information and construct generalisations from it, commenting on the weight of evidence or opinion; evidence of a satisfactory level of analysis and judgement, including a statement of the criteria used; evidence of the application of knowledge to new situations;
• Use of reasonable array of sources in light of the nature of the task and its demand hours; evidence of selection of appropriate material, logical structure, clear argument and a sound overall framework; coherent argument that is focused but could be improved
• Some useful insights
• Clearly written
• Very little sign of imprecise statements.
Distinction – DI – Excellent Work (75% – 84%)
• Evidence of a sound knowledge of relevant theory; understands and compares theories, concepts, ideas accurately and systematically
• Evidence of ability to state and defend a personal position on an issue, on the basis of evidence; evidence of ability to evaluate information and synthesise generalisations from it; sustained arguments, linking empirical detail with theoretical perspectives; makes incisive critical comment on the literature; evidence of a sound level of analysis and judgement, including a justification of the criteria used
• Clear evidence of selection of appropriate material, logical structure and coherent argument; evidence of use of a wide range of resources; evidence of wide reading beyond core subject matter
• Evidence of the application of knowledge to new situations
• Stylish composition; writing provides evidence of knowledge, enthusiasm and control.
High Distinction – HD – Exceptional Work (85% – 100%)
• Originality in synthesis at a high level of consistency through argument
• Mastery of material – material understood, represented accurately in all its complexity, critically appraised, used effectively in the argument
• Extensive range of pertinent sources showing evidence of wide, systematic and creative information retrieval
• Effective and interesting use of English prose
• Thought provoking; the assessor is offered fresh insights into his/her own thinking and dependent on the question would consider the paper as worthy of publication
• Evidence of ability to maintain a personal position in original terms and show a command of the accepted critical positions and of attempts at innovation.
• Higher grades will usually contain the essential elements of lower, but passing, grades. Those elements should be seen as prerequisites to high achievement.
Fail – FL – Unsatisfactory Performance (0% – 49%).
The assignment does not meet the minimum requirements for a pass. For example, one or more of the following:
• At best, some restatement of the question and basic interpretation, but generally only part of the question; misunderstanding of the topic; little or no understanding of issues or concepts; at best, coherent notes appropriate to the question
• At best, evidence of limited mechanical reproduction of material from readings with no interpretation; irrelevant material included; reliance on few resources ; evidence of willingness to state a position on an issue but no, or very limited, use of supporting evidence.
• Unreadable
• Major error of focus
• Incomplete
Presentation

Israel and The Syrian Civil War – Is Israels involvement in the Syrian Civil conflict pro peace or pro Israel?

Seminar Research Dissertation Proposal – (Strategic Studies)

Length: 20,000 words.

  1. NAME

PAUL RYAN

  1. PROPOSED TITLE OF THESIS

“ISRAEL AND THE SYRIAN CIVIL WAR – Is Israel’s involvement in the Syrian regional conflict pro-peace or pro-Israel?”

  1. AREA OF RESEARCH

  • As per the above title this dissertation will look at the current Israeli involvement in cross border operations of both a military and a humanitarian stand point with regards to the Syrian regional and or civil conflict.
  • The study will focus on the period from 2011 to the current date and will look at how Israel has classed its military interests in main land Syria as fair and legitimate and how it has openly engaged its conventional enemy targets in this theatre. The study will look at how Israel has begun to play a part in the support of the growing Anti-Government force within mainland Syria through supplying both military and humanitarian aid across the border.
  • This dissertation will be supported by the fact that the author will be deployed in the theatre of Israel/Syria with the UN during the study. This will significantly aid to the nature of the material being used to create opinion throughout this work. This material will take the form of first-hand experience, perspective and view, conflict and operational observation of the current activity within the studied theatre as well as interviews and more common place study and reference sources.

  1. IMPORTANCE/INTEREST OF THE PROJECT

  • Currently the global standpoint of the Israeli government is that its engagement of military targets in mainland Syria is legitimate given Israel’s concerns over the developing military capability of its main enemy, which is that of the Lebanese based Hezbollah terror organisation. Alongside this Israel has openly engaged, as it would claim, legitimate military targets on Syrian soil on numerous occasions since early 2011. This has also worked alongside its state viewpoint that it holds no view on the Syrian civil war generally and has stated itself as a Neutral onlooker in the conflict.
  • The apparent situation on the ground however has shown that Israel is conducting cross border interaction with anti-government forces and therefore is playing an influencing role on how the regional conflict is evolving. This aspect of the current conflict situation is to be further explored in the dissertation.

  1. RANGE AND TYPE OF SOURCES TO BE USED
  • See initial draft Bibliography attached

  1. ANALYTICAL/EVALUATIVE CONTENT OF THE THESIS
  • What are Israel’s current interests, objectives and Defence policy decisions with regards to its involvement in the Syrian conflict?
  • How is Israel currently affecting the conflict in Syria?
  • How does Israel currently assess the Sunni Extremist threat in Main land Syria as effecting overall Israeli Sovereign security?
  • Does the current IS focussed threat in Iraq, Turkey and Syria play a part in Israel’s current Defence Policy with regards to Syria alone?
  • Is Israel currently trying to affect the influence of external countries such as Russia, Iran, Jordan and the US with regards to their involvement in either cross border operation in the region or indeed with regards to direct involvement in Main land Syrian Civil war activity?
  • How can Israel advance its interests in Syria without opting for direct involvement in events within Syria?
  • Studying how previous conflicts from the early 1960s onwards have perhaps played a part in current Syrian-Israeli relationships and how this factor may be still shaping the two states interaction today.
  • Studying how the relative peace between both Syria and Israel has now been disturbed since 2013 and how that may have disrupted a possible peace agreement long term between the two states.

  1. ANTICIPATED CONCLUSIONS

  • The development of what Israel’s current interests and motivations are for their current involvement in the Syrian conflict.
  • A rounded study on how Israel is factually affecting the conflict in Syria.
  • To show the core lead with regards to the Israeli involvement being that of its focus on the destruction of its Sunni Extremist threat in Main land Syria.
  • A rounded conclusion to the factual effect that Israeli government influence is putting on external global powers with regard to the Syrian conflict.

  1. RESEARCH PLANS
  • Conduct of initial dissertation draft, conduct of research interviews with approved contributors. Development of in depth research and dissertation proposal.
  • The purpose of the research into the dissertation topic is to study the development of Israeli based interaction within the Syrian regional conflict which in part is not being openly admitted to in the global political platform. The research agenda for this topic is to show in part how the effect of external players either openly or otherwise, is creating new issues within the Syrian regional war on a daily basis. The research should give some factual basis to the policy and activity behind these current actions in main land Syria and show how the stand point of global neutrality with regards to the Syrian civil war which is portrayed by many large scale military and political states is not always the full picture of the true level of interaction which a given state are partaking in.
  • Last working day of June for final approval of proposal from research supervisor and SREC. Last working day of July for draft proposal of circa 10,000 word submission to supervisor for directional feedback and re aligning of research topics as necessary. Final draft of submission for last working day of August for final critic and editing to final copy status for last working day of September.

Homicide Investigation Review

Require a native English speaker for the writer, no English second language please
-Feel free to use the sample source at the bottom in the 9 source requirement
-Will upload criteria sheet
-Word limit is 2000 words +/- 10%
-Very important that all points are adhered to throughout, not just the 4 key points
This assessment requires students to write up a review of the homicide investigation process involved in the OJ Simpson Case.
All reviews must address the following key points:
1. Identify the main elements of the investigative process involved in the case.
2. Discuss major flaws, weaknesses or failures that were identified in the police investigative processes which affected the outcome of the case.
3. Discuss critical suggestions for ways in which these investigative failures could have been overcome, and how they could be prevented in the future homicide investigations.
4. Discuss the role of the media in influencing the outcome of the case.
Sources for your essay may include media articles, official reports, court transcripts, scholarly books and articles and/or
relevant statistical analyses.
• To help students get started, an example for each case is provided at the end of this document (these are samples only – you are not required to use them – but they are the kind
of authoritative scholarly reference you should be looking for).
• Each of these cases has been through a criminal trial (and often appeal) process, during which problems with the investigative procedures (police and/or prosecution) have been
widely debated.
• The assessment is in essay form, so your work should have a clear introduction, a body and a conclusion summarising your argument. Headings are allowed in this instance. It is suggested that students set out their work with a brief introductory paragraph, 4 subsections matching the 4 aspects of the set task, and then a final concluding paragraph.
• Your task is simply to develop a narrative based on the four (4) key criteria for this assessment:
1) summarise the crucial elements of the investigative process as relevant to the subsequent trial/appeal proceedings;
2) identify and clearly explain the major errors/flaws/weaknesses in these procedures;
3) come up with well framed and supported recommendations for how such errors might have been avoided (or might be avoided in the future); and
4) discuss how you think the media may have influenced the outcome of the case.
• The investigation review should demonstrate a clear and logical analysis of the particular case, supported by relevant research to explain the analysis and proposed solutions.
• The essay offers you the opportunity to critically analyse a major homicide investigation and to show your understanding of the key issues. Thus, it is expected that your research will be a combination of case-specific materials and scholarly/theoretical sources relevant to homicide offences and investigations more generally.
• Please note that your task is not to decide whether a person is guilty or innocent; nor is it to simply describe the crime and the investigation/court process in the manner of a media article. Your job is to critique the investigation in a formal, thoughtful, scholarly manner and to make clear-eyed recommendations, which are not to be confused with emotive statements about the guilt or innocence of anyone involved. Your inquiry has the luxury of hindsight, so try to use language that acknowledges that.
• Students should take care to meet the criteria for presentation as set out in the Criteria Sheet: professional structure; technical accuracy; consistency of referencing. Abstracts are not required.
• All submissions must be in 12pt font double spaced; leave adequate (3cm) margins for marker comments to be provided.
• Referencing for court cases is as in the following examples:
(In-text)
R v. Doe (2010) OR
(R v. Doe, 2010)
(Reference list)
R v. Doe (2010) No 2 NSWSC 50
• Submissions should feature APA in-text referencing where necessary and each submission requires a reference list. Students should not be using dubious/unverifiable internet sources such as Wikipedia, Murderpedia, Crime Library, Crime Museum, etc. In general, on-line sources (other than official scholarly journals and widely known media publications) should
be assessed critically by students before use to establish their appropriateness.
• Finally, students should NEVER refer to victims, offenders, etc. only by their first (given) names. This is a piece of formal academic writing, and as such the people involved should
be referred to either by their full name (or surname only) or else as victim, offender, witness, and so forth.
