With all of the television channels available and easy access to the internet, you can watch just about anything you want at any time. Earlier in the course you discussed the science involved with technology, but in this Assignment, you will turn the tables and delve into how the media portrays science.
How does a pop culture portrayal of science and scientists impact the average person’s view of what science is and how research is conducted? Can what is presented by the media affect how the general populace views a particular research field? What might the long-term impacts of such a depiction be? These are just a few questions that you will reflect upon in this Assignment.
you will complete a reflective essay to address the following questions:

  1. When you hear the word “scientist” what do you envision?
    1. Discuss at least three characteristics of your vision of a scientist.
    2. Which famous people or characters from the media come into your mind?
    3. What characteristics do they have in common?

  3. Are fictional scientists usually the heroes, villains, or a combination of the two? Provide at least two detailed examples to support your position.
  4. How is science portrayed in fictional media (i.e., television shows, movies, music, books, etc.)? Is it seen as a positive, negative, or neutral force in the world? Give specific examples supporting your position.
  5. Do you think the portrayal of scientists in the various forms of media influences how society views people in this profession? Why, or why not?
  6. Can the portrayal of science in media influence how certain research and technology is viewed and accepted by the general public (e.g., cloning)?

Real Estate Appraisal

The requirement of this assignment is to determine an Estimated Home Value and write a short paper on the topic of Estimated Home Value. Use the data below to determine the correct estimate for the subject property. Also, refer to Chapter 10 for hints and types of adjustments to make.
Solve the following problem using the data outlined. Include a table of any adjustments you make to the sales prices of the comparable properties. Next, write a 3 page paper concerning Estimating Home Value. Include your calculations, chart, etc. in your paper. Discuss vital aspects when estimating the value of a property.
Problem: An appraiser is attempting to estimate the value of a house. The subject property has four bedrooms and a swimming pool. The appraiser has found three comparables that have recently sold:
Comparable Sales Price Bedrooms Swimming Pool
___________________________________________________
1 $110,000                       5                No
2 $101,000                       4                No
3 $104,000                       3                Yes
The appraiser estimates that each bedroom has a worth of $10,000 and a swimming pool a worth of $15,000. Given the above information, what is the estimated value of the subject property using the average derived from the comparables?

Theology and Religion

Pick a religion, preferably not your own.  Then write two paragraphs.  For the first paragraph, suppose you are studying that religion as a religious studies major.  What would you ask about it? For the second paragraph, suppose you are a theologian defending that religion. What would you say about it?  The goal of this assignment is to show that you know the difference between a religious studies major and a theologian.
Limit your answer to one or two sentences for each question.  Here is an example.  Suppose you are looking at Islam.  In the first paragraph, religious studies student might ask what the meaning of the Ramadan fast is to Moslems.  In the second paragraph, a Moslem theologian might argue why keep the Ramadan fast.
Your answer should be between 150 and 300 words. Assignment must be typed in MS Word, where you can check grammar and spelling. After completing your assignment in Word, save the document, then click on “Add a File” button to attach the file and submit your assignment. Keep in mind that only one file is allowed per submission, and only one submission is allowed.

Experimental Design Methodology

Following the extensive literature review, the researcher must decide how he or she will address the questions being asked. This is done by formulating an experimental design that will allow for the objective testing of the hypotheses. Assume again that you want to test the interaction between farming and water quality. Based on background research and an extensive literature review, you have come up with the following hypothesis: If a lake is located directly adjacent to an agricultural field, then it will have higher levels of phosphorous in the water than lakes located more than 500 meters from an agricultural site.
Begin this assignment by reading the “How Do I Write the…Methods” as listed in your required readings. Then, read the scientific journal article from Macreadie, Hughes, and Kimbro (2013) paying particular attention to how the methods section is written.
Now you are to design an experiment to test the hypothesis. In one page or less, list your proposed study site, independent variable(s), dependent variable(s), experimental group, control group, and number of replicates. Then, write a two- to -four page methods section for your proposed design. You should use the knowledge learned through this week’s readings to formulate an accurate and concise experimental design. As explained in your readings, the methods should provide enough detail so that other scientists could repeat your work and verify your findings. Pretend that you have already completed the study and utilize the past tense throughout the section. Reading through the methods sections of the paper by Macreadie, Hughes, and Kimbro (2013) should provide you with a strong example of how a methods section should be written.
