colony update

Colony Update Five You are a state now. You began as a colony and now you are a state in a new country. Sadly, a new country means new problems. How damaged was your state after the Loyalists left? What specific rights did your citizens have, according to your state constitution? Did you agree with the loose control the Articles of Confederation had over the country, or did you support the shift to a strong central government? How did your state deal with the economic problems after the war? (IE – did you raise taxes, did you enforce communal use of goods, did you introduce tariffs?) How did your state react to Shays’ Rebellion? Was your state convinced this rebellion was an indication that things needed to change? If not, was there something else that convinced you – or did your state want to stay with the Articles? When you were presented with the Constitution, did your colony largely support the Federalist or the Anti-Federalists? If you were Federalist, why was their argument more convincing? If you were anti-Federalists, what points did you agree with them on? Now that there was a central government in charge, how did relations between your state and the Native Americans change?

In what free time you have, I ask that you watch TV. Believe me, I know I’m asking a lot, and it may prove difficult and arduous, but sometimes we can get relevant sociological information from television. Anyway, while watching TV, I would like you do so with eye for depictions of gender and race roles and norms. Thus, watch a television program or movie that was filmed before the 1970s (and set in the time of its filming, so no period pieces), and one that was filmed after 2010 (and set in the time of its filming). In a short response (two pages or so), compare and contrast the depiction of gender roles and behaviors. What aspects have remained the same, what has changed? Do you find the changes to be significant? Why or why not? Keep the following in mind while completing the assignment: Be sure to include the details of the programs watched, including the Title and Year of Release. You can provide a brief synopsis of the plot if you think it is necessary, but this isn’t a film review. The goal isn’t to tell me what the program/film was about or whether it was good or bad. Try to rely more on specific examples rather than generalities (e.g. X character always had their eyes downcast when interacting with Y character, instead of X character seemed subservient at times). Regarding gender, it is not necessary to focus strictly on women, but rather the whole range of role and behaviors we deem as either masculine or feminine. Regarding race, feel free to use your discretion in what you choose to focus on.

Learning In America Today

create a paper that addresses the problems that exist with assessing learning in America today. essay should be written in third person only and in the argumentation style. The essay must be 1000+ words. Shorter essays will lose points. Be sure to use textual references to back up your ideas and to use MLA 8 format to cite those textual references in in-text citations and a Works Cited page. Failure to do this will result in a lower grade or a possible plagiarism charge. The assignment requires the use of at least two sources outside our text. It is your responsibility to find the sources. If you are having problems, contact the librarian for help. Topic choices: In his article, “Against School,” John Taylor Gatto quotes Woodrow Wilson (28th president of the United States) who, in 1909, said, “We want one class of persons to have a liberal education, and we want another class of persons, a very much larger class, of necessity, in every society, to forgo the privileges of a liberal education and fit themselves to perform specific difficult manual tasks.” While this statement seems outwardly shocking, there is evidence that this very thing is going on today. Taking Gatto’s article as a starting point, develop an argument that this, indeed, is happening in classrooms all over America in the present day. You must include at least one other essay from our text in your discussion. Two outside sources, minimum, should also be used to create your argument. Alfie Kohn, author of “From Degrading to De-grading,” discusses the pros of eliminating our current grading system. He argues grading actually makes students dumber because it decreases individual inquiry and stresses rote learning. How does this essay relate to Brigid Schulte’s “The Case of the Purloined Paper”? Is plagiarism directly caused by our grading system? Argue for or against this idea using these two articles and at least two outside sources as the basis of your paper. Kristina Rizga, in her article “Everything You’ve Heard About Failing Schools is Wrong” takes a long hard look at how we assess schools in America today. The topic is touched upon in some of the other essays we read for this unit, although perhaps not directly. Choose one or more of those readings, along with Rizga’s, and create a paper that addresses the problems that exist with assessing learning in America today.
